Richard Donner's original Superman movie is still widely regarded as one of the best comic book adaptations of all time, and now we get to have a glimpse into the past to see how the film was promoted in the buildup to its release.

Writer Colin Smith shared images of 1978 billboards via Twitter, and he reveals that the seminal shot of Clark Kent tearing his shirt open to reveal the "S" symbol was utilized as a teaser before the big reveal of Christopher Reeve taking flight as Superman was unveiled.

This sort of promotion for superhero/blockbuster type movies is common now, or course, but back then something like this would have been pretty much unprecedented.
