James Gunn On [SPOILER]'s Villainous Turn In PEACEMAKER Season 2 And Teases Surprise Link To LANTERNS

James Gunn has addressed more of Peacemaker Season 2's biggest reveals, talking in detail about Rick Flag Sr.'s story arc, and how Checkmate and Salvation could factor into the DCU moving forward...

The Peacemaker Season 2 finale made it very clear that Rick Flag Sr. is now a villain. He laughs and jokes with Lex Luthor's lackeys while loyal A.R.G.U.S. agents are brutally killed in the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, and robs Chris Smith of any due process by kidnapping him and leaving the former Task Force X member stranded in "Salvation."

That's the alternate reality prison he intends to trap the world's metahumans in...only the villainous ones, of course, but it seems likely that he plans to send many of the world's heroes there, as well.

Talking to Screen Brief, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was asked about Rick's new status quo in the DCU after he was portrayed in a largely heroic light in Creature Commandos and Superman

"Rick is dumb," he started. "I love the character of Rick Flag, but he thinks he is way smarter than he is. And we see it continuously. He thinks can compete with Lex, and there’s just no way he’s going to be able to. It’s not going to be great for him."

Elaborating on his villainous turn, the filmmaker said, "We saw a guy in Creature Commandos, who seems at first like he’s a good guy but he’s absolutely not. He screws up everything, again, because he thinks smarter than Waller—which he isn’t. And he messes that up, and he falls for this woman, and is played by her from the beginning."

"That to me, is the fun thing about Rick Flag. He’s totally imperfect. I certainly don’t think Rick Flag Sr is evil, I really don’t," Gunn added. "Whenever Frank Grillo talks about the character he’s always like 'I don’t see him as a villain, I see him as being a little obsessive about revenge, but I don’t know, someone kills my son, I’m not sure I wouldn’t feel the same way.'"

"I have compassion for Rick Flag, I don’t think he’s allowing himself to see the whole truth. The worst thing about Rick Flag is that he’s focused on the guy he can do something about more easily, rather than focusing on Amanda Waller who would be more difficult to confront," he continued. "Because Amanda Waller was the one that gave the order to kill Rick Flag Jr."

Talking more about Salvation, Gunn confirmed that the concept was always part of his plan for the DCU, revealing that his intention is for it to explore how "bad metahumans are going to have to figure out a new way to create a society."

Checkmate is another important addition to the DCU, of course, and Gunn revealed that both it and Salvation will be connected to other DC Studios series. "Lanterns is very connected to all of that. It may not seem like it, but it is all very connected."

While Peacemaker Season 2 didn't live up to the high expectations of many fans, Gunn has set the stage for some exciting developments in the DCU with how things unfolded in the finale. Man of Tomorrow will likely be where he touches on many of these ideas, and he added that a "pretty pronounced" threat will be what convinces Lex to team up with Superman.

However, he was quick to say, "I think that Lex Luthor is mostly concerned about Lex Luthor, so we’ll see what threatens Lex Luthor."

All episodes of Peacemaker are now streaming on HBO Max.

Man I gotta say, that finale fell all the way flat to me.

@UnderBelly - the whole series felt incredibly boring but that final episode was so dull and at times it felt really amateurish.
The dialogue in the opening scene for example - just awful.
But, hey… At least it was another chance for Gunn to give his wife some more screen time.

@NodrickStripson - The giddy childlike turn of Flagg Sr was cringe...I was at some point thinking, theyre importers, but no it was the terrible writing and directing.

What was the point in some of those characters too? It did nothing to push the story forward and they were too many characters just for comic relief.

Like wtf....? Shit was horrible. It weird to say this, but Cena deserved better.

Bring on Lanterns though. I need some better writing.

I literally just wanna see Peacemaker beat the ever-living sh1t out of Rick Flag Sr. His smug look sending Smith into that dimension needs to be punched that old-a$$ face.

I'd personally enjoy that then go to my bunk for happy time.

This episode made me wish Clayface whooped Rick's ass again.

Gunn sure as hell knows how to do a 180 when it comes to audience sympathy or lack thereof for his characters.

Why do you keep saying he’s a villain? His motivations are understandable. Arkham and Belle Reeve can’t contain all the Metahumans and some of them do some really messed up stuff. Finding a place for the ones who cause trouble to go seems really humane. He accomplished his goals and he chose Peacemaker because he killed his son. I mean honestly, Rick Flag Sr. could have offed Peacemaker and I wouldn’t find a problem with it. His plan isn’t some dastardly plot.

@JonAwesome - Id say forging paperwork and circumventing the judicial system to strand him on a planet for life for essentially being a soldier following orders is pretty villainous. Dont get me wrong, after these 2 seasons I dont really like any of these characters. The only "good" one seems to be adabayo but she's pretty quick to side with violent people without blinking an eye herself. Im finding them all more and more unlikable. Even if their motivations are understandable good people dont fall susceptible to their darker tendencies, villains do.

Why build up to a Nazi world for most of the season and then have the finale be something else entirely . I'd have thought they'd go back in do something about Earth X or even some closure for Keith and Chris. Instead we got two unnecessary rock band montages.

@Ojeet78 - Right? There is nothing Nazi about removing a certain race of people by putting them in a prison.
epc1122
epc1122 - 10/10/2025, 8:43 PM
@Ojeet78 - I think the Nazi earth was to serve a few purposes. That different worlds exist, show peacemaker a world that has his family alive and potential happiness (forks in our lives and what would have happened if he made different choices or if circumstances were different ) and that in the real world, racism still exists and we don’t even see or realize it. Keith can come back later but it wasn’t really about that or leaves it open for another story.

@epc1122 - I get what the point was but it wasn't done well.
Ojeet78
Ojeet78 - 10/10/2025, 10:36 PM
@ObserverIO - Not sure what you mean but if this about them putting metahumans in Salvation that's hardly a surprise. Lex was locking people away in another dimension with govt. support in Superman. Hence, the Salvation thing didn't come as a surprise. Also to leave such a plot for the final few minutes of the finale means your show is not complete.

So, I kind of like the interconnectivity idea.

But Peacemaker season 2 sucked so badly that it kinda makes that seem pointless. Between this mess and the Batman fiasco, I am very worried for the new DCU.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 10/10/2025, 4:41 PM
@DocSpock - Gunn has used up all his milage already in the DCU and was running on fumes in that last episode. The only good thing has been Cena, who has really proven himself to be a good actor.

The immaturity and lack of growth in Gunn as a writer also has me concerned. Im worried about Man of Tomorrow now. Its crazy to say, but Peacemaker season 1 was so good because there was also no expectation of setting up a new universe whereas in season 2 he just shat the bed... and there was barely any character growth aside from 2 or 3.

Urgh what a dissapointment.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 10/10/2025, 5:22 PM
@UnderBelly -

I completely agree. That means you are a genius too!!

And how many years into this new DCU until Superman meets Batman? It is ridiculous that that is nowhere in sight.

@DocSpock - what Batman fiasco...not kidding?
DocSpock
DocSpock - 10/10/2025, 8:27 PM
@OriginalGusto1 -

Allowing the delays on Batman 2 which will arrive some 5.5 years after the first one. Dropping the ball on Brave & Bold with no DCU appearance of Batman for no telling how long. And still keeping MooseSh!tty on board to direct it.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/11/2025, 3:29 AM
@DocSpock - They should just fold Brave and the Bold into The Batman II and call it 2 Batmen 2 Many.
NodrickStripson
NodrickStripson - 10/11/2025, 5:47 AM
@DocSpock - they should just never have bothered trying to make it all connected. Just because the MCU exists doesn’t mean to say that every studio suddenly has to have their own universe.
I’ve always thought that the WB/DC movies would be better if they were just standalone stories. They can have sequels, sure, but they exist in their own bubble. The overriding desire to emulate Marvel and the MCU is eventually going to cripple DC.
Just my opinion…
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/10/2025, 5:29 PM
I think it could have been executed a bit better/fleshed out more but I think Flagg going from “hero” to villain has made sense given the pieces there such as blinding revenge against Chris aswell as his concern at the end of Superman about metahumans affecting the world etc.

In regards to Lanterns , I wonder if the mystery they are solving is tied to Salvation and that time has passed where there are more prisoners and one dies and is dumped onto Earth perhaps?.

Anyway , I have liked the DCU so far and Gunn’s 3 projects but I’m glad we are getting some projects other then his voice next year with Lanterns ,Clayface & Supergirl!!.

Didn't really feel like a heel turn to me. He had it in for Peacemaker this whole season. I'm with everyone else though. This last episode was really disappointing what otherwise was a really fun season. Would have liked more Adrian though. He's my favorite on the show. Hard to believe he's the same guy who played OG Dickon Tarly

@MisterBones - He hyped the last three episodes up way too much.
Why were they held back, what was the spoiler, Nic Hoult? Yeah that's not really something you need to keep under lock and key, it's a cameo from Superman. The first episode had multiple cameos from Superman.
