Clayface Early Box Office Tracking Could Be More Bad News For DC Studios

Clayface Early Box Office Tracking Could Be More Bad News For DC Studios

Very early box office tracking for DC Studios' Clayface has been revealed, and while there's still time to turn things around, awareness among non-fans is currently lower than it should be.

Supergirl concluded its run at the worldwide box office with a mere $126 million. The losses for DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery were significant, and that will likely be the last movie revolving around the Woman of Tomorrow that fans get for a long time.

Millie Alcock will return as Kara Zor-El in next summer's Man of Tomorrow, a movie James Gunn and Peter Safran are banking on being a much bigger success. In the meantime, there's Clayface, a lower-budget horror movie with an R-rating.

The movie, which, like every DCU project so far, doesn't feature an A-list lead. As October 23 fast approaches, we've had a teaser, a trailer, and an Entertainment Weekly feature, but it seems DC Studios still needs to boost excitement.

According to analyst Brandon Katz, 57 days before it's released, Clayface awareness is "lagging 4-film comp set at similar pre-release point (32% vs 38% avg), but Opening Weekend intent is nearly 2x higher (21% vs 11%), per Greenlight Analytics. Small audience, unusually locked in. Desire is there. It needs more reach."

"To be clear, I'm not knocking WB," he continued. "Most wide release promotional campaigns kick in at six weeks pre-release, with the bulk of the spend in the last three (though it varies film to film and studio by studio). Just sharing long-lead comp tracking patterns."

There is still time to increase this apparent lack of awareness. However, the odds may be stacked against Clayface. For non-comic book readers, the character is an unknown, and trailers have done nothing to connect him to Batman, one of DC's most popular heroes.

There is something of a horror resurgence right now, but Clayface has a lot in common with The Substance, and whether it's bringing anything new to the table for picky moviegoers has yet to be determined.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult-favourite villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit. Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Chantal Nong Vo, Lars P. Winther, Rafi Crohn and Paul Ritchie executive producing.

Watkins' creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris and costume designer Keith Madden. Volker Bertelmann (Conclave) is the movie's composer.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

While the trailers like mildly interesting, I have no desire to see this in theaters. This won't even be a streamer for me, I'll probably wait to find it online.

@BackwardGalaxy - wonder no longer, little lamb. You were wise to come to a comment section expecting to find my opinion. After all, what type of moron goes to a comment section expecting people not to share their takes and opinions. That would be pretty retarded, right?

That is a shame. Looked way more interesting than Gunn's films. I like Pattinson's Batman, and was looking forward to see this

If they’re smart they made this on a much lower budget and they market it as a sticky horror that, oh, just so happens to take place in the DCU. As a DCU film, no one is going just to see Clayface, and as a horror no fan of that genre is going just to see a DCU film

@BackwardGalaxy - The it really comes down to word of mouth. If it’s a good horror like Obsession, it should make a profit (remember a film has to make more than twice its budget to turn a profit). If not, it’s a wash.

Gunn's DCU so far:
Blue Beetle - flop
Superman - barely broke even
Supergirl - one of the biggest flops of all time
Waller - cancelled
Wonder Woman Paradise Lost - cancelled
Batman: Brave and the Bold - "on hold"
And now, even low budgeted Clayface - not looking good.

@Feralwookiee -
He's out as of Supergirl failing and his last film will be 'Man of Tomorrow'.

Paramount also wants to just focus on what DC is known for, which is Batman, if The Batman Part II does well they'll let Matt Reeves do his third film and then branch off that with a timeskip recast of Batman if Pattinson doesn't want to stick around.

Ill do it!!
DCEU Box office total: 18+ Billion.
DCU Box office total: 745 Million.

hell lets just look at the first 2 movies DCEU vs. DCU
Superman/Supergirl - 718 million
Man of Steel/BvS - 1.54 billion

math hardddddd.

@Feralwookiee - Well... He inherited Blue Beetle. Superman actually did pull a profit. Not that Wilding wrote much about it. Supergirl is his flop to own. Canceling TV projects doesnt mean shit. Who cares? Brave and the bold is also not on hold. Keep in mind Feige had is fair share of cancelations and project out on hold in his first few years. Never did get that Nick Fury Movie. Or that Runaways film that was supposed to come out months after Avengers. Ant-Man was out on hold.

@bobevanz - Man of Steel didn't flop and made a lot more than Superman.
BvS didn't flop and made WAY more than Supergirl.
Suicide Squad didn't flop (unlike Gunn's The Suicide Squad) and now Clayface is tracking bad.

The Gunnverse is doing worse than the notorious Snyderverse so no we're not "Better off now".

This is one of those movies that might be for the people that like movies like the horror/thriller movies that have been coming out in the last two years. Who knows with this one. I won't be seeing it. No interest in a movie like this. I love Clayface in the Harley Quinn cartoon.
ManofSteel23
ManofSteel23 - 8/27/2026, 2:26 PM
Even though I assume its alot better than sonys attempt at villian movies it kind of feels like one of those, its clearly aimed at those who just want to see a body horror movie around october and then aimed at those who know who the character is but for me its a weird movie to include so early in this DC universe, i expected great things when all this rebooted and its been a little meh
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 8/27/2026, 2:27 PM
If this can't make a profit on a $40 million budget, then DC on film is screwed. Wouldn't it just need to make $100 million or so ? just how bad of a shape is DC in to not even be able to pull that off ?
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 8/27/2026, 2:39 PM
@TheJok3r - $40 million is just the budget. They need to market it. And as of right now nobody outside of DC Fandom or comic fandom know it's even a thing.
