Well, it looks like we can wave goodbye to that ludicrous "popular film" Oscar category... for the time being, at least.

Amid backlash, The The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reversed its decision and the category will not be presented at this year's Oscar ceremony. However, the door is still open to implement it in 2020.

According to THR, The Academy "will continue to discuss the idea for the new award and will examine and seek additional input regarding the new category."

When plans for the category were first announced, many viewed it as a way for The Academy to continue to avoid giving due recognition to blockbuster-type movies such as Star Wars and Marvel's Black Panther by essentially ensuring that they would never be in contention for the same awards as more "serious" films.

The 92nd Academy Awards will take place on Feb. 9, 2020.
