BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Is Now 2014's Third Highest Grossing Release

For a time, it appeared as if James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy would be 2014's highest grossing movie in North America, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 knocked it from the top spot in January, and another has now beaten them both to #1. Read on for details...

When 2014 ended, Guardians of the Galaxy was the year's highest grossing movie. However, money earned this year still counts towards their overall haul, and that's why The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 became 2014's #1 movie on January 21st. It's a weird sounding system, but that's just how it works! Regardless, they've both now been overtaken by American Sniper. The Clint Eastwood helmed biopic (which actually stars the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Bradley Cooper) with an estimated $337,209,000. That's quite an achievement, but takes nothing away from Guardians of the Galaxy and just how amazing it was that the Marvel Studios movie which everyone predicted would flop ended up outgrossing characters like Captain America, Spider-Man, and the X-Men! Here's an updated list of 2014's top movies courtesy of Box Office Mojo
