Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Breaks Silence On Wonder Man, Blade Cancelations: "The Optics Are Obvious"

Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has opened up about the show's shocking cancellation, saying the "optics" of that and Blade being scrapped in quick succession are "obvious."

Marvel Studios built hype for Avengers: Doomsday, VisionQuest, and X-Men at D23, but many fans remain upset about the cancellation of Wonder Man. The news broke at the end of last month and was quickly followed by comments from Mahershala Ali about why he's finally walked away from Blade.

That's two projects led by Black characters scrapped in quick succession. Making matters worse in Wonder Man's case is the fact that the plug was pulled on the series after it was officially renewed for Season 2.

It appears low viewership on Disney+ was the reason Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery's stories reached an abrupt end, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has now made his feelings on the matter clear.

Talking to Vanity Fair, the actor appeared understandably happy with how things played out and touched on the broader issues that come with Wonder Man and Blade being shelved by Disney. "I think the optics are obvious," he stated. "If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics."

"So it should be a priority to change that narrative and to do what it takes to responsibly change that narrative with quality stories, with quality resources."

"I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers," Abdul-Mateen said of the decision not to move forward with Wonder Man Season 2. "I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, for whatever reason it was, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business, and that’s the decision that we live with and we keep on marching forward."

"I felt that our show did have quality story, did have quality resources, did have quality actors and people, and did produce quality results that the viewers responded to positively, that the voters responded to positively. So our show does deserve some study and some real, hard information about why a show like this did not continue forward, because it had all of the ingredients that one would want in a show."

Work on Season 2 had begun when the axe fell, but no specific story details have been revealed. For the Aquaman and Watchmen star, exploring what became of Simon when he'd finally achieved his dreams as an actor was key.

"Well, what are you going to do when you finally get it? What do you do when you finally get everything that you’ve always wanted?" he mused. "And for a guy like Simon to get fame, notoriety, and a little bit of power, he has a big heart, but he also has an ego. He also wants to be a star."

While it's been said that Wonder Man could return elsewhere in the MCU, Abdul-Mateen doesn't sound so sure. Dancing around a possible MCU return, he said, "I understand that that’s the nature of this business—there’s highs and lows. Business and life move on."

The actor has received an Emmy nomination for his performance, but Wonder Man itself didn't receive any nods, despite glowing reviews. Streaming platforms rarely disclose viewership numbers, so we'll likely never know how the series really fared on Disney+.

"Yahya Abdul-Mateen II steals the show in this delightfully original two-hander about friendship, acting, and being true to yourself," we wrote in our review"Wonder Man is the cure to superhero fatigue and the most original MCU TV series since WandaVision."

Wonder Man is now streaming on Disney+.

I liked Wonder Man but who cares about optics? They tried to do Blade and couldnt get it done and WM didnt have the viewership to justify continuing. Oh so because their black they have to get made? Marvel just did the biggest dei shows Ironheart and Echo who nobody wanted or watched, they made wonderman black by race swapping him and made Cap black and that movie flopped.

Give me a break.

@Chris827 - I don't think he's actually saying that. I think he's acknowledging that that's how some will look at it and bring some backlash on Disney in these politically charged times.

I don't know that I agree with that assessment, because, as you said. Disney comes under fire all the time for just the opposite. Not that I totally. agree with that assessment either.

It's hard being Black in a Business thats all owned by old white men. They control everything & our optics/reality but love to use & pillaged black culture. This view isn't woke or political...it's just reality. Everything has it cycle/time then its over. There will come a time when the rabbit gets the gun though...

@ClarkJoeKent - Right. So they race swap another white character so there is representation but its old white men that are the problem.

Who stopped everyone else from watching the show? I mean, you guys make no sense at all. The same studio gave Black Panther top shelf treatment all the way. Not only was the creator black but every member of the cast and crew practically. The movie is getting another sequel.

Blade wasn't made because it was a bait and switch. It was going to be about his daughter and the actor, who is black, was not on board. Its a good thing too because it would have been shit.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - Right. So they race swap another white character so there is representation but its old white men that are the problem.....lets not be COY! You know exactly what Im referring to. Im going to spell this out plainly so theres no room for error. This business is OWNED by OLD WHITE MEN since the early 1900s. If you want me to believe that since BACK THEN they wanted anyone of equality with BLACK MEN youre trying to bull shit me. So a 100 years later these same companies INCLUDING Hollywood is trying to be...lets say equal is a joke. The reasons why Tyler Perry & Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby etc had to create their own network etc because in todays world white ppl took black ppls word woke & made it political NOW its a DEI when they're seen working under white folks. PLAIN & SIMPLE. Bad Shows are bad shows regardless of the race. When a white male does a show or film that doesn't work we just look past it with no label.........

If a Black person has a job or a position its DEI? What do you call white ppl playing the roles of Egyptians, Moses, Abraham..etc who was clearly BLACK PPL😂 A film or show not doing well isn't because of their race. Black Panther, Sinnwers surely didn't need any white help to be BLOCKBUSTERS & successful. Fat White Men are coping in their moms house.

Between Watchmen & Wonder Man, this dude has given two of the great comic book performances of the last decade. This was a really great season of TV, the best one of the D+ Marvel era for sure. Hopefully Yahya continues getting great roles, excited to see what him and Fincher cooked up for Cliff Booth.

@thedrudo - Yeah, heard something about him wanting a delay to 2027 and extensive reshoots but Netflix only gave him a couple of days. Although he infamously hates how most of his films turn out during editing and they wind up mostly great in the end

I mean, they gave black cap his own movie and it didn't really work out, Same with Shang Chi, so i'm not sure it's true that they're not trying to change these optics.

Disney has been all about going woke in the last 10 years, they're finally making decision based on business and from the lessons learned with that woke attack (and also post pandemic changes).

I'm not in the industry, but this is an educated assumsption based on their trends. i say this as a black man too.

The mutant saga will give them the chance to get things right and still tick all the boxes. The X-men/mutants and all their storied history with all the lore can do it for them without forcing it. So much to mine there.

Viewing numbers never matter for anyone involved when something gets canned.

If something isn’t generating income, it’s not going to last.

I am curious however what this thing ultimately costs because it was so stripped down. It’s a bummer this didn’t get another season because I quite enjoyed it.

Yep , them cancelling Wonder Man and scrapping the likes of Blade and seemingly Armor Wars aswell is just not a good look…

I appreciate and acknowledge Yahya’s level headed response to this but for a show that got as much acclaim as it did to be just cancelled after it was renewed (I guess the viewership wasn’t that low then huh?) and then not be given a straight answer for that is dirty from Disney/Marvel.

I hope we do see Simon & Trevor again in the future but I wouldn’t blame Yahya if he decided he didn’t want back after this BS even though I would like to see how Simon dealt with his newfound fame etc!!.

Guess what. FF, Thunderbolts, and Mando & Grogu all underperformed without "optics".

MCU is going through a tough time, so they're circling the wagons and limiting their focus.

Also, I gave Wonder Man a try, and it had low numbers for reasons other than "optics".

"That's two projects led by Black characters scrapped in quick succession."

Always gotta go there. It doesn't matter if you're white, black, Hispanic, Itallion, Russian, Slavic, Asian, Indian, ....anything. if the ratings don't hit, your stuff will be canceled. If a company feels there's too many streaming shows, your show will get canceled.

It's not because you are a person of color. Get TF over your pity party.

The WNBA is only alive because the "narrative" people want women and African Americans to be the main thing. Who cares if their product sucks and their league has lost money for 29 straight years. The men's nba keeps bailing them out.

This stupid woke sh1t is getting old. If you're not good enough with the job you do, expect getting the ax.... even of you're considered a "minority."

He's not wrong, it IS bad optics.
Wonder Man was fantastic and his character will hopefully show up in other films / series down the line. I also still have faith Blade will eventually happen, probably not with Mahershala though.
