SAG-AFTRA Slams Creation Of AI "Actress" Tilly Norwood: "It Has No Life Experience To Draw From"

We recently got word that talent agents were interested in signing "AI actress," Tilly Norwood, and SAG-AFTRA has now released a statement in response...

Though some have questioned the validity of her statement, the creator of AI "actress" Tilly Norwood, Eline Van der Velden, claiming that talent agents were already interested in signing her digital character has been met with a lot of backlash.

A number of well-known Hollywood actors such as Melissa Barrera, Kiersey Clemons, Mara Wilson and Ralph Ineson were quick to share their disdain for the announcement, which prompted the following response from Van der Velden.

“To those who have expressed anger over the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art. Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation, and that in itself shows the power of creativity."

“I see AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool, a new paintbrush. Just as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting, AI offers another way to imagine and build stories. I’m an actor myself, and nothing – certainly not an AI character – can take away the craft or joy of human performance.”

SAG-AFTRA is not buying Van der Velden's attempt at clarification, however. The acting guild released the following statement, condemning Norwood's creation and refusing to acknowledge her as an actor.

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation. It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience. It doesn’t solve any ‘problem’ — it creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.”

“Signatory producers should be aware that they may not use synthetic performers without complying with our contractual obligations, which require notice and bargaining whenever a synthetic performer is going to be used.”

Many feel that the advent of AI is simply something we're going to have to get used to, and there are those that view the introduction of a fully AI performer as not being all that different to the practice of "resurrecting" a deceased actor via CGI (Peter Cushing in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, for example).

At any rate, it seems clear that Hollywood has no intention of making things easy for any studio that does intend to play ball, so it should be interesting to see how things unfold from here.

@FrankenDad - we are 10 or so years away from the top music artists and film productions being AI. Everything will be a corporate owned algorithm. They will just punch in the right numbers and spew out exactly what you want to see and hear.

Will be interesting to see how Hollywood producers will find a way to sexually abuse an AI. They'll still try to find a way I would assume though. The corruption in Hollywood goes deep.

@kider2 - It must be reassuring to believe that Hollywood producers are the primary perpetrators of sexual abuse, when it's actually parents, friends of families, educators, and members of the clergy most of the time. Ignorance being bliss and whatnot.

@Clintthahamster - What a condescending reply to my cynical comment. I didn't say Hollywood was the main cause. You are expanding the conversation while I was solely commenting on the behavior of some producers. That you think I deny the existence of those other things is an assumption on your part.

Clintthahamster - 9/30/2025, 11:13 AM
@kider2 - You said "the corruption Hollywood goes deep." Seems an odd thing to call out if you know that sexual abuse is no more pervasive in Hollywood than it is in any other industry or community. But sure, maybe you click on articles about clergy or middle school teachers and leave comments about sexual abuse there, too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@kider2 - But yes, I came in way to hot on that response, apologies. I'm just extra prickly around sentiment that seems QAnon-adjacent.
kider2
kider2 - 9/30/2025, 11:35 AM
@Clintthahamster - I'm not QAnon adjacent. Hollywood still has a clear history of sexual abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people. Luckily many of the people involved got exposed but that doesn't mean its over and not still happening. What I was talking about corruption running deep was not just about sexual abuse. Think of things like drug use forced onto actor and actressses by the studio. Many examples of such things in the past and still some today.

@Shivermetimbers - He didn't delete his comments they are still there maybe he blocked you?

As to sexualizing AI that is the point is it not? AI can not give emotional performances. It can't bring lived experiences to a role. The only real goal of such a thing would be to exploit it for profit. The goal would be to create an Idol ideal personality type which they market and sell. This is like people forming "relationships" with influencers and Singers etc. They want people to get attached to the actress they created. In which way that relationship takes shape isn't relevant as long as it generates profit. And seeing as this is not a real person with no rights or feelings they can and likely will go much further than they normally would or could. Otherwise there would be point in hiring AI over a cheap actress trying to make their big break.

@kider2 - That would be interesting if he blocked me. I dont think I have ever interacted with him, lol. I understand your point, but I would disagree about the sexualization of AI being "the point". The point is to replace people who they need to pay to do work and to do it faster. Its across the board and not just regarding acting. Sexualizing it may be a part of the equation, but hardly its main intent.

@kider2 - "Hollywood still has a clear history of sexual abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people."

No more so than any other industry, is what I'm getting at. It's better publicized, but any industry that has men in power and women/children within arms reach is going to have issues with sexual assault.

Anyway, you're not wrong that it's a problem, and I'm not wrong that it's far more widespread than just the entertainment industry. 🤝

"It doesn’t solve any ‘problem’"

It solves the problem of having to pay people, which is what A.I has been primarily designed to do; people are just too stupid to see it. Within the next five years, there will likely not be a single profession that isn't taken over by A.I, with all the people who previously occupied those positions either living at home with their parents or homeless on the street.

Patient2670 - 9/30/2025, 11:51 AM
@TheJok3r - It actually doesn't solve the problem of paying people either. Any AI actor, especially one seeking representation by an agency, will inevitably be owned by their creator, or designer- however you want to describe it. If the AI actor becomes popular or successful, that creator/designer will raise their rates, just like a human. And believe me, their starting rates will be at least as high as any human counterpart.
By the way, I think this is a trick that only works once. Any studio that decides to go this route, will simply develope their own AI actors- scores of them to suit any needs they have, and they'll own them all. Instead oof paying actors, they'll have to pay designers and programmers to train the AI. Just wait until they figure out that an AI actor won't refuse to do the things that a human won't do on camera. What it will all come down to, is whether or not actual people protest, by refusing to pay to see AI performers... Which I don't expect will happen.
