Lanterns Producer Says Green Lantern Ring Is "Sexist," Some Writers Knew Nothing About The Character

Lanterns writer and co-executive producer Vanessa Baden Kelly has divided opinions by branding the show's Green Lantern Corps ring a "sexist" and admitting some writers were unfamiliar with the hero.

Most reviews have praised Lanterns and, according to HBO, the premiere delivered strong viewership numbers. While Season 2 hasn't been officially greenlit, writers have started meeting to plot out where the story could go next.

The reaction from fans to Lanterns has been a little more mixed. While the show isn't quite at the halfway point, there have been complaints about Hal Jordan's apparent death, big changes to the lore, and a unique approach to John Stewart's origin story.

The show's creatives haven't necessarily helped matters, whether it's Damon Lindelof calling the "Green" in Green Lantern "stupid" or the host of DC Studios' official podcast branding Hal Jordan a racist

Now, Lanterns writer and co-executive producer Vanessa Baden Kelly has made a startling admission in an interview with Collider

"I'll start by saying that by having Tom King and Damon Lindelof in the room, with Tom King offering so many Green Lantern books, those conversations are really robust because many of us were more casual Green Lantern fans," she told the site. "Some didn't know anything about Green Lantern."

As a result, it was down to King to tell them things like, "Oh, no, that doesn't change. That is who John Stewart is," and "It's just not going to happen. Sorry, that's never going to work." For Kelly, that was key in making sure they were "respectful to the canon while simultaneously being a fresh take and a more human, grounded version of who this character is."

The conversation took a bit of a peculiar turn when Kelly explained why the Green Lantern Corps ring—which chose John Stewart Sr. before seemingly settling for Hal—didn't pick Bernadette Stewart.

"The thing that I would always say in the room is that if the ring wasn't sexist, Bernadette would have been chosen, because she really is just the most fearless of everybody," she revealed. "For me personally, as a writer, and I feel like most of the writers’ room would probably agree, this idea of willpower and overcoming fear is so different depending on where you stand."

Kelly continued, "So, what Bernadette was pointing out to them is, 'You guys don't take any care in learning the differences of the people that you're asking for this. So, yes, you got a shit face for this job, and it's clear you don't like him, but here's why you don't like who you got — because you're actually not picking the bravest people. You're picking the people dumb enough to not be scared.'"

While it's possible that Kelly's comments about the ring being sexist were made in jest, these remarks have already gained traction on social media as an example of the apparent disdain DC Studios has for Hal Jordan.

With five more episodes left, it's too soon to make any sort of conclusion about that, especially as we still don't know how this story ends. However, if Lanterns doesn't stick the landing, then it will come as another blow to the still-young DCU.

The first three episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

Wow James Gunn you allowed this writing team with all their bullshit?

Airforce pilots especially test pilots are generally dumb, too dumb to be scared. The people aiming a gun and shooting apples off their kid's head are smart though. With just a logical amount of bravery.

@hierarchy - I mean , John does realize they were crazy and even says so to Lianna but the parents (not justifying the approaches they took) were essentially building a GL from birth essentially like the parents of talented athletes did such as the Williams sisters or Jalen Brunson etc.

@TheVisionary25 - I agree, I do not see John as being crazy or dumb but saying he should not have been chosen and is dumb with the previous candidate (dad) doing what he is doing. Is illogical.

@hierarchy - the previous candidate aka John’s dad did that after he was chosen and reluctantly so , atleast more then the mom.

It’s never stated in the show that they were brave to do nor does John endorse their behavior really..

I cannot believe how bad this is…. Hal is racist, the ring and guardians are racist, now the ring is sexist? This show is the final boss of the liberal agenda, the writers were unfamiliar with green lantern lololol. I almost finished episode 3 and now I’m done.

Also, Josh is having a field day with dropping this gossip about the DCU. Before anyone gripes about this:

BLAME WB AND JAMES GUNN

This is bad press for the DCU because the WB has created bad press for itself. Josh Is doing his job (and relishing the increased engagement lol).

In Green Lantern #76 (1970), the creative team kicked off their legendary "Hard Traveling Heroes" run by completely upending Hal Jordan's worldview. They explicitly designed Hal to represent the rigid, establishment-minded, law-and-order conservative, pairing him against the ultra-liberal, anti-establishment Green Arrow (Oliver Queen). In that issue, Hal steps in to stop what he thinks is a standard street mugging, only to find out the man he "saved" is a predatory slumlord trying to evict impoverished tenants. When Hal tries to defend his old-school worldview, an older Black local confronts him with one of the most famous panels in comic book history, calling him out for saving aliens across the galaxy ("blue-skins, orange-skins, purple-skins") while completely ignoring systemic racism and poverty on Earth: "Only there's skins you never bothered with... the black skins! I want to know... how come?! Answer me that, Mr. Green Lantern!"O'Neil and Adams used Hal as a proxy to critique institutional blindness and establishment complacency, forcing the character to wake up to real-world social ills like racism, poverty, and corruption rather than just punching cosmic supervillains.

@InfinitePunches - tragically under-appreciated show. I agree, GLTAS really is one of the best animated projects DC's put out. Well written, super enjoyable, good character development, and loves & respects the lore. Not my favorite animation style, but you get over that quick.

@Super12 - 100%. The animation style works much better in something like this than it does in Rebels. I think the color scheme and contrast help a lot too.

funny how sites like this are the only place i hear any baby boo boo bitching about this show, in the real world, comic shops, friends etc i hear nothing but good things, critics love it. i guess online jackasses being online jackasses at its finest. refreshing to see how real actual people react to cool shows and movies.

@supermanrex - To be fair, it’s only one writer stoking the flames. This site has a pretty strong conservative lean, and Josh has a strange personal vendetta against Gunn that he can’t help bringing up in all his reporting. It’s especially strange because he’s started using anti-woke talking points to tear down Lanterns when in the past he’d defend projects like She-Hulk and The Marvels for being review-bombed by “fragile men”, in his words.
Irregular
Irregular - 9/3/2026, 1:16 PM
@tmp3 - Josh has admitted in the past that he is extremely biased with Marvel. So no matter what, Josh is going to find ways to help his argument in his writing and make Marvel seem perfect. Even if it means turning on his beliefs because he knows it'll get him more clicks.

@Irregular - Changing your political beliefs wholesale to own James Gunn… this some Vegeta level of hating haha
supermanrex
supermanrex - 9/3/2026, 1:43 PM
@tmp3 - i think the only bias josh has is going where the clicks are. if clicks and engagement require negative slanted articles against marvel, it will happen. i seen it. anytime a MCU film has a tough box office run, the articles beating a dead horse into the ground are left and right on this site. remember the constant bri larson negative/instigating style articles, around the marvels? the engagement for this site is rage, toxicity, and negativity. splash in some politics when an actor practices their right of free speech and boom clicks clicks click click click.

The way this site keeps reporting on this show through the most chud-filled lens is just embarrassing
