Blade Director Reveals What It's Really Like Working With Marvel Studios: "Your Name Might Not Matter"

Marvel Studios' Blade was once set to be directed by Bassam Tariq, and the filmmaker has now revealed what it's really like working with Marvel Studios and how much directors actually matter.

It's no secret that Marvel Studios has the final say on its movies. Who could forget potential Black Widow director Lucrecia Martel's revelation that executives told her, "Don't worry about the action scenes; we will take care of that"?

Ultimately, Kevin Feige decides what we see on screen, and given that the MCU is a $35 billion franchise, it's hard to argue with the executive's approach. Still, for true auteurs, Marvel Studios may not be the best fit.

Blade is a rare failure for Feige. He had Oscar winner Mahershala Ali ready and willing to play the Daywalker, but couldn't agree on a vision for the R-rated horror movie despite going through multiple scripts and directors. Bassam Tariq was attached for upwards of a year, and was the filmmaker who came closest to bringing Blade back to theaters.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tariq offered some insights into working with Marvel Studios while promoting his new collaboration with Ali, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.

"It’s so funny, in the Marvel world...they say this to you very kindly, they’re like, 'Look, this is a Marvel film directed by a person,'" Tariq revealed. "They crop into shots, they do a lot of things, and that’s fine, right?" Ali then chimed in to say, "Your name might not matter [Laughs]."

Tariq isn't bitter, though, as he hailed Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton as "phenomenal" and said what Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler "has done is really incredible in their universe."

Crediting Feige for getting him to "think big and be ambitious," the filmmaker added that it's "what we did with whatever we were handed. We tried our best to give the best that we can and also respect audiences because I think that’s something that [Marvel] really thinks a lot about."

After attending premieres for MCU movies, Tariq saw how people "were connecting and seeing themselves in these characters," and came away feeling like, "'Oh, wow. This is really special. This isn’t just something to roll your eyes at.'"

While it initially seemed as if Ali might be trying to throw fans off the scent about Blade (rumour has it he'll show up as the anti-hero in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars), his repeated digs at the studio's inability to make the movie suggest he really is done with the project. That's a shame, and it leaves Blade's future in an uncertain place.

Which is true because the MCU is just a very expensive TV Show and Kevin Feige is the showrunner. Like most tv shows you don't really know the director of each episode nor is the showrunner really going to emphasize its directors. But thats part of the job.

It is a blessing the Blade movie never materialized when it did.

@TheFinestSmack - agreed. It needs to come in at a point during MCU where it has a strong narrative surrounding it and propelling it to the future. Such as the start or middle of midnight sons after secret wars rewrites everything. Throwing it into the middle of the multiverse saga would have just ended up in it getting lost.

I feel like Feige had his arm bent behind him. Marshala asked to be blade. Feige can't say no. And he also can't tell him "well can you wait until 2029 when it's marratively fits? "
They shoehorned his voice into Eternals as a thread connecting black knight to the horror mystic world. But it was too premature to tell those storylines

Interesting…

It’s so weird to hear the differing experiences that people have had with Marvel where some feel that the studio does the work for them and they aren’t allowed or given the opportunity to bring some of themselves to a film but then you have people like Coogler & Cretton amongst others who enjoy the more collaborative nature of Marvel rather then them just letting the director take hold of the ship like some may like which is fascinating.

Good to see Tariq still give Feige props though since the guy might be the head of this huge franchise but like everyone else in the cast & crew is trying to make the best film & tv show they can which may work out sometimes but not others because no one sets out to make something bad imo!!.

It's a good thing we never got the Blade movie. It was extremely clear it was never going to be about Blade, it was always going to be warped to meet the insanity of those working on it, primarily thinking a black character needed to be used as a commentary on race and politics.

From the pieces of scripts we do have some of the most notable include:

• A period piece involving Blade as part of the Civil Rights movements.
• A father-daughter bonding movie with the daughter as the main character with Blade being lectured and learning lessons about how to be a non-toxic male character.
• A female-led movie with Blade in the fourth leading role.
