"I Have Guys I Like": James Gunn Shares Big Batman Casting Update And THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD Script Progress

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has shared an update on where things stand with casting the DCU's Batman, weighing in on the Brandon Sklenar speculation. He also teases The Brave and the Bold's script...

At this point, it's not exactly a secret that DC Studios is struggling to figure out Batman. Rebooting Superman was pretty easy in the wake of Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill's moody interpretation. Still, a fresh take on the Dark Knight after what we've seen from Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson is no easy feat.

The Brave and the Bold was announced as part of the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate at the start of 2023. As of now, the movie does have a writer (whose identity isn't known) and a director in The Flash's Andy Muschietti. Well, maybe. One thing we do know is that Batman hasn't been cast.

As fans wait for updates, they continue sharing casting suggestions on social media. Names like Alan Ritchson and Jensen Ackles frequently pop up, as does 1923 and The Housemaid star Brandon Sklenar.

Asked by The Ringer-Verse whether the mention of that show on a recent edition of the Peacemaker podcast was a deliberate nod to Sklenar, Gunn replied, "Do I have ideas about actors who could play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are top of the list for me, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman."

"People can guess and maybe they'll be right about certain things. We'd have to screen test, we'd have to do the whole thing," he said of casting the DCU's Bruce Wayne before adding, "Okay, I see what you're doing. '1923', it's a really good TV show, like I can't believe how good that show was."

He later noted, "One actor in particular, a pretty big star, wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I don’t think that’s the case," likely a reference to Ritchson, who recently took himself out of the running after saying he'd met with Gunn.

While The Batman Part II appears to be the current priority for DC Studios, the Man of Tomorrow director did share a positive update on where things stand with The Brave and the Bold's script.

"The script isn't done," Gunn confirmed. "I mean, we've got somebody writing a script, I think it's really good."

While the filmmaker has been incredibly busy with Creature CommandosSuperman, and Peacemaker season 2, being three years into the DCU without The Brave and the Bold having a finished script has frustrated many fans.

When the movie was announced, the intention was to adapt Grant Morrison's Batman run, where Bruce Wayne learns that he has a son, Damian, whom he attempts to train as his new Robin.

I don't think we're getting any solo Batman movies in the DCU until Reeves finishes his trilogy, so they're probably not in the biggest hurry to cast him.

@TheJok3r - never happen with Spider-Man which sucks Spider-Man and his amazing avenger team up

@Matchesz - It'd probably spell doom for both versions. Like what happened with DC. If it's not focused people stop caring.

I'd vote for whomever the analogue for a young Russell Crowe is. Maybe Cosmo Jarvis? Somebody grizzly to balance out Corenswet.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Cosmo Jarvis would be a great Batman, and I hadn't considered that. He has a great voice for it.

@BestAtWhatIDo - Looks a little too rough to also be a playboy, trust fund baby Bruce Wayne. I suppose it depends which way they go with the Bruce Wayne Persona. There has to be a good balance of gruff but also handsome playboy.

@BestAtWhatIDo - true! The only thing is that you want a dude who doesn't seem like he would be fighting crime. A semi-pretty boy handsome dude. This guy looks like a scrapper.

It's a lose lose situation. If people generally like Reeve's/Pattinson Batman better, then the new DCU one will be mocked as silly and probably compared to Clooney Batman, even if it's unfairly. If they like Gunn's better, then Battinson will be a footnote, the George Lazenby, or Brandon Routh of Batmen. The only slightly better option is to combine them, which is also problematic.

McMurdo - 9/20/2025, 11:17 AM
@FleischerSupes - the Reeves one is mocked already. He listens to Nirvana in the bat cave and journals whilst yelling at Alfred, wears loud boots because stealth be damned and he can barely take on a handful of kids at a bus stop.

FleischerSupes - 9/20/2025, 11:23 AM
@McMurdo - In which case, they should cancel the sequel right away.
LibraMatter
LibraMatter - 9/20/2025, 5:02 PM
@McMurdo - all possibly due to Bruce being somewhat young and somewhat dumb when we meet him. Isn’t it year two or something like that? We don’t start off the men we are going to be, there’s a journey to it and if he has to yell at Alfred alittle to get there then so be it! Haha. Sometimes Alfred can be a little too intrusive. Even Bale’s Batman had to check him a few times.

ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 9/20/2025, 7:22 PM
@McMurdo - Only on the same level that everything is mocked. Like how Corenswet's Supes was mocked for shouting all the time for example.

LibraMatter

@WalletsClosed - Different personality approaches and all together different journeys. Battison literally seemed to learn how to fight by Alfred and just created tech on his own… maybe with Alfred, also no Ra’s Al Ghul league of shadows journey. Battison seemed way greener.

That's a positive script update, not yet finished but seems to be in a good place. Wouldn't be surprised if it's done by the end of the year, hopefully then Gunn will finally reveal the writer and how long they've actually been working on it.

If I have to guess who would be the most likely (in terms of acting, physicality and just generally how big a name they are) to play DCU Batman; I think it would either be Will Poulter or Bill Skarsgård:

Will Poulter:

- Great Actor
- Looks the part
- Has worked with Gunn before
- 32 yrs old
- 6'3'
- Is already in superhero shape

Bill Skarsgård:

- Also a great actor
- Also looks the part
- Has already worked with Andy Muschietti (if that's still happening)
- 35 yrs old
- 6'4'
- Is also already in superhero shape
- Also has played a vampire (which I imagine is not unhelpful when playing Batman lol)

I prefer Alan ritchson but those are solid choices.

Yeah, these dudes be using the word “great” way too loosely. LOL Daniel Day-Lewis is a great actor. Washington, Bale, etc. How the [frick] Will Poulter became a “great actor” 🤣
Superspecialawesomeguy
Superspecialawesomeguy - 9/20/2025, 6:53 PM
@HulkisHoly - Ritchson has the physicality for sure but his acting range is limited imo, plus he's close to being in his mid-40's so I think hes aged out of the role by now.
WalletsClosed
WalletsClosed - 9/20/2025, 6:59 PM
@TheNewYorkerr - To be fair, I think there's a world of difference between some of the best actors of all time and a great actor. Calling DDD, Washington, and Bale "Great" actors does them a major disservice.
Superspecialawesomeguy
Superspecialawesomeguy - 9/20/2025, 7:23 PM
@TheNewYorkerr - Tbf I would put Daniel Day-Lewis in the "amazing" actor category myself lol, but that aside if you had seen Will Poulter's performances in non-mainstream movies like Detroit, Bainne and most recently in Warfare you would see why he's one of the best actors working today imo.

Perhaps. But I do feel like age matters less when you have guys like Rick Flag Sr running around.

I guess these people have forgotten that Gunn said he’s not interested in a campy & funny Batman but they gotta push their narratives and dislike of the guy so oh well.

I wonder who this pretty big star was that wants to be Batman but Gunn doesn’t think it will happen?.

It might be Ritchson but idk if I would call him that then , some think it’s Jake Gyllenhaal which it could be but idk.

Anyway , my pick is still Brandon Sklenar but I do think it’s likely that it could be someone like Tom Britney who was the runner up for Superman alongside Hoult & Corenswet.
