SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Star Nic Cage Has Met With Sony To Discuss Live-Action SPIDER-MAN NOIR

Last year, it was revealed that Sony is moving forward with a live-action Spider-Man Noir TV series destined for Prime Video. It's part of the studio's plan to expand the wall-crawler's world on the small screen and joined Angela Kang's (The Walking Dead) planned Silk: Spider Society (which is now being creatively overhauled).

Oren Uziel (The Lost City) has been tapped to serve as the project's writer and executive producer, though The Punisher's Steve Lightfoot was added as co-showrunner this past December.

They're currently developing Spider-Man Noir alongside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and longtime Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal. Of course, the project won't be the first time this particular version of Spider-Man graces our screens.

Nic Cage lent his voice to the fan-favourite Peter Parker Variant in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and, in an interview with Collider (via Toonado.com), he confirmed talks with Sony Pictures have taken place about him potentially reprising the role in the live-action series!

"Well, I can say that we have been talking. It's no secret that I love the character," the actor revealed. "I think the character provides another mash-up of sorts. I can combine my favorite golden age performances, i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee's masterpiece."

"I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash-up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney, but nothing's definitive yet," Cage continued. "It's just conversation."

It's previously been reported that the untitled series will follow an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City. Individuals with knowledge of the project have told the trades that the show will be set in its own universe and the main character will not be Peter Parker, meaning Cage would be playing a different Spider-Man.

That wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but it does likely mean the show won't reinvent Peter's world with a noir backdrop. With or without Cage beneath the mask, creating a new character to web into action could ultimately hurt the series and runs the risk of alienating fans.

However, it's also Nic Cage playing Spider-Man, and that alone promises to be a huge draw!

It's worth noting that these comments come from Cage not long after reports he's met with Sony about playing Spider-Man Noir's lead, so this should be an interesting story to keep an eye on in the months ahead.
