MAN OF TOMORROW: Will Fans Buy Into Kal-El Teaming With Lex Luthor After The Events Of SUPERMAN?

James Gunn has now confirmed that Man of Tomorrow will see Kal-El and Lex Luthor joining forces to combat a larger threat, but will fans fully buy into this team-up after what went down in Superman?

Last week, James Gunn announced the title and release date for the next instalment in DC Studios' Superman Saga, Man of Tomorrow, and story details (some confirmed, others rumored) have been filtering through since (you can check out a breakdown of what we know so far here).

We know that David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor, and are said to be the co-leads of the movie.

Though it already seemed pretty obvious after that Jim Lee artwork, Gunn confirmed that these bitter enemies will put their differences aside and join forces (temporarily, at least) to combat a "much, much bigger threat" during a recent interview with Howard Stern.

“It’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it," he added. "It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I Just love the script so much.”

The prospect of a Supes/Lex team-up is undeniably intriguing, and these lifelong foes have joined forces in the comics. However, some seem to feel that it might be difficult to buy into their alliance after the events of Superman, which saw Luthor callously execute an innocent man right in front of a powerless Man of Steel.

Yes, Lex is a villain and villains do villainous things, but will it be at all believable if Superman is able to put this particular act behind him and coexist with a cold-blooded killer? It will probably all depend on how their dynamic is handled in the movie. Full-on buddy cop vibes will surely leave a bad taste, but if Luthor's actions and Clark's reaction are at least addressed, it should be easier to accept a temporary partnership for the greater good.

What do you think? Is a Superman/Lex Luthor team-up something you'll be able to buy into?

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Production is expected to get underway next summer.

Superman also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho (we wouldn't be at all surprised if they also return for Man of Tomorrow).

The cast also features Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as "Ma" and "Pa" Kent, and Milly Alcock's Supergirl makes her DCU debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie.

"And that’s a wrap," Gunn posted last year when filming concluded. "God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set - and for that I am forever grateful."

You can check out a synopsis for the movie below.

"In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind."

@Lisa89 - The end of Superman 2 nailed how a Superman and Lex interaction should go. Superman calmly tricked Lex into letting Zod know about the red sun chamber so he could de-power the villains knowing that Lex would betray him. Gunn’s Superman would scream at Lex and throw a fit.

This is a brilliant idea yes it has been done before but never with THE biggest hero. My dream Batman movie would be akin to under the hood where Batman has to actually save the joker

@MarkCassidy - No one said that they are going to be friends in the team up. it is really a stupid question to ask, not knowing the circumstances on which they team up, although it is a great question to ask if you just want to stir the pot.

@RolandD - agreed. The premise of this article is absurd. Will people buy it? Sure, or they should. Since it’s happened in the comics multiple times. Plus, this Superman really really looks for the best in people and seems all about second chances. The idea that he’d tolerate a team up for presumably some real deal cause is entirely in the scope of this particular take on Superman.

I think it should be an uneasy alliance rather then anything else…

Lex wouldn’t really trust Supes (and likely have his own agenda) while Clark shouldn’t fully trust Lex either even though he may have some hope that the latter could still change hence that being where the friction & conflict comes from besides the external threat both are facing.

I doubt Gunn goes the buddy route nor should he given how Superman ended.

Of course they will. Snyder's neck-breaking grimdark Superman? No way. Gunn's new hopeful 'sees the good in everyone' punk rock Superman? YEAH !! It makes perfect sense that he would team up with Lex to take on a bigger threat. The real question is, will Lex double-cross him?

@dracula - Yup and if well handled the GA easily buys into such things easily such as Wanda and Bro joining forces against Ultron within one film or Loki helping Thor a couple times after the first film, Nebula eventualy joining the Avengers and GotG fully by the time of Endgame, Magneto and Prof X's on again/off again enemy/friends relationship with the FoxMen films etc.

I mean Aquaman 2 had ample issues but the bro's joining forces wasn't one of them just like having Batman V Superman as a film still worked as a premise for most even if ample issues with the narrative.

The question tends to be more around HOW they join forces, and how the relationship ends, is it FF2 style where forced by the powers that be to join forces with little to no trust throughout and Doom turning on the team after working with them to depower the SS or Doc Oc turning back to good in order to help save the day in Spider-Man 2.

I mean I didn't watch much of all the various Superman TV shows, but Lex being a frenemy was explored in all of those wasn't he?

All that said, like with the first film, I get why Gunn doesn't get universal trust with how he handles such a script even if he has now had mostly positive reception for his five CBM's for Marvel and DC (plus his TV series) due to the tones of most of them maybe not ideal for this premise in the minds of many.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Gunn either: a) doesn’t know what he’s doing or b) making shit up as he goes along.

The way he ended up “Superman”, Lex fiercely hated Superman. He tried to have him be publicly humiliated, slandered, almost killed a number of times, beaten up, killed an innocent human being in front of Superman, and jeopardized countless lives.

Why would Superman work with someone like that?

And I know… he’s done this before countless times in the cartoons and comics, but if you depict a character that is so passionately opposed to and jealous of another character to the point that character tries everything in their power to bring that character and his image down and nearly kill him… why, logically, would you go team up with him?

Thats like if the Avengers decided that after Thanos Snapped half of Earth, that maybe they could team up to take on a threat far worse than Thanos. Or if the Rebels decided to work with Darth Vader despite the fact he slaughtered hundreds if not thousands of their own people.

Like it sounds fine on paper or in a comic or cartoon, but the way Gunn has set this up… ehh I don’t know. Big stretch.

@WelcomeBackFrank - might be interesting if the movie is from the perspective of Lex. Seeing from his view how Superman is evil. Don’t think they will but could be a fun change. There’s a movie called wonder about a deformed boy who’s pretty remarkable and he gets bullied and then in the sequel it’s about the bully.

@WelcomeBackFrank - one of Superman's most endearing traits is not giving up on people, and his pleed to Lex to realize their shared Greatest Strength being their humanity makes it seem reasonable for Superman. Especially if the threat is something too big. That being said it would absolutely have to be some sort of Alien to get Lex involved. I don't think Lex would show any less vitriol for another Alien. In any case it could be a situation of "The Devil you know is better than the Devil you don't" For Lex. To Lex Superman is always going to be that POS Alien, but there are worse ones out there. He knows where he stands with Superman where he won't with say Brainiac or Darkseid.

Arthorious - 9/13/2025, 8:11 AM
@WelcomeBackFrank - in the Justice League tv show Superman reluctantly teamed up with Darkseid after Darkseid brainwashed him, made him attack his adopted homeworld, and murdered a man right in front of him. The threat would have to be that catastrophic for Superman to team up with him as we’ve seen plenty of times on other comics.

@WelcomeBackFrank - Luke did sort of team up with Vader in Jedi when Vader dispatched of the emperor. Not to mention the team up of Rey and Kylo.
LenSpiderman
LenSpiderman - 9/13/2025, 4:23 PM
@WelcomeBackFrank - being as Lex has already managed to clone supes, maybe something hinders Superman’s powers in a way that Lex can help with, and the threat being something that Lex also fears, he decides to help. Or perhaps it’s phase 2 of turning “ultraman” into doomsday and Lex feels both responsible for the threat, and is someone with crucial knowledge of the biology of the monster and is able to pinpoint or create weaknesses.

Far be it from me to give any advice to James Gunn since I want to see him fail and be fired but that said the ONLY way to do this is to have Superman work with a variant of Lex Luthor (in the same way Peacemaker has met his variant) and spend the entire film not knowing if he can trust him. If he works with the same guy who shot his friend and threatened to kill his parents it will make Superman seem like he is even weaker than he is already being seen as. It is enough that he chooses not to kill Lex Luthor but to go a step further and team up with him would ruin the character. Gunn cannot use the excuse that Lex Luthor is the only one smart enough to tackle world wide threats when he is already teaming with Mr. Terrific and presumably even if they have not met - Batman is active in that world.
Mongrol
Mongrol - 9/13/2025, 12:54 AM
@Forthas -

That would be a bad idea that ignores the particular stakes of a story and would undermine both characters.

There can easily be a story plot where there is a threat to mankind that only Lex can help with and would compel Superman to disregard his personal grievances and choose to work with Lex for the greater good.

The notion that Mr. Terrific or Batman are somehow always equal to or greater than Lex’s abilities and resources in any given situation is nonsense. It’s video game logic being brought to film-making.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/13/2025, 6:39 AM
@Forthas - I mean it is fine to not like a hopefull boy scout version of Superman and prefer something grittier but the kind of character he was in the Donner films or now with Gunn's 100% would put aside past differences with a prior villain hoping to help them become better and to assist in order to take on a bigger threat. Variant stuff is never needed for most versions of Superman to work with Lex even if lacking trust and a variant completely undermines all the stakes setup by how evil Lex was in the first film thus all negative with no positive IMO going down that path.

Sure, there are others who could assist Supes but the whole reason Lex as a mortal human works as the main villain for Superman is due to him having levels of genious and traits that Mr. Terrific and Batman lack thus in certain narratives Luthor would absolutely be the optimal character to turn to AND you have that underlying tension of if/when Lex will turn on Superman you wouldn't have with another hero which COULD evolve Kal El INTO a grittier less trusting/hopefull character even from a more purist starting point IF that was what anyone wanted.

I would buy it.

"Only I get to kill you."

"No one rules or destroys the Earth except me."

"I'm only doing this just to get at the big bad for screwing me over."

"I'm no one's slave."

There are like countless reasons governed by either pettiness or self-interest where Lex would entertain a temporary alliance with Supes, especially if he gets to turn on him later.

Of course it is believable, depending on the circumstances. A team up does not suggest that they like each other. This is a common dynamic used in fiction. The fact that they don’t trust each other, or more accurately probably Clark doesn’t trust Lex should be part of the story. To ask this question about knowing the circumstances under which they form an uneasy alliance. . To ask this question about knowing the circumstances under which they form an uneasy alliance, is a foolish question. The question Mark Cassidy, is rage bait.

@RolandD - Gunn has sold multiple films around the whole idea of characters who dont trust each other witha mix of hero and villains work for most with his GotG and Suicide Squad films. Ample ways it can go wrong, like with Aquaman 2 and Fantastic Four 2, but ample ways it can work well in various ways such as Days of Futures past, T2, Thor Ragnarok etc.

Yeah even in the tv show Justice League, Superman teamed up with Darkseid to fight against Brainiac. The same Darkseid who brainwashed him, made Superman attack his adopted world and murdered a man right in front of him too. Clark wasn’t going to help out either till convinced by Batman (and Bruce was ultimately wrong for that one). But yeah it’s nothing new here.

Shoot Batman teamed up with the Joker to take on the Batman who laughs.

Everyone forgets that these are comic books with soap opera like stories. Easy to clear Lex of killing Malik. Clayface movie comes out prior to Man of Tomorrow. So if they had Lex hire Clayface to be Malik when he was shot, Lex now just looks like a big jerk for making Superman think his friend was killed because of him and not a cold blooded murderer. Seems like a Lex thing to do.
