James Gunn Says MAN OF TOMORROW Is "Lex's Story Too" And Teases Ramifications Of PEACEMAKER Cameo

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has revealed more about how he's approaching Man of Tomorrow (which is "Lex's story too") and elaborates on the importance of Lex Luthor's Peacemaker cameo heading into that.

Heading into Superman, James Gunn was no stranger to comic book adaptations, having worked on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker

However, the Man of Steel is a very different type of superhero, and Gunn has made no secret of the fact that he took a very different approach to the character. That extended to action and flying scenes, the latter of which proved surprisingly divisive.

Speaking with Collider, the DC Studios co-CEO explained how what he learned from Superman will factor into 2027's Man of Tomorrow

"I did a lot of experimental stuff with shooting flying, and I think I learned a lot about what worked and what didn't work as well," Gunn revealed. "And so one of the things I'm the most excited about are these few action sequences in Man of Tomorrow. And so putting those together has been really fun. I always learn a lot with every movie in terms of what works and what doesn't."

"I think the proof of concept worked in terms of who Superman was. And then, there are things that I think that can be improved. And not only improved, but just different," he continued. "I like my movies to be different. Guardians 1 is not the same as Guardians 3. They're different."

"And Man of Tomorrow will not be the same as Superman. And it is Lex's story too, so it's the two of them. That colors it in a totally different way," the filmmaker added.

It was down to Superman to reintroduce moviegoers to the DC Universe. The pressure is no longer on Gunn to "save" this franchise after the DCEU's disastrous final few years, freeing him up to take a bolder approach to Man of Tomorrow that'll likely be less concerned with introducing new characters (the Justice Gang, for example).

The site also asked Gunn whether we'll see more of Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in the remaining two episodes of Peacemaker season 2.

"Oh no, no, we're not going to be seeing Nick necessarily, but his deal is important to the rest of the season, incredibly important, not only to the rest of the season, but to the Man of Tomorrow as well."

Elaboratng on how much of a must-see Peacemaker is before watching Man of Tomorrow, Gunn noted, "I don't want people to feel like, if they like Superman and don't like Peacemaker, I don't want them to have to watch Peacemaker or vice versa."

"So there's things that are connected, but when I'm running Man of Tomorrow, I make sure that people can come in just on Man of Tomorrow and understand everything, you know, especially not having to watch Peacemaker."

Gunn has said that all these DCU projects are part of his 10-year plan, though we still don't know what his endgame is. Following the Justice Gang's introduction, common sense says the director plans to eventually helm a Justice League movie.

Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Why is peacemaker being made out to have such an effect on this universe going forward? Very few people are watching this trash. It would be a different story if we were talking about lanterns or the like

I thought Hoult was a decent Lex but I wasn't really sold until the last episode of Peacemaker.

@ObserverIO - Yeah, it always felt like we got villain of the week Lex mostly in the film, which I was ok with for the most part. He should get fleshed out more. I hope the All Star inspiration carries over to the next film also. Something similar to Lex being told he could have saved the world a long time ago if he really wanted to by Supes would be chef's kiss, and a timely sentiment at that.

@TheRevelation - Timely indeed. The Nobel Peace Prize does seem to appeal to the vanity of those supervillains who have already conquered both the yuppie world and the political world. It's just a shame it takes them so long to get around to it.

Also him being in prison now perfectly sets up that All Star scene.

@ImNoSuperMan @GuardianAngel - The episode has been out since last Thursday, and multiple websites, James Gunn himself, and the show's official social accounts have all openly discussed Lex Luthor's cameo. How long are we supposed to keep spoiler tags for? A week? A month? Forever? It reaches a point where it is what it is, and the only way I can imagine you not seeing this mentioned anywhere is if this website is the only one on the internet you use.

And "clicks" has nothing to do with it. Shoving a bright red "[SPOILER]" into the headline would likely increase interest, but it reaches a point where you're just insulting people by spoiler tagging something that is no longer a spoiler just to try and boost clicks.

@JoshWilding - @JoshWilding What if I told you that I specifically avoid social media accounts and websites that spoil without warning? One thing I always appreciate about this site are the spoiler warnings, even with rumors. I get that your life is revolved around news like this, and I appreciate the work you do, but some of us need a couple days to catch up and have learned to expect that reporters will understand that and not ruin the experience.

@GuardianAngel - What if I told you... it's not technically a spoiler.

@GuardianAngel - I do 100% understand where you're coming from, but by Monday morning, all of Thursday night, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday had passed. I do feel like that's a respectful amount of time, but point taken, and I'll bear it in mind for the future.

Per usual, you suck @JoshWilding. Spoiled a 3 day old episode for clicks. I have been coming to this site since the aughts but this type of trash is gonna lose me.

I’m glad he realized that some things about the flying didn’t work so I hope he improves on that moving forward or does something different.

Anyway looking forward to MOT and how it feels different from Superman in some ways (perhaps darker given the inclusion of Lex as a co-lead)!!.

Looking forward to 'MAN OF TOMORROW' and just about everything the DCU and Gunn is cooking up.

Why? Like @SteviesRightFoo said, who's watching this garbage? Why is he using something absolutely NO ONE is watching or talking about to set up a greater universe? Has he learned NOTHING from Marvel/Disney? People despise this homework crap!!! Gunn is the worst thing to happen to DC in decades

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@WalletsClosed - I just think its incredibly unlucky to have 2 terrible DC universes in a row. They have amazing characters being made laughing stocks

While I already liked Lex’s portrayal in the movie, I like it all the more here. Defeated, yet still confident in more serious tone. Kind of similar when he meet with the government officials there first time in the movie(outside of the butt******* comment).

The fact that Lex Luthor shot Superman's friend in front of him for no reason should prevent Superman from working with him. If he does, then he would be insulting his memory. It would be a jarring development even for Superman. There is nothing that Lex Luthor could provide that someone like Mr. Terrific or Batman, if he were around, could not also offer.

If Gunn writes in some lame scene where the guy's mother, father or FILL IN THE BLANK family member tells Superman he would have wanted him to work with Lex Luthor, this will be the first film that would probably make me hurl my lunch.

@Forthas - Buddy, Heroes needing to work together with their arch villains to face a bigger threat has been a long standing trope that has spanned decades! In every comic run, tv show, etc this has occurred. It does not mean at all that Lex is a good guy again and you know that.

My theory is that its a Brainiac level threat and they need Lex's help to stop it (which has happened so many times) as Lex wants the world for himself. By the end, Superman will still not trust him, but the public eye will change and will likely lead to the infamous storyline of Lex Luthor being President.

I noticed something last night. The LED lights in the background of the intro are tracing little Swastikas.

It never fully shows a Swastika, but they trace them.

@TheVandalore -

The season has been kind of boring for me until that reveal. Now the show started to get interesting
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 9/29/2025, 9:39 AM
@HulkisHoly - I caught up on it because of the hype built for the final 3 episodes, but this season has been a mixed bag. I initially stopped watching at the first episode orgy, I was over it then.

And nothing in the episodes that have followed have been worth the investment of my time. Not as utterly garbage as Creature Commandos was, I had to try multiple times to finish those episodes... Just a trash show from top to bottom.

I somewhat enjoyed Peacemaker season 1, but this season has been hit and miss for me post orgy scene. I just honestly hate Gunn's work. His writing irritates me to my core. I see the intentions of his gags and it's just fart jokes and dumb shit. Bird blindness..... Are we 5 year olds? That shits dumb, and it kept coming back as a gag and it was stupid.

The Dimension X stuff doesn't save the show for me, especially because Gunn has been going out of his way to frame it as a perfect utopia, like the world really would be perfect if only whites were in power in Gunn's view. He spent 6 episodes saying a Nazi America is ideal society.

Kinda weird. His whole DCU is too weird and creepy for me, man.

If you don’t like Gunn’s writing, didn’t like CC, etc then why watch the show at all?
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 9/29/2025, 10:33 AM
@HulkisHoly - 1) I love DC Comics

2) I'm a completionist at heart

3) I like to make up my own mind about things and give everything somewhat of a chance

4) I'm a glutton for punishment

5) Superman is my favorite superhero since I was a kid so I feel personally invested in his "world" and wether I like it or not Gunn is currently in charge of that world, so I feel compelled to check it out one way or another.
