Aaron Pierre Reflects On Being Dropped From BLADE; New Details On LANTERNS' Hal Jordan/John Stewart Dynamic

Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre has talked more about learning he'd no longer star in Marvel Studios' Blade, while Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy has shared some intriguing new plot details about the show.

Aaron Pierre has repeatedly impressed, whether it's in Netflix's action-packed Rebel Ridge or as the voice of the title character in Mufasa: The Lion King. A few years ago, he looked set to join the MCU with a lead role in Marvel Studios' Blade

As we write this, the movie remains trapped in development hell, and, unfortunately, Pierre was dropped from Blade during one of its many creative team changes. Of course, he's since landed a lead role in the DCU as Lanterns' co-lead, John Stewart, so it's fair to say the actor has landed on his feet.

In a Men's Health profile, Pierre revealed that he was shooting Rebel Ridge when the news that he would no longer star in Blade came his way.

"I remember being cast in Blade and feeling elated," the actor recalled. "But something I learned during that time was that until you step foot on the set, you haven’t commenced work. It just took a different creative direction, and I was no longer a part of it. You have to accept that."

The site also caught up with Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy, who describes the upcoming HBO series as "as much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show." However, that means Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and Pierre's John Stewart will butt heads.

"Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?" Mundy revealed. "That push and pull between those two characters is really important. So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you’re yelling and screaming."

"That’s what we’re trying to convey: He knows he belongs, so he doesn’t have to overcompensate. There’s a real balance there that’s just innately inside of Aaron. He’s big," the showrunner, who counts True Detective and Ozark among his credits, continued. "He’s an intimidating presence just physically. But there’s a softness to him, too. There’s a thoughtfulness. You can’t teach that."

It sounds a lot like the DCU's Hal might be training up his replacement in the Green Lantern Corps, an intriguing dynamic that's likely to excite and disappoint fans of the character in equal measure.

Still, John's live-action debut is long overdue, and Pierre is well aware of the pressure that comes with playing such a beloved figure from the comics.

"For me, the character just radiates strength and fortitude," he said. "That hunger to be the best version of yourself, which also holds you accountable when you’re not.” And on the off chance Pierre doesn’t hold himself accountable, comics fans will. That’s the flip side of signing on to a beloved IP—you’re not the only one who feels ownership of it."

It's not clear when we'll get another look at Lanterns. DC Studios did release a relatively unrevealing shot of Hal and John side-by-side, while Superman offered an idea of what a Green Lantern's powers look like, courtesy of Guy Gardner.

DC Studios' Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is serving as showrunner and executive producer and will write Lanterns with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book scribe Tom King (Supergirl). The cast includes Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro.

Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the supporting cast.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO in 2026.

Damn shame, with his build and acting, he'd be a good choice for a younger Blade. Rebel Ridge is proof he's good with action.

he was dropped from something that would not have been made. he probably would have wasted his life and acting availability waiting to work on it

Im excited for this show. Hoping this will be the the DC show that sets a standard for them. Superman and peacemaker were underwhelming for me.

Calling it now, they're building to DCAU-style Justice League.

@asherman93 - I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case considering Gunn has said the DCAU is an influence on this universe.

@asherman93 - Yeah i think we will get a single Justice League movie (maybe vs legion of doom since Lex is a big player in the DCU) with all the OG members and after that they will build up to Justice League Unlimited

@asherman93 - Naw, Barry should be the DCU Flash, you can’t have Wally be the Flash before Barry. Put Wally on the Teen Titans as Kid Flash.

However if they go younger then either Jack Champion or Rudy Pankow.

I cannot wait for this, so excited to finally get a good GL show on screen. Loved Guy Gardner in Superman actually, but he's no Hal or John. I just hope they do Hal justice and don't off him to pave the way for John.

Well maybe if you didn’t cast a frickin’ 60 year old as Hal by an actor who is as bad a choice for the character as he was for Cable, you wouldn’t need for him to step aside.

@soberchimera - Gunn is drawing inspiration from the DC properties that people love and know the most (j
JLU cartoon). Don't be surprised if the DCU flash is wally west

soberchimera - 10/28/2025, 12:15 PM
@ClungeOfSteel - He shouldn’t use a cartoon that was made 20 years ago for his present-day blueprint. There are DC properties made since then that people know and love that feature Hal and Barry.
ClungeOfSteel
ClungeOfSteel - 10/28/2025, 1:02 PM
@soberchimera - of course there are but when we're talking general audience wise a lot of people are more familiar with John.

I grew up on JLU but since then I've enjoy that animated GL show and read more about Hal & kyle 😅

Just like how people were so obsessed with the Teen Tintans version of cyborg when it came to JL I think Gunn is Going with the more recognised version of GL for his universe.

Odekahn - 10/28/2025, 1:41 PM
@ClungeOfSteel - nah. There’s more DCAU movies that star Hal over John, and those are more recent than the JLA cartoon. His comics don’t sell near what Hal’s do. John doesn’t have the story arcs to pull from what Hal does. There’s an agenda here and it stinks.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 10/28/2025, 2:04 PM
@ClungeOfSteel - Disagree, a lot more people grew up on the GL animated series than you realize, plus the slew of other DC media featuring Hal since the DCAU ended with JLU.

@JackDeth - Read the comics then, GL never sold better than when Geoff Johns brought Hal back as the main GL. Are all the people who bought those books masochists who like being bored? And btw, when Geoffrey Thorne made John the main GL a few years ago, that series couldn’t even last past 12 issues before they brought back Hal again and now the series is selling far better, so the evidence doesn’t back you up my friend.

Aaron as John Stewart is one of the best CBM castings i really hope they dont waste it, if you watched Rebel Ridge you can get a glimpse of how prefect this casting is he embodies both comics and the JL animated show John Stewart perfectly. The casting with John and Sinestro is soo good that i really dont mind an older Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler is also a great actor).

It just sucks about Blade but it is what it is , I’m a big believer in everything happens for a reason so this falls into that since if Pierre had done that then he may not have been able to do Lanterns…

Anyway speaking of Lanterns , the comments sound good to me but I can understand fan grievances in regards to us having an already established & lived in DCU in which Hal is a seasoned veteran whose story we may see at the tail end of his career (and possibly life).

However I like the buddy cop dynamic they seem to be going for with Hal being the veteran near retirement (who may or may not want to continue) and John being the rookie cop who is set to take his place so I’m looking forward to seeing that relationship & chemistry between Kyle Chandler & Aaron Pierre!!.

In regards to DC next year , I am interested in Supergirl & Clayface but Lanterns is my most anticipated upcoming DCU project as of now!!.

"Our show is in a lot of ways about replacement—when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?"

And this is why I’m not excited for this. It doesn’t make sense to not go with the most popular and iconic Green Lantern. He’s only included to be replaced. Smdh.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 10/28/2025, 12:47 PM
@Odekahn - Green Lantern has for a long time been a mantle with others taking over.
It makes sense to consolidate that with a show.
Odekahn
Odekahn - 10/28/2025, 1:37 PM
@Slotherin - this is replacement. This is shoehorning in John over Hal simply for DEI nonsense. Hal is by far the most popular GL. Not exploring his story arcs, or worse - giving his story arcs to John, is such a waste and missed opportunity.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 10/28/2025, 2:22 PM
@Odekahn - The level of disrespect Hal and Barry get from the casual fanbase is astounding. They were the two characters that launched the Silver Age that reinvigorated the general public’s in superheroes. If those two characters hadn’t been successful, there would have been no Justice League of America and then later no Marvel Universe. People who say Hal and Barry are boring don’t actually think that or they haven’t read their books, they just have an agenda to get other people in their costumes that THEY made famous.
