Iman Vellani Believes Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Success Disproves Notion Of Superhero Fatigue

Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani has shared her thoughts on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and feels the movie's massive box office success is proof that "superhero fatigue" doesn't exist...

While it's very clear that superhero movies, in general, are not the massive box office draw they once were, every so often a blockbuster like Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes along to prove that there's still plenty of life in the genre.

You'll still see some outlets returning to the "superhero fatigue" excuse when something like Supergirl crashes and burns, but just because audiences are no longer packing the theaters for anything DC or Marvel Studios rolls out, it doesn't mean they won't show up when a marquee character like Spider-Man features in a damn good movie.

Ms. Marvel and The Marvels star Iman Vellani spoke about Brand New Day - which is already on its way to grossing $2 billion worldwide - during an appearance on Revenge of the Podcast, and she believes that the movie's box office success proves that superhero fatigue simply doesn't exist.

"People showed up on the first week," Vellani said. "Nobody really believed in superhero fatigue. Nobody really believed that this movie was going to fail and they were over [superhero movies]. They wanted it to succeed. I think we’re so used to being cynical and assuming that everything new coming out is going to suck and it’s all propaganda, or people’s attention spans are low. No, we can appreciate a good thing when we see it."

Of course, one could argue that cinemagoers don't always show up for a "good" superhero movie, but it may simply be a case of a major A-list hero like Spider-Man encouraging more people to see their film on the big screen rather than waiting for it to hit streaming.

Following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins a brand new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult and living alone after erasing himself and the memories of him from those he loves. In a New York that no longer knows his name, he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to protecting his city as Spider-Man full-time.

But as the demands on him grow, he is put under increasing pressure. This triggers an unexpected physical change that threatens his existence, while a strange wave of crime emerges - and gives rise to one of the most dangerous threats he has ever faced.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters.

It's shitty movie fatigue

No it does not. Spiderman is bigger than superheroes. No other hero has as much pull as him, not even Batman. The MCU and DCU are still in trouble.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

Nobody screams "horror movie fatigue" when Smile 2 crashes and burns or "action movie fatigue" when "and Expendables movie doesnt do well. Only superhero movies this exists with among critics. Because comics books still have that that "you need pictures to read" stigma these movies still arent taken seriously no matter how much money they make. Its time for this disrespect to end...

@krayzeman - Do you think Smile and Expendables are actually horror and action juggernauts that are bigger than anything else or...did you use really bad comparisons?

I don’t think superhero fatigue has hit either. I think it’s a mix of bad movie fatigue and woke ideology fatigue.

@Odekahn

What CBMs were too woke for you?

@regmovieguy - Ironically, using the term "woke" as a derogatory term acknowledges the existence of larger social, economic and political influences (the essence of "woke") as well as a disinclination to think about them too hard.

@Rosraf - Yeah, but bigoted people like @odekahn have minds too small to comprehend that. They only see what they've been spoonfed, generational loser-ship if you will. being "woke" to them is like a Trumper screaming "bewared the communists!" w/out really knowing what they are talking bout

@Odekahn - Female lead superhero movies are 9 times out of 10 going to bomb or not doing well at the box.The only two times they've done well were the by product of the interest in the DCEU and the MCU at the time. Also the whole Gunnish over the top/stupid humor in superhero movies are played out also.

@Pathogen - But in most cases, identifying something as "woke" means at least some level of awareness and acknowledgement of larger social, economic and political influences on some aspect of our society, which is itself "wokeness." It may be selective, but it is also ultimately a self-defeating, self-owning use of the term. It's hard to identify something as woke without being woke, at least on some level.

Its subpar or unwanted superhero movie/show fatigue

I dont think fatigue has anything to do with it...People are just alot more selective about what they will actually go to the theaters for.

If Odyssey and Brand New Day show one thing, it's that there's definitely no Tom Holland and Zendeya fatigue.

That said, I think it's mediocrity fatigue like many already pointed out. If audiences now they're gonna get something spectacular, they'll show up (me included).

Superhero fatigue is real. The market is oversaturated with comicbook media however some IPs such as Spiderman are immune. An A-list hero, people love the webslinger but other characters and stories are ignored if the story or presentation itself does not stand out. Avengers is fine, Batman is good, superman too. Very little else actually captures people’s attention these days like it used to. When you’ve seen one superhero origins story or reboot you’ve seen them all. Supergirl cough cough.

It's because it's Spider-Man. I still think comic book movies are in uncharted territory, despite Brand New Day doing well. No doubt Avengers: Doomsday will do well too. I think people are becoming more selective when it comes to comic book movies. If it's Spider-Man, the Avengers, Batman, or an A-list team-upfilm, and it's good? People will show up.
