Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been dominating the box office since it swung into theaters on July 31, but it has been doing so with very little in the way of competition... until now?
This weekend, two dino-related movies will attempt to take a bite out of Brand New Day's box office, and at least marginally impact its momentum: Paramount's animated PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and Warner Bros.' The End of Oak Street.
The latter, which stars Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway as parents doing their utmost to protect their kids from ravenous prehistoric beasts, opens in North American theaters on Friday, with the studio projecting a debut in the range of $18 million to $23 million, plus another $20 million to $25 million overseas for a potential global opening of just shy of $50 million.
Dinosaurs tend to do big business on the big screen, and The End of Oak Street should also benefit from a positive critical reception (84% on Rotten Tomatoes).
As for the PAW Patrol pups, Paramount projects a domestic opening in the mid-to-high teens, and the movie has already surpassed $27 million in 30 international markets. The family-friendly adventure was also a big hit with critics (85% on RT).
It's unlikely that either movie will hinder Brand New Day's record-breaking run to any significant degree, of course. The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed film is now approaching $1.9 billion worldwide, and became the fastest movie ever to reach $700 million domestically earlier today. Later on, it will pass the lifetime gross of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Other new theatrical releases this weekend include thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey, and the Kristen Stewart-led stoner comedy The Wrong Girls.

Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, The End of Oak Street also features Maisy Stella and Christian Convery. The film is written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and produced by J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella, Jon Cohen, David Robert Mitchell, Matt Jackson and Tommy Harper.
The executive producers are Chris Bender, Jake Weiner, Joanne Lee and Leeann Stonebreaker. Mitchell’s team behind the camera includes director of photography Michael Gioulakis, production designer Maya Shimoguchi, editor John Axelrad, composer Michael Giacchino and costume designer Erin Benach.
