"Unchained Expression" Paintings based on CBMs

"Unchained Expression" Paintings based on CBMs

A series of paintings from local Atlanta artist Woody Bowen (me!).

On my art website I have posted a series of paintings inspired by Comic Books and Comic Book Movies. Here's a taste!

Like "Warzone" or hate it... this Iconic piece is undeniable.

I had to do a "Wanted" piece. All though this film fell short of my expectations from the book... It was still great in its own right.

One of the greatest CBMs of all time! I had to paint this great poster!

My city... She screams for me.

In my opinion, "The Losers" was one of the most underrated CBMs to date. Great film!

"Kingdom Come" came out in 1996 and is still one of my all time favorite graphic novels!

Oooooh! Hellboy! Shiny!

Iconic and viscous... this had to be put to canvas!

#5 in my "top 5 CBMs ever" list: The Crow

Spartans! Let's get artsy!

Arguably the best incarnation of Batman ever... Arkham Asylum.

Yes, Two Jokers! Sorry, but one already sold and I needed a replacement!

My all-time favorite villain from the comics: Two Face (done in the style of TDK)

I am a huge Boondock Saints fan and justify putting this piece here due to the recent releases of the Boondock Saint comic books (12 Gauge Comics)

I'm also a fan of comic related show: "The Big Bang Theory" so Sheldon had to make an appearance.

Well I hope you enjoyed the art and don't forget to check out my website for more!

@Nopurpose - No... they are my original paintings.
@ThreeBigTacos - I have done a whole collection of nothing but Boondock paintings on my website. Check em out.
@Xmutant - There are plenty of original paintings on my website... as far as them being traced... NO. I painted Iconic pieces of CBM history.

Here's one of my original works... I was inspired by what Tim Burton SHOULD have done in his piece of crap Wonderland movie.

As an artist myself, I have to agree with XmutantX. I think you're developing a decent style, though. Challenge yourself and come up with your own scenes.

@XmutantX- Wow. Way to be a dick. Is it too hard for you to offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism? Btw, where is your website with your artwork?

Dude bad ass... clearly your a good artist that has a lot of influences.

ThreeBigTacos - 11/9/2010, 10:15 AM
@Woodinator: don't listen to any wrongful criticism, you have talent and that's all that matters. Also, do you do this on an actual physical canvas or on a program on your computer? It may be a stupid question but I'm just curious since I like to do a mix of both for my artwork :)

@ xmutantx

dude, go be a troll somewhere else. you obviously have no idea how painting works if you think those are traced. all you do is talk shit to everyone about everything. go be miserable and die alone you piece of shit.

@ woodinator

unbelievable work man, i want them all!

Guys, thanks for the support!

@ThreeBigTacos - All of these are just Canvas... no Computer involved.

corn@ dude i havnt even written on this site in months bub...dont exactly kno what ur talkin about wit the troll sh!t hahaha....i kno how painting works...thats obviously how i kno those r jus copies of actualy original artwork...not exactly rocket science here pal...besides i didnt say he sucked or that it was even bad...jus wasnt orginal...the alice in wonderland one is dope..and its original..i can respect that...

aybuddy that is pissed at my comment can eat a d!ck..i was jus bein honest...which is what i thought artists wanted...im not like u losers that say anything that anybuddy does on here is f**kin amazing!..god..grow sum balls people lol

I never said I dreamed up the imagery... I gave credit to the original work in all of them (i.e. the V For Vendetta Poster) but that doesn't mean that they are traced. Plenty of artists use source material when painting. If you don't think so then you should talk to Glen Fabry who says he used pictures of Johnny Depp for his World renowned Preacher covers.
XmutantX
XmutantX - 11/9/2010, 11:13 AM
dude..seriously...u didnt use the figgin boonedock saints 2 paint preacher...u used a boonedock saints picture 2 do the exact boonedock saints picture..big diff there pal...ur arguement dosnt make sense...all i said was post sumtin original...its not hard 2 see u jus threw sum paint ova a picture lol....guess that was suppossed 2 be a big secret..sorry i ruined it 4 ya
Woodinator
Woodinator - 11/9/2010, 11:15 AM
But I didn't copy a Boondock Saints PAINTING, I used a live action picture as a reference to make a painting. By your logic all Portrait artists are hacks.

@XmutantX- I didn't say that you weren't being honest about your opinion but there is such a thing called tact. If you want to critique art there's a way to do it without being rude and still getting your views across. I'm honest about everything I post about on CBM, but I actually know how to do it in a civilized manner without resorting to childish insults. Since you haven't been on this site in months, I suggest that you leave once again, do some growing up, learn how to spell and type grammatically correct, and come back when you aren't being a troll. Btw, I have balls, I just happen to like Woodinator's paintings.

I posted it on this site so that those who are like minded could enjoy the comic book inspired art.

I didn't "paint over" anything... all of these are done on canvases... not on the computer.

Good job man, internet commenting will be the downfall of any artist (myself included) if you are to listen to them. Just keep up the good work and ignore the trolls!

"internet commenting will be the downfall of any artist" thats really REALLY dumb...obviously uve neva been 2 deviantart.com..where every REAL artist has a page devoted 2 internet commenting..u see most artists like 2 hear feedback whether it be positive or negative..its what helps an artist grow in2 a better artist....

i really wish u would stop usingthe term "inspired art"..its an exact copy...hell the batman and superman were actually other peoples art...

UR SH!TS ABOUT AS ORIGINAL AS HALF OF ROB LIEFELDS WORK...and thats the f**kin truth!!!!!

(canvas huh lol..ever hear of a projection screen???)

Woodinator- AWESOME work, bud! LOVE your Hellboy :))

And i just gotta say that posting your art publically online makes you an easy target such as i. What's funny is that i've also been accused of tracing my portraits before. Which is hillarious to me since i draw at work, in an open space, at my collective desk, that i share with the rest of my team so i have PLENTY of witnesses to prove otherwise. Just let it drip off you like on the back of a duck and continue on your awesome paiting!!!

Congrats on making main as well!!! You certainly deserve it! In fact, this is a perfect example of what kind of fan fic/features should make it to main. Kudos :)

XmutantX- I do understand what you are saying. But to me, there is a huge difference between tracing and freehanding. I also understand that you don't find any straight portrait work, either painted or sketched, to be original. Which is correct, it is not an "original" form of art since it doesn't require any creativity. But that certainly doesn't take anything away from the artist's talents. And even though you might have meant well, i have to say that reading your comments, it sure does seem like you are shooting him a bag of shit. So i can also understand why he feels attacked by your comments.

Shaman

XmutantX- Seriously, there is no need for any of this. You seem so primed for some reason. Instead of offering him your opinion, you went straight into his face and threw accusations at him. That's actually offensive even if you didn't mean it to be offensive. I'm not attacking you either here. Just telling you how it all looks from someone else's eyes. Sometimes, life stresses us to a point where we don't fully realise the impact of our actions. It happens to the best of us and i don't think you need to choose any other websites to visit instead of this one. Both are nice and there's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy ;)

Awesome stuff. Honestly, a few of the dimensions are a little bit off, but it gives the work a style of its own. I especially like your use of shading. Doomsday, and the Joker taking off his mask are my favorites.

@XmutantX - I have no idea how people are finding so much to criticize in your posts...I personally can't understand a [frick]ing thing that you're saying. So, you know some stuff about painting? Good for you, now go and learn proper spelling and grammar use.

Good stuff Woodinator. I like the one you did of the Spirit. I am writer myself so I know how hard it is to make it as an Artist. I've not managed to sell any of my stories yet but I'm going to keep trying.

@XmutantX, I understand what you are saying. It does look basically like a tracing or just using some image design/photoshop program to barely change it at all.
If there are indeed by hand without tracing then they are impressive, just try maybe a pic of something I can't google in 10 seconds and find a clearer image of.
