DC Comics has announced that Tom King and Daniel Sampere's Wonder Woman run will end with issue #40 this December. The acclaimed run, which has introduced Trinity and the Sovereign to the DC Universe, has redefined Diana as an outlaw, a rebel, a mother, a revolutionary, a warrior, and a legend.
The Matriarch and her father, the Sovereign, have gathered a group of violent villains to destroy Wonder Woman and all that she represents. Can Diana and her family stand strong and protect the shores of Themyscira from the ultimate threat?
Wonder Woman #40 brings the monumental conclusion of the "Wonder War" and this historic run by the Eisner Award-winning writer, who has spent recent years developing and writing Lanterns and Mister Terrific for DC Studios.
It turns out that played a role in why his Wonder Woman run is ending sooner than he planned. Talking to AIPT, King explained, "I have various images in my head of what it could be, but there has been some stuff that has organically evolved, things that we’ve changed because the audience responded to them, that are more emphasised from issue #1."
"But I think the thematic through-line from issue #1 to the end is there. I mean, I wanted to, when I first started, do 100 issues, so I’m disappointed in myself for not getting that," King continued, confirming that his increasingly busy DCU schedule ultimately made that impossible. Still, he remains "incredibly happy and joyous" with how his Wonder Woman run will end.
One of the comic's biggest additions to the DC Universe has been Diana Prince's daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Prince, a.k.a. Trinity. King noted, "I found the personality I was looking for. At first I made her very, very brash and very, very arrogant, and I didn’t explain where that came from and the messiness of that character."
He continued, "It wasn’t until I started writing the younger versions of her and the precociousness of her that I was like, 'Oh, now I found that.' Hopefully by the end of this series we can deliver the best version of Trinity to the audience going forward."
Sampere also commented on Wonder Woman's conclusion, telling the site, "My hopes always have been to do a great run for Wonder Woman, and that people who read the run, if it’s now or in the future, feel that it’s reading a relevant point on the character’s history, like when you pick other important runs for her."
"I hope people see that we gave everything also on the series, that we gave our absolute best and we did it with all our love and passion. I hope they can feel it when reading the series."
Wonder Woman #40, written by Tom King with art and main cover by Daniel Sampere, will feature variant covers by David Nakayama, Julian Totino Tedesco, and Jamie Hewlett. The grand finale arrives in comic book stores on December 16, 2026.
