Lanterns First 5 Minutes Reveals Young Hal Jordan And John Stewart's Intense Origin Story

HBO has released the first five minutes of this Sunday's Lanterns premiere, revealing how long Hal Jordan has been serving as Green Lantern and part of John Stewart's intense childhood.

Ahead of Sunday's premiere, HBO has released the first 5 minutes of Lanterns. Opening in 1996, it reveals that Hal Jordan has been serving as Green Lantern since 1986. However, there's still no sign of his iconic domino mask during this prime-time interview (as his secret identity is publicly known, it may have been dropped from the show).

A young John Stewart is wowed by Hal, but finds himself punished for watching TV late at night—and taught to be fearless—by his father, who takes him outside and shoots an apple off the top of his head.

We then jump to 2016, where John is picked up by an antagonistic Hal, seemingly to continue or start his training as the next Green Lantern. DC Studios has yet to explain why Guy Gardner was Green Lantern in 2025 or where Hal and John were during the events of Superman.

During a recent interview with The New York Times, showrunner Chris Mundy confirmed that Lanterns was conceived as a multi-season series. However, he reiterated that this first batch of episodes is largely standalone.

"We’re trying to really put John Stewart on his feet inside our own show, but then, once he’s on his feet, he can walk around in the rest of the DC-verse," Mundy explained, adding that "we had no directives" from DC Studios to include Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner as connective tissue to Superman.

Writer and producer Tom King "hinted at a major plot twist and a break with canon, both of which could prove controversial," according to the site, with Damon Lindelof acknowledging that they had "a real fear of screwing it up." He added that he wants fans to "feel how much we cared about Hal and John," but admits, "If it doesn’t, it’s going to fall on its face."

Watch this extended clip from Lanterns in the players below.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.

Lanterns is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes, and is based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO on August 16.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - @Se4M4NSt4ine - I mean I don´t love shelving the secret identity so soon, but they said that he had it for 10 years, so I can forgive it. It makes sense in-universe.

Nothing about this has the stink of James Gunn on it. I loved it.

@NotMyDiagnosis - I believe it was meant to establish that Hal is nostalgic for HIS childhood.

@Lisa89 - that part was obvious but im wondering if all of the tunes in this show HAL is nostalgic for are really just a selection of GUNNS old playlist.

@MaxPaint - You're not believing hard enough. Look at the slate. Those first three projects already came out before Woman of Tomorrow!

The DCU is thriving. You just have to ignore the haters and the misleading numbers and the false rumors about projects being cancelled.

You have to trust James Gunn. The Authority was an excellent movie/series! I loved it!

I hope that in future seasons, if Gunn allows it, we'll see more of the Silver Age of the DCU. Perhaps Evil Star vs. Hal Jordan or Goldface.

A son of Starro could have controlled a man with superpowers, and thus the villain known as Evil Star was born. Evil Star wanted to pave the way for a great alien conquest, which Green Lantern prevented.

These could be classic stories. Then kids play pretend fights. One chooses the role of Green Lantern, and the other the role of Evil Star. In the DCU, kids fantasize about being heroes or villains.

These childhood games foreshadow a generation of young people like Stewart's Green Lantern or Robin.

It’s a fun way to to build the world that already is aware of and had superheroes , aliens etc.

I honestly quite liked that clip!!.

They say that Earth first became aware of the Green Lanterns ten years ago from 1996 which would be 1986 but they don’t say that’s when Hal became GL so it might have been even a bit before that like a few years or so?.

Regardless in this continuity , he’s been a GL for atleast 30 years now which is interesting.

The bit with a young John and his dad was interesting and I don’t think it’s as straightforward as his father being harsh & punishing him for watching tv at night..

We saw in a trailer recently that it looks like a Guardian reveals themselves in front of a young version of John’s mom (played by Jasmine Cephas Jones) who seems to be holding him as a baby so I wonder if the Guardians have already personally chosen John that far in advance for some reason to be a GL?.

This could be his dad training him to be fearless and John watching Hal could be him staking out his “competition” unbeknownst to his siblings hence his dad asking him “what’s his name” but we’ll see since that’s just my wild speculation!!.
