At the Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere, singer Steve Lacy—whose song, "oh yeah?" is featured in the movie—was asked what he liked most about the blockbuster while being interviewed on the red carpet.
The event was being live-streamed on social media, and after months, if not years, of secrecy, Lacy casually revealed that Sadie Sink had been cast as the MCU's Jean Grey (and that she was the movie's "villain"). Fortunately, it was only one day before the movie's release, but his comments went viral and even received mainstream media attention.
"I like Jean," the singer told the clearly surprised interviewer at the premiere. "She's the villain, but there's a reason to her madness." Asked if he'd dropped a spoiler, Lacy doubled down by saying, "I like her."
Now, the singer has broken his silence on what happened (and the subsequent backlash) in an interview on the NFR Podcast.
"I didn’t know I couldn’t do that," Lacy confessed. "Jean Grey, huh? I didn’t know; no one told me it was a secret." He then added with a laugh, "I did nothing wrong!"
If no one prepped Lacy on what he should and shouldn't say about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, then it's hard to hold it against him. At that point, Sink's role had been reported on by multiple reliable sources, and many reviews the next day didn't shy away from mentioning the X-Men icon's MCU debut.
However, you have to feel for anyone who tuned into that livestream, only to have the movie's biggest surprise spoiled for them!
"Sadie’s character is one that our fans know has immense significance within the Marvel Universe, and she plays a key role in the future of the MCU," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently teased. "I’m just happy that the secret is finally out and that Sadie can stop dodging the question."
