James Gunn On The Decade-Long Plan For The DCU And Changes Since The GODS AND MONSTERS Slate Announcement

Several TV shows and films revealed during the initial announcement of the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate have yet to move forward or materialize.

DC Studios co-Chair James Gunn sat down for a wide-ranging interview with YMH Studios to discuss several key topics, including how long the initial DCU film and television slate was mapped out, and how and why the release order has since changed.

The slate was initially announced back on January 31, 2023 and nearly three years later, there's been little to no update on several of the projects that elicited a ton of excitement from DC fans.

On that date, 5 TV shows and 5 films were announced and development on The Authority, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, and Waller has been virtually nonexistent.

Speaking to YMH Studios, Gunn touched on this fact.

"When we first took over, I had written up what the first shows were supposed to be and then where the story eventually went. So we met with David Szaslav, who was the one that hired us, and we told him what the basic plan was," Gunn told the podcast.

"He was into that and we got hired. He was the only one that knew the plan but then we told Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdi and they were into it, and we also told Casey Bloys- who's the head of HBO."

"So we had a basic plan and then we hired a bunch of writers who I really respected, who came in and we kind of worked out the whole story. Now some things have changed since then for various reasons but the basic thrust of the big story is the same- that is, what started in Superman, continues in Peacemaker season 2 and then continues in the next Superman movie, and then will continue in the movie after that, and then after that. So there was always this bigger plan that we came up with."

"It's like a decade, maybe a little less. It's very loose too. You have to be careful because there were certain projects that were part of that plan- because my other rule is that I'm not going to greenlight anything without having a screenplay that I love. And there were other things that haven't worked yet. You have to be able and willing to have the big picture in mind but also be able to shift anytime you need to. So the pinpoints are the same but some of the specifics have changed."

Per Gunn, while the initial release schedule of the first chapter for Gods and Monsters has changed, the broader paint strokes for the overall picture Gunn is trying to paint has remained the same.

Reading between the lines of his carefully constructed comments, it sounds like Superman will be the central thoroughfare of the slate in terms of telling its overall story. It seemed as if Supergirl and Lanterns were intentionally skipped to mention that Man of Tomorrow would be the next big paint stroke put on the DCU's canvas.

Sad. It seeming more and more like Reeves elseworlds story is going to delay or prevent a DCU Batman from being a priority. They don’t want to steal the spotlight from emo Batman, which I get, but it sucks. Bc emo Batman may be liked or even loved by many, but not by everyone.

I for one would much prefer a new DCU Batman get the time and resources being spent on Pattinson.

Lame.

@MuadDib - I hated The Batmeh and I was all for this DCU Batman version, up until I saw Gunn's "Super""man". Like, I was originally up for giving the guy a shot despite my concerns that the guy wasn't right for Superman and after seeing the trailers and the film, he proved my concerns right, I dread what he's gonna do with Batman. Best I can hope for is for some other writer / director to take over and Gunn has litle to nothing to do with it beyond a few cliff notes, like what they did with that Penguin show but I just don't see Gunn backing off from it, not without plastering himself all over it.

@MuadDib - I'm not a fan of the emo bats, but if that universe sticks around solely to give us more stories set in Gotham (mostly on MAX I hope) then it's worth it.

Batman in the new DCU? I can definitely wait. There's been so much batman stuff in the past 20 years that I'm good if they wait on the DCU bats. However, I'd eventually like to see the bat-family expanded on in the DCU once Bats gets going there.

@MuadDib - Pattinson being “emo” was about driving home how far gone he was from reality. He’s checked out as much as possible from anything other than Batman, hence the ending and the realization of his character as something other than “vengeance”.

From a marketing standpoint I don’t think prioritizing a Batman film while building anticipation for an already existing one is a good idea, for both versions. DC comics have an extensive history to pull from, although I hope they can build something fresh and interesting, a DCU version of Batman would do fine being last in the list.

@strctlyresearch - I agree that cannibalizing profits and attention from one movie to another is not smart business. Hence why I suspect the DCU Batman is on the back burner. But considering how long development of such a property would take, his importance to the grander DCU and his pivotal role in the JL, leaving him on the shelf while an elseworlds story plays out seems equally dumb.

It sucks that fans find themselves in this position. That Batman has so much character development to done for the BatFamily only highlights how getting started sooner than later would make more sense, otherwise Gunns 10 year plan will easily turn into a 20 year plan at the rate Reeves is putting out his franchise and the spacing between any potential follow ups to the DCU Bat once he does make his appearance.

Hanging over all of this, we have Paramount and Netflix licking their lips at the prospect of acquiring WB, DC and HBO, which could turn everything on its head.

'SUPERGIRL' and 'LANTERNS' were only 'skipped' because they're already done. Of course he's on to 'MAN OF TOMORROW' that doesn't mean other stuff isn't coming first. Once we get to see a trailer for 'LANTERNS' he'll shift focus back to that to sell it. Once the media blitz for 'SUPERGIRL' starts and we get to see a trailer, it will be ALL about that flick until it's released. He's got a plan people. Let him cook.

Of all of those that there hasn't been movement on yet the only one I seriously care about happening is Booster Gold.
Like many of you, I was introduced to the character from Bruce Timm's JLU Booster episode: The Greatest Story Never Told. My gosh was it funny...and Skeets, who Gunn would be awesome at bringing to life, was hilariously comic-gold!
So, let's get the Booster Gold MAX series going boys! If not for fame, then Mega-Fame!!!

I love the fact that he thinks the DCU will still be around in 10 years....
....and that it won't be rebooted (....again) before then.

So adorbs.

Makes sense imo…

Contrary to popular belief , Marvel Studios didn’t even have a concrete plan until Whedon decided to put Thanos at the end of Avengers and the rest is history so Gunn essentially having outline that still has room for flexibility just in case certain projects or things don’t work out seems like a sound method to me.

None of these big universes can have a solid plan because there’s just too many variables so best to have the gist of it ion terms of its destination and then allow for creatives to help you get there in a way that also gives them a chance to tell the stories they want to tell.

Anyway , I have liked the DCU so far thus I’m interested to see how it develops!!.

I'm just thinking about how much better this all could've been with the like of McQuarrie, brad bird or the F1/top gun guy in charge. They could've brought Gunn in at phase 3 to direct and write a film about some recondite character no one cares about , which he is way, way more suited to

@TheVisionary25 - I thought it was fine, but not great and I wouldn't necessarily be itching to watch it again. Of the superhero films I've seen this year, its my least favorite. And its the weakest superhero film of Gunn's that I've seen to date too. Definitely wasn't wowed or anything.

HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 9/22/2025, 7:56 PM
@epc1122 - I found the lack of great, well-written chemistry between Lois and Clark to be puzzling and super jarring. I know the actors had good chemistry off set, so this was a deliberate choice on the writing/directing side of things. I found Clark's immaturity and general incompetence at times during fights to be a strange approach to give the character. I could understand if it was the first 3 months into him in action, but after 3 years he should know how to carry himself better. I'm not saying I don't want to see Supes struggle; Superman & Lois did an excellent job showing this. But come on.

Just to name a couple of things.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/22/2025, 8:13 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - eh, I really liked the Superman and Lois dynamic in the movie but to each their own. Sorry you didn’t like it as much. I will say, the more I saw the movie, I found the positives outweighed the flaws. I didn’t really find Superman incompetent, just think the previous three years in his Superman career, he didn’t have the same challenges. He probably didn’t face anyone as smart as Luthor and ultraman was equal to Superman’s strength since he was a clone. I think in Superman 25 he was challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally. I do love Superman and Lois’ take though. Such an underrated show that i think a lot of the fandom got behind. It is what it is though. Sorry you only liked the movie a b-.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I definitely think Superman and Lois doesn’t get enough mention around here. Seems like people just make it Superman 25 vs man of steel which I find ridiculous. Superman has been around for so long and is much more than just those two movies.

@epc1122 - people tend to be misinformed, clueless, prejudiced, or all of the above, lol.
epc1122
epc1122 - 9/23/2025, 2:47 AM
@HeavyMetal4Life - yeah, definitely for some. Luckily there are also some on here that don’t have that mentality. For me, I’m fine if someone doesn’t like a particular or same version as me, but there’s no need to ruin it for others. There’s no perfect version, some incarnations just happen to be closer to people’s personal favorites. I’ve loved man of steel forever, but the more I see it, the more faults I find with the movie. Still enjoy it, but it’s not a perfect movie, at least for me. Is Superman and Lois your favorite? Did you ever see Lois and Clark?
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 9/23/2025, 11:38 AM
@epc1122 - yeah, Superman & Lois is my favorite iteration of the characters. One of my favorite Lex's too, that and Jon Cryer's Lex I really like (more than Hoult's, though at no fault of Hoult).
I never saw Lois and Clark, I was really young when that came out.

Best thing Gunn can do in my opinion is make the DCU Batman a side character in the DCU until The Batman 3. Then give us Brave and The Bold. Just maybe cast someone younger so he can age into the roll. The Batman 3 probably won’t be released until 2031.
