Star Wars Episode X Plot Leak Reveals Franchise's New Leads And Plans For Rey Skywalker

Lucasfilm is reportedly looking to cast two young leads for Jon Watts' Star Wars Episode X, with an orphaned young man and a royal woman set to embark on an adventure alongside Rey.

Star Wars Episode X is moving forward at Lucasfilm, with Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) directing from a script by Simon Kinberg (Dark Phoenix). The movie signals the studio's intention to continue the Skywalker Saga in the post-Rise of Skywalker timeline, a decision which has split opinions.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, early plot details for the movie have leaked, starting with a report from Daniel Richtman. He's learned that Watts' Episode X will have two leads, with Rey serving as a mentor to them. While her movie isn't dead, it is on hold, suggesting the project—first announced in 2023—has likely been sidelined to continue her story here instead.

Trusted Star Wars insider @fiveswalker has since weighed in, sharing additional context. Lucasfilm is reportedly looking to cast a male and female lead, likely unknowns and in their early to mid-20s.

"Episode X will have duo leads like Finn and Rey," the scooper explains. "Their dynamic is very much that archetype, but with a more clearly defined romantic component. [The] male lead comes from a harsh orphaned background just like Rey and is swept up into the story after being implicated in a killing."

"[The] female lead comes from high society, a perfectionist. Royalty," they continued. "She and the male lead are caught up in a big adventure together, with her bringing him into the larger 'world's stage' of Star Wars characters we know."

Later, they added that the male lead will not be Flynn Gray's unnamed character from Star Wars: Starfighter, despite rumours about the upcoming movie pointing to him becoming one of Rey's apprentices.

It's certainly intriguing, and it will be interesting to see what, if any, link these two have to the wider Star Wars Galaxy. Rey is technically the last Skywalker standing, though Episode X could be Lucasfilm's opportunity to bring back Kylo Ren, a.k.a. Ben Solo.

The Mandalorian and Grogu wasn't the box office hit Disney and Lucasfilm expected. Now, all eyes will be on next summer's Star Wars: Starfighter to see if the Star Wars franchise can shrug off the perception that it's a streaming property.

Watts is no stranger to Star Wars. He developed and directed episodes of Disney+'s Skeleton Crew, which holds a 92% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The filmmaker also has blockbuster experience, having helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home for Marvel Studios.

Kinberg's track record isn't quite as good. He wrote the Oscar-nominated Ridley Scott film The Martian, but is also responsible for duds like X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four, and Dark Phoenix.

Stay tuned for updates on Star Wars Episode X as we have them.

Actually, he should have just killed them all. Think of all the pain that could have prevented.

@WakandaTech - Dunno feels equally as dumb to go backwards especially when the future is already set and stone. Thats why the Harry Potter Prequels and The Hobbit are so underwelming and uninteresting.

Only thing left to do is time travel, multi verse, or reboot.

Mega puke.

They have the opportunity to jump 10,000 years into the future and start with something exciting and new.

But instead, they want to continue the pain of the last horrible trilogy. More "progressive" Hollywood agenda garbage incoming.

@DocSpock - Yeah sounds just like a rehash of Vaders and Padmes terrible romance from the prequel trilogy. Its baffling on how each new trilogy just keeps on rehashing george lucas's failures and keep trying to make it work.

It is truly painful. When I was in my 20s, Star Wars trilogy and Superman 1&2 were so freaking awesome.

Now...yech!

I wonder if Luke Skywalker will appear as a force ghost, or just a voice, and the young man is probably Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker’s son, with strong ties to the force.

@Timerider - Dunno, Mark Hamil has been vocal about never wanting to work with Disney again becuz they bow down to trump. But they own his likeliness as Luke Skywalker so they dont need his blessing or permission to recreate him but it will be a pr disaster for episode X if they do.

Article says from director Jon Watts (Spider-man Brand New Day). He didn't direct Brand New Day or have anything to do with that movie. Who writes this garbage.

Disney just wants to sell more toys and merchandise, make lots of money. Star Wars Episode X: The Search for more money.

More details revealed: To make things fresh, Star Wars EpX will see a rebellious type group fight against a large empire. This new order will build a large mega weapon that can blow up planets.

Sounds like a horrible pitch. Just give the franchise to A24 and let them make something weird and unique like Backroooms lol. A24s Elden Ring looks more interesting.

Cool if true…

The male lead being a fugitive of some sorts caught up in a murder sounds like an interesting approach into the story that these SW films haven’t done yet.

I’m assuming he’ll be force sensitive and the one Rey becomes a mentor to while the female lead is not but capable in her own way akin to Princess Leia though we’ll see.

Anyway , Kinberg is a mixed bag at best imo but I like Jon Watts so as of now I’m cautiously optimistic/intrigued about this film & potential new trilogy!!.

10 years ago we had people still clinging on to the idea that Force Awakens was a great movie. As bad as it was, Disney still had the power to fool people much the same way persons still think Zack Snyder's DC movies were good.

It took the atrocious Last Jedi & abominable Rise of Rey Palpatine to jolt the Disney cult out of Disney's control.

And now, Disney cannot get people to watch Star Wars in theaters.

Disney+'s Skeleton Crew might hold a 92% but who made up that 92%? If it's the last remaining members of the Disney cult, then of course it is so high. Snyder could put out a new project, where only his cult watches and it would get a high score.
