BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Now Looks Set To Open With $90 Million

Guardians of the Galaxy broke records last night with the biggest Thursday opening of 2014, and the latest tracking info and numbers indicate that the James Gunn helmed movie will in fact open to upwards of $90 million, not the originally expected $65 million. Read on for details!

Guardians of the Galaxy looks like a $250 million movie, but with a production budget of only $170 million, Marvel Studios look set to make a very well-deserved profit on James Gunn's superb movie (Kevin Feige and Disney execs clearly realised that they had something special on their hands, hence why they gave a sequel the greenlight at this past weekend's San Diego Comic-Con). Initial estimations had Guardians of the Galaxy opening with $65 million, or $70 million if lucky. Well, the movie - which isn't a sequel and features characters that even die-hard comic book fans aren't overly familiar with - is exceeding expectations, and will have no trouble beating The Bourne Ultimatum's previous August record of $69.3 million. $90 million is now the expected number (after taking around $36 million today), a huge debut for a movie like this in a month where many blockbusters fail to find their footing.
