Mark Ruffalo tells DigitalSpy how he invisions portraying Bruce Banner and The Hulk on screen. We have heard some of this before but much of this is new.
Looking ahead you're sort of going from making a small independent film and you do a lot of those, to making a very big film in The Avengers and you're going to be playing Bruce Banner. I was just wondering (because we have seen so many portrayals of Bruce Banner) how yours is going to be different?
It's like my generations Hamlett. We're all gonna get a shot at it, sadly enough. How do I see it? Um, you know I talked a lot to Joss Wheden the director, you know. We want him to be kind of an everyman, not so dour, probably a little more charming or, you know accessible. You know we're still kind of working it out. The script, I'm not exactly sure what it's gonna end up being but we've talked quite a bit about kind of the Bill Bixby version of The Hulk, you know update it Bruce banner.
Drawing on that a little bit, are you just trying to put all those guys out of your mind, Bill Bixby especially?
I've seen them all. I wouldn't want to put Bill Bixby out of my mind. You know they all have done really cool interesting things with him and hopefully I'll have something to add to the mix that doesn't bore the crap out of everybody.
Well, with Joss Whedon directing, you kind of get the impression that it might be a bit more tongue in cheek. Perhaps you're going to play it completely straight?
No, I think, I have a feeling there will be a little nudge nudge, wink wink. I think Robert Downey has reinvented the genre in a way. You know I talk to him quite a bit (before I took the part) about how it works and how to do it. He said come on we'll have fun, we'll work it out on set. You know I trust him a lot. So I like him, I have a good time with him. I think we'll have a good time playing with it and figuring it out.
