Reacher Star Alan Alan Ritchson Rumored To Have Been In Talks To Play DCU's Deathstroke... Or Was It Bane?

It seems the character Reacher star Alan Ritchson was speaking to DC Studios about wasn't Batman, but Slade Wilson, who is set to make his DCU debut in the planned Bane and Deathstroke movie...

Back in 2024, the trades reported that a "Bane and Deathstroke" project was in development at DC Studios. Details were sparse at the time, but Captain America: Brave New World writer Matthew Orton was said to be working on the script.

We assumed the movie must have been put on the back burner, but earlier this year, we learned that Superbad director Greg Mottola was being eyed to helm (the filmmaker has also directed a couple of episodes of Peacemaker season 2), with Ilya Naishuller (Nobody, Harcore Henry) also in the mix.

Reacher star Alan Ritchson is a popular fan pick to play Batman, and previously confirmed that he did meet with DC Studios - but not about potentially playing the Dark Knight. Last night, a rumor that Ritchson was in line to play Bane and Josh Brolin was in talks to play Slade Wilson circulated, and while it seems Fortress of DC may have been on to something, they appear to have mixed Ritchson's character up.

According to Jeff Sneider on last night's episode of The Hot Mic, Ritchson was actually speaking to DC about playing Deathstroke, but talks never progressed. Sneider added that there's a chance it could have been Bane, but we really don't see Gunn and Safran casting another non-Latino actor to play that character.

Former Nexus Point News scooper Apocalyptic Horseman has also weighed in. He believes that the role was Ritchson's if he wanted it, but the actor decided to step away because the project has not been officially greenlit and has no director attached (Sneider has also heard that Mottola will not be helming the movie).

Both villains have previously appeared on the big screen, with Tom Hardy playing Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, and Joe Manganiello making a (very) brief appearance as ruthless mercenary Deathstroke in the post-credits scene of Joss Whedon's theatrically released Justice League movie.

Whether these bad guys will be teaming up to take on an even bigger threat or facing off against each other remains to be seen, but we're sure they will clash beforehand, even if they do ultimately put their differences aside. There were rumors that the project might actually be a Secret Six movie, but we won't know for sure until more details are disclosed.

We assume the plan is for one or both characters to come up against the DCU's new take on Batman at some point, possibly even in the planned The Brave and The Bold movie.

This is why I never take anything Sneider says, especially since he admitted last year he sometimes makes up stuff.

Alan Ritchson as Slade would be way too tall imo. He should be Sgt. Rock instead if they're still courting him for any role.

But in the meantime everyone should watch Reacher because it's freaking awesome as always.

@NinnesMBC - are you watching the current season?.

If so then i will say i like it so far but i do think its perhaps on par with S2 as the weakest one as of now for me.

@NinnesMBC - Alan is two inches shorter than slade, so I don't get that at all. I've started to think jim caviezel could make a good deathstroke. Alan is my choice for hawkman though

Ritchson would be perfect as Captain Atom.

Alan Ritchson has the size/body for Bane but I can't see him doing the accent.

@dragon316 - So you're saying because SJ didn't have a Russian accent as Black Widow then Alan Ritchson could play Bane without a south American accent?
Hmmm. Interesting. Let me think about that logic.

@InfinitePunches - that suit was just absolute perfection. Shame we didn't have a better actor to play Arthur in it.

@Super12 - At the very least, having Barry Allen act like Tom Holland Spider-Man makes sense from a marketing perspective, but turning Aquaman into a dudebro will forever baffle me.

After the Supergirl fiasco, the DCU desperately needs recognizable actors who can actually put butts in theater seats. Alan Ritchson isn’t exactly a household name. Sure, he’s got the physique for Bane or Deathstroke, but that’s not what the DCU needs right now. I honestly don’t buy this rumor.

Not Bane in the slightest. Dude is perfect for Hawkman, Orion, or Aquaman.

He would kill it as Orion

@MisterBones - As much as I'd love to see Orion on screen, I don't want to see him dead and passing the mantle to Vykin in his first appearance.

Interesting if true…

I don’t see Gunn casting a non-Latino actor as Bane so it’s likely that Ritchson could have been up for Deathstroke which I don’t think is a good fit given he feels young for that role imo.

Josh Brolin would be a good choice for Slade but if not then Timothy Olyphant as Deathstroke with Michael Mando (reprising the role in live action) as Bane!!.

Either or, I wouldn’t mind. Neither would require good acting so he’d be perfect.
