The People v. Gorilla Grodd Comedy TV Series Announced By DC Studios; Story Details, Full Cast Revealed

HBO Max has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order to a new half-hour comedy, The People v. Gorilla Grodd (f.k.a. DC Crime), from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television.

The Max Original comedy stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, and Superman actors Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

The series also stars Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz. Their respective roles have not been revealed. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Yacenda set to direct all episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran also serve as executive producers.

According to the first officially released plot details for The People v. Gorilla Grodd, the series follows a superintelligent ape who is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part "true" crime docuseries, the Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials.

James Gunn and Peter Safran, executive producers and DC Studios' co-CEOs, said, "Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of 'Superman' that this would be a fun world to explore."

"We're excited to work with the brilliant Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries," they concluded.

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, showrunners, writers, and executive producers, added, "We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artefact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis."

"We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime," they continued. "And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series."

Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series, noted, "We are thrilled to be working with Tony and Dan, alongside James, Peter, the entire DC team and our colleagues at WBTV, to bring these iconic DCU characters to HBO Max in a new and unexpected way."

"We already know Skyler Gisondo is pitch-perfect as Jimmy Olsen, and we can’t wait for fans to experience Jimmy Tatro’s captivating and hilarious portrayal of Grodd."

An in-universe press release has also been revealed, shedding additional light on how the mockumentary will play out and Grodd's alleged crime of killing his father and consuming his brain. So far, there has been nothing to suggest the DCU's Flash—Grodd's greatest enemy in the comics—will appear.

Are you excited to check out The People v. Gorilla Grodd when it arrives on HBO Max? A 2028 launch currently seems likely.

In 2028, I will write an editorial about why DC Studios failed, and this series will be a prime example.

Gunn is just burning WB's money on purposes, that is the only reasonably logical explanation for all these stupid ass creative decisions.

@soberchimera - If Feige takes him back, Gunn was an MCU agent the whole time.
If Feige doesn't, then Gunn is a Snyder cultist who intentionally derailed WB's reboot so that they'd have no choice but to bring Zack back.

Everyone on here bitched about Lanterns and it wound up getting great reviews and crazy viewership numbers. This has a genuinely great creative team. Biggest issue w/ Gunn rn is he’s great at getting creative teams for TV but handed the Wonder Woman and DCU Batman movies to absolute hacks.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 8/21/2026, 2:55 PM
@tmp3 - All that still pales to the fact that they're wasting the character of Hal Jordan and all of his history, no amount of glazing and praise will ever change that.

What is going on with everyone?? This sound absolutely great in a ridiculous way.
Mainly I’m glad that Gorilla Grodd is getting some love but I’m so glad they’re still playing with genres like Lanterns, much rather have a creative and fun show than hero fights villain see also: Lanterns, Wandavision, Wonderman

@Gambito -

It’s no less off the wall than wandavision or a Loki spinoff and those were the best MCU shows.

Watch it introduce us to the new flash at the end!

Good, smart plan as you're launching the DCU. Start by making a joke out of it.

Nice , I like the title & the premise honestly since true crime documentaries are in right now so doing a mock version of that could be fun and is certainly unique…

I enjoyed Skyler’s Jimmy Olsen for the most part in Superman so I would be down to to see him again in the role aswell as the rest of the cast (still a bit reserved about Jimmy Tatro as Grodd if he’s meant to be a serious antagonist in the DCU’s future but seems like could work within the context of this series since he seems young).

I’m surprised they are going the consuming brains angle from the comics at one point but feels like it fits Gunn’s DCU and I hope this is almost a Primal Fear ending where perhaps Grodd is given the not guilty verdict but we find out he did kill his father in a darkly funny way.

This sounds kinda cool but Gunn is gambling on this. It's not 2013 anymore. The goodwill for comicbook material is gone. It's time to embrace B and A list characters. This feels too risky even though I like the creativity.

I rather Gunn focus on mainstream characters and add the creativity.

Man I was trying to hold hope for Gunn as I really liked Superman, but who the [frick] asked for this? I have yet to check Lanterns out yet, but man it's like he's writing a "how to destroy a billion dollar IP" book. forward by Disney (Star Wars)

@JabbaTheSus - he has a plan, he’s introducing certain characters for future movies down the line. As well, giving those side characters projects because they won’t be seen in the great dcu movies or won’t be seen much.

Grodd was hinted in Creature commandos.

@NinnesMBC - you could kinda say that about almost anything…

Obviously we need to see the show to judge its quality but right now , I think it seems like a fun idea that could be a good and interesting way to world build further.

I get that you haven’t particularly liked Gunn’s approach but you are also one of the most positive and open minded people on this site so I hope that remains.

@TheVisionary25 - No, not with almost anything. Generalizing isn't gonna cut it this time, at least not with a still nascent cinematic universe in it's 2nd year.

Best I can do in terms of giving this the benefit of doubt is watch American Vandal to get an idea of what are they planning to do here. I probably would be less critical of it if the villain they're investigating was someone really obscure and not so dangerous, not a Flash villain that has shown more than once to be a serious threat. I'm more concerned about what they'll do to Grodd than the Daily Planet staff.

Oh I am, I am always gonna be it even when I was exactly that in the past with projects I liked and was hyped about ended up being pretty much talked down and mocked over many times. The thing is now that we're supposedly getting the real deal of DC content that we always should've had to begin with, these things are greenlit over many other important IPs that obviously take relevancy. So it makes someone go "really? We got all of the cool things axed to have this instead?" at some point and I'm pretty much in that area.

I'll cautiously wait. But even that has limits.
