Wonder Man: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II On MCU's Track-Record With Black-Led Projects; Viewership Data Revealed

Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has shared his thoughts on Marvel Studios' apparent struggles with Black-led projects, while new viewership data may explain why Season 2 was scrapped.

Wonder Man's cancellation shocked fans, especially after the Disney+ series was renewed for Season 2. While the show works as a standalone story, that first batch of episodes left everyone wanting more of Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery.

With 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, Wonder Man ranks among the best-reviewed MCU titles, but arguably suffered from receiving the "Marvel Spotlight" treatment. Like Echo, the entire season was released on the same day, meaning it was discussed for a week and then quickly forgotten.

Talking on the latest edition of The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider said he's been told that Wonder Man was "by far" Marvel's least-viewed live-action TV series.

Unofficial viewership data from Luminate seems to contradict that claim, as the site explains, "The show ranked as the second most watched Disney+ original TV season by both minutes streamed and estimated season views in the U.S. in the first half of 2026. In both cases, it came in behind a fellow Marvel series: Daredevil: Born Again for minutes and The Punisher: One Last Kill for views."

That may sound positive, but upon closer inspection, the numbers aren't quite so good. While Wonder Man had a relatively low budget compared to other MCU TV shows, the site's data "shows a 48% drop-off in views from premiere to finale over its first 12 weeks."

That means only 52% of viewers who started the series made it to the finale, and "a Luminate analysis of streaming original slates found new Disney+ series typically need a retention rate of 53% or higher to be considered safe from cancellation." It wasn't a traditional superhero series, so perhaps some people were turned off by the lack of costumed action expected from the MCU?

Whatever the case, Wonder Man didn't draw enough interest. It was a wildly different series from Marvel Studios, but after so many only-okay or disappointing Disney+ series, even that may not have been enough to convince people to give it a shot. There's also the small matter of people not knowing who Wonder Man is.

In an interview with NPR, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was asked about Marvel Studios' Black-led projects, which, outside of the Black Panther franchise, have either failed or fallen by the wayside. Ironheart and Captain America: Brave New World fall into the former category, with Blade and Wonder Man in the latter.

The Watchmen star also commented on why he believes Wonder Man needed a little more time to find an audience and confirmed that he's open to playing Simon again.

"I make the observation based off my experience. When you look at the history of those projects and when you put them all together, there's no way around it, it does not look good. It does not look like good business, and it looks like it's certainly not favorable to its Black creatives. That's what it looks like. So I'd be ignorant if I didn't - or I'd be, you know, willfully blind if I chose not to make that observation. I'm always interested in the truth, and I'm always interested in what is true for me. And what is true for me is that in the case of 'Wonder Man,' I actually don't know what happened."

"I've heard things about viewership. What I would say is that if that is the case, then when it comes to Black-led projects, especially Black-led niche projects, I think they need a little bit more time to cook because I think Black audiences usually find out and gravitate to the niche projects a little bit slower. They're a little bit behind because they're not always - that's not what's always marketed to us. And I think that it was one of those projects that needed a bit more time to cook if it was going to depend on the Black audience to also give some buoyancy, you know, to the numbers of that show."

"Nevertheless, I will circle back and - you know, and always come back to the point that I'm so thankful and, you know, blessed to have been able to be a part of something that was special, that is special. I'm getting so much love out there. And the reason why I think I'm getting so much love is because people are - yes, they do feel for me, but what's actually going on is that they loved that show. You know, people really enjoyed that show."

"And I know what it's like to have one of my favorite shows be canceled or for it to finally end. You got to find a way to fill that slot, to fill that void. So I think it's a sign that, you know, our show gave a lot of people a lot of, you know, joy and relief and some distraction, you know, in this world. And I do hope that I get another chance to step back into that Wonder Man character."

It was a mistake to cast him honestly people barely care about WonderMan and you go ahead and change his appearance the character’s biggest selling point. Only watched episode 1 and didn’t really care for it

@Gambito - Why give any of 'em jobs, amiright?
Seriously though, how is Wonder Man's appearance his selling point? He has a bad costume. I would think it'd be his history with the West Coast Avengers or his unique job, being an actor superhero, which is what they based the show on.

@Gambito - yeah this is the take unfortunately.

if glen Powell was in the same show, it would have more viewers and he would be in doomsday

The series sucked. It would have sucked even with a white lead.

This was definitely one of those where if you're a manbaby who wants to watch superheroes fly around and punch each other you're not going to like. Much like Wandavision though, it's not an action show. Part of the beauty of the MCU is how they tell stories in different genres that just happen to have superheroes.

Wonder Man was a good series and I was frankly surprised I felt so. I think it had one more season in it that would bring him around to being a “superhero,” embracing that role, and being approached by the Avengers as the close out.

@Astroman - I concur.

Wonder man was great, refreshing, grounded, a deconstruction of an otherwise white superhero but Yaya’s chemistry with Kingsley was sound. I don’t think it necessarily needed a second season because the story reached its finite conclusion. It would be great to see Yaya return as WM in future projects. Personally I don’t think audiences rejected it the show due to race swapping I think it was rejected because it lacked the usual action and spectacle that superhero media provides. People wanna be entertained but WM was far more “arthouse” than blockbuster and I think a lot of people were bored watching a metahuman trying to break into acting instead of fighting aliens or wizards or androids with his new found abilities.

The people yelling out racism racism are not being honest. They’re not sitting back and thinking about it. Or maybe you haven’t don’t care. Let’s sit back and think about it. White character. Black actor! Racism? No. Does Marvel get any thanks or praise? No. This is what is expected now. Great reviews! Terrible ratings. At this point, not even D people yelling out racism are watching it. So who do you keep the lights on for? For them. And for Abdul‘s paycheck. You keep it on for people not watching, and for a guy and not making you money. So, they don’t keep the lights on. They shut it down. And now they are racist. It really is so dishonest.
