MEN IN BLACK Sequel Officially Moving Forward At Sony; Will Smith Eyed To Return As Agent Jay

Though it's still very early days, Sony Pictures is moving forward with a new Men in Black movie, and the studio wants Will Smith back as Agent Jay...

After successfully breathing new life into the Bad Boys franchise, Sony Pictures has turned its attention back to the Men In Black.

According to Deadline, the studio is developing a new MIB movie (it sounds like it'll be a sequel as opposed to a full reboot), with Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Bremner on board to pen the script.

Though no talent is attached just yet, the report notes that "once Bremner has finished the script, original series star Will Smith would be one of the first to receive it in hopes he would reprise the role of Agent Jay."

Whether Smith would star or play more of a mentor role for a new group of characters is not clear, but Deadline seems pretty sure that the plan is to include Jay in the first draft.

Smith actually hinted that he might be interested in donning the black suit and shades again earlier this year.

“I told myself I was done with sequels. I was like, ‘I’ve made enough sequels. I got some new things I want to make,'” he said. “Literally this morning, an hour before I came down here, they just threw the bag for another Men in Black. I was like, ‘Ah, I’m supposed to be going on tour this summer!'”

“Sony is determined to fix the flaws of Men in Black: International,” a recent Insider Fandom report claimed. “After the debacle of the 2019 movie, Sony has learned their lesson, and now they are keen to bring in Will Smith for the upcoming movie. The executives believe that Will Smith’s exclusion was one of the major reasons for the poor response to the last movie.”

1997's Men in Black was a big critical and commercial hit, and while the next two sequels did pretty well from a box office standpoint, the reviews weren't nearly as favourable. 2019's relaunch starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, Men in Black: International, performed well enough, but was largely viewed as a disappointment due to terrible reviews.

What do you make of this news? Any interest in a new Men in Black movie?

Working for a highly funded yet unofficial government agency, Kay and Jay are the Men in Black, providers of immigration services and regulators of all things alien on Earth. While investigating a series of unregistered close encounters, the MIB agents uncover the deadly plot of an intergalactic terrorist who is on a mission to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies currently in residence in New York City.

Interesting…

I honestly hope Will would come back as J and be the “ K” to a new character as a nice full circle thing

Also does anyone else enjoy the new Bad Boys films a bit more then the original 2?.

@TheVisionary25 - I like that idea, here's hoping it's how this film functions. This way they can use Jay, and step away from Smith at the end of it if they need to, while also keeping the franchise going if this film is good enough with its new lead.

Ive always enjoyed the franchise, minus International. So I'd be happy to see more.

Idgaf. I'm hyped for Nolan being president of the DGA, he's gonna shit in Netflix's cereal big time. They either listen to the demands or all of the talent goes to Disney, Sony, Universal and Paramount. Let them [frick]ing squirm

I do really enjoy these movies, so I’m cautiously optimistic. This should be the final sendoff, though.

I know MIB 1 is most people's favorite, but for me, 3 was. Everything about that one was great, and I hope the next one is similar.

They’ll being Will back after slapping someone at the oscars but Chris Tucker and Jackie are too old and their movie costs too much and excuses excuses etc etc

@Matchesz - Regardless, no one wants to see that shit. Jackie Chan is ANCIENT. There's no real place for him being a lead, IMO. If Rush Hour 4 should get a pass, then a Lethal Weapon 5 with Mel and Glover being the leads should be acceptable. And noooooooooooo one wants to see that sh!t either LOL.

@JayLemleAgain3X - I would see that shit honestly i’m a 90s kid those are all my movies. I miss the days of black and white/asian buddy comedies before race politics was shoved down everyone throats. Blue Streak, Nothing to Lose are another two good ones

@markcassidy - I'm pretty sure it's just Agent J and K. I know they are credited as "Jay" and "Kay" but that's because of Hollywood nonsense that apparently crediting Tommy Lee Jones as "K" is too confusing for audiences because they wouldn't know if it was the letter or just a "kuh" sound, which is ridiculous.

I even went to the deadline article you sourced and they use J in the quote you used, just curious why you changed it to Jay

Gotta love this site. "Hell yeah, Rush Hour 4. Not a stupid retread at all of a 90's early 00's buddy action franchise!"

Men in Black 5 a day later: "this is stupid, no one wants this, let the franchise be, do we really need to dig up a 90's early 00's buddy action franchise!?!"

There's one key difference here of course, but the guilty parties will never admit what it is...

MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/5/2025, 11:47 AM
@SATW42 - I'm not sure what the difference you're referring to is, but I will say this site has disliked Will Smith well before the slap, and I have never understood why.

@MyCoolYoung - a certain orange someone asked for Rush Hour 4. He didn't ask for this. That's literally the only difference in the "nobody asked for this" department.

I thought Will Smith was the studio janitor now. His cred is long since gone.

JayLemleAgain3X
JayLemleAgain3X - 12/5/2025, 11:40 AM
This is a MUCH better decision vs Rush Hour 4. Will Smith is still somewhat bankable.

On a side note, I am STILL disappointed he did that slave movie. That's a movie you do at the START of your career. When you are an A-List celeb like Smith, that should be a no-no. I remember taking a class back in college about this, and it was an interesting take. Black actors are given the slave and cross-dressing roles when they are new, and the actors don't know any better because they want to get paid and become famous. Smith doing that bullsh!t????? So disappointing.

Tessa was the weak link in the last movie. She’s not main character material, that’s my opinion at least.

Will gets all this hate for the slap, but he’s still a damn good actor and still draws an audience. Everyone hating is living in a glass house throwing rocks. Get real, everyone makes mistakes. Some bigger than others, no one’s perfect all the time.

Legit the dark ages for filmmaking.

Funny how nearly 20 years ago I remember Alien Resurrection & Alien Resurrection being deemed tired old franchises where as Men In Black and Rush Hour were considered fresh new movies that audiences loved. Now....my have the tables have turned. An MIB4 and a Rush Hour 4....the tired old franchises.

This will probably do better than Rush Hour 4. But if they are smart, they will keep the budget down. I guess we are getting a bunch of legacy sequels. Looking forward to Lethal Weapon 5, Die Hard 6, Trading Places 2, Home Alone 3 (I don’t count those bs sequels), Weekend at Bernie’s 3, Police Academy 7, Airplane 3, etc…
