Man of Tomorrow director James Gunn has taken to Instagram to announce that principal photography has officially wrapped on his Superman sequel.

The filmmaker also shared some behind-the-scenes photos. At a glance, there doesn't appear to be anything particularly revealing here, but the shot of Nicholas Hoult has sparked an intriquing theory.

This scenic location certainly doesn't look like Metropolis, and while there are obviously numerous other possibilities, the photo has led to speculation that Lex Luthor might wind up being exiled to Salvation at the end of the movie.

Gunn has previously confirmed that Salvation, an inter-dimensional world Rick Flag Sr. began using as a Metahuman prison in the Peacemaker Season 2 finale, will be an important element of the DCU going forward.

"Salvation is in a totally different universe. You can't just get on a ship, fly 20 million light-years, and get to Earth. It's a dimensional place. There are so many dimensions that I think it makes it almost impossible to figure out how to get from one to the other; that isn't by chance, which is what it was in this situation."

"I'm building a world. In that world, an aspect of that world is A.R.G.U.S., which is in charge of metahuman activities, and has taken it upon [itself] to start sending metahuman prisoners to Salvation. That's the plan, at least. We'll have to see how that affects and touches everything else. One of our primary DCU characters is there, Peacemaker."

The plot of MOT will focus on the Man of Steel (Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer) have all been confirmed to return, and we recently learned that Aaron Pierre will reprise his Lanterns role as John Stewart.

Adria Arjona will play Maxima (though the Wonder Woman speculation continues), and Xolo Maridueña has also been confirmed to reprise the role of Blue Beetle.

"At its core, it’s about Clark and Lex," Gunn said in a recent interview. "I relate to both of them. I relate to Lex’s ambition and obsession — minus the murder. And I relate to Superman’s belief in people, his Midwestern values. They’re two sides of me."

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

@bobevanz - A billion? Can I quote you on that?

Also, why not two billion? Spider-Man did it in like a week. Surely, this movie will be better.

@bobevanz - I think the movie will be good but unless the marketing goes berserk and word of mouth I doubt this will get 1 billion lol

Let's all hope it's a great movie. Except for that one person here.

@IMCOOLURNOT - I do genuinely hope it's good.

I hope James Gunn has learned some lessons and makes some improvements, gets rid of the crass and slapstick humor, works on the color grading, gives the story more weight, has a better execution on the characterization, and shows a respect and understanding of the source material.

Sadly, I'm not confident that Gunn is the type to reflect on criticism. He strikes me as prideful in many ways. But I do genuinely hope that this movie isn't an abysmal failure.

Despite my laundry list of criticisms, I do think the DCU is still salvageable (if they don't keep Hal dead).

There were some things I liked more about Snyder's adaptation, but for the most part, there's no one in the DCU that's as grossly miscast as some in the DCEU were.

I would love to see Cornsweat and Kyle Chandler in a JLA movie someday.

@InfinitePunches - He definitely seems the type to stick to his style and not change it no matter what valid criticisms come his way. I'm not saying Snyder was any better but it's still a problem nonetheless. Being able to take criticism and have the wisdom and humility to change things doesn't make you lesser than, it makes you less of a dunce lol

I thought Nick Hoult couldn't be in the Harry Potter show because MoT would still be filming??

@HumanRubiksCube - Alright. No. I'm critical of Gunn, but that's ludicrous.

Plenty of people will skip this one, sure. But at least half the people who saw Gunn's Superman liked it enough to go see a sequel. And some will hatewatch. 400 Million minimum. Which would still be a pretty big flop, but this is still a Superman movie at the end of the day. Some will show up for Brainiac. Some will show up for the potential of Wonder Woman or Batman if they're not officially announced.

Sweet , looking forward to MOT and hoping it’s better then Superman which I thought was solid!!.

I would love if Salvation factored into this film and i could see it tbh since i feel like the Quantum Unfolding Chamber will be a major factor in this film and likely the McGuffin that Brainiac is after because after “collecting” Earth , he could use those doorways to to do the same to other universes/planets.

I don’t see Lex having a redemption arc like some weirdly thought he would but instead I could actually see him doubling down because of which he gets thrown into Salvation by the end , perhaps even alongside Rick Flag Sr and Peacemaker gets freed?.

Superman was so lame. Supes was a wuss. Watched Lex blow an innocent Man’s brains out in front of him then when he caught him all he did was give him a whiney lecture.
