Earlier this month, Superman star David Corenswet shared a photo of himself and John Cena in costume as the Man of Steel and Chris Smith.

Superman and Peacemaker season 2 were in production at the same time, but it still ignited speculation about the possibility of Corenswet appearing in the HBO Max series. After all, James Gunn has repeatedly teased a huge cameo in the show's secretive final few episodes.

GQ recently caught up with Cena for what proved to be a fascinating, insightful conversation with the WWE Superstar and DCU star.

While he chose his words carefully when pushed on a possible appearance from Superman in Peacemaker, the former Undisputed WWE Champion told the full story behind their meeting and explained why he wanted to meet Corenswet.

"Well, I won't bury the lead, you're talking to the wrong guy because, man, I could write my own story of where I think it's going and all that does is set up expectations that might not be met. And that's just not something that I do in life. I can tell you the story behind David and I, and that photo where I'm dressed as Peacemaker, is I knew that they were finishing up filming Superman and I desperately wanted to meet David."

"I wanted to meet the new Superman and just lend my services, like, 'Hey, man, your life is about to change and I've heard that you've been doing an incredible job. I want to thank you because if you suck, that means DC sucks, which means we got a bigger hole to dig out of. So thank you so much for giving this your all. As someone who has been far more exposed to the media than I have formal acting training, if I can help you in any way, please, here's my number, let me know.'"

"And David couldn't have been nicer. He's an absolute class act, and James couldn't have made a better choice. I'm so glad everything went well [with Superman], because he had earned that. I don't use the word 'deserve.' He has absolutely earned whatever success and future opportunities he's been given. I really wanted to meet Superman and offer my help and services in any way."

"David is Superman. That's not something you take lightly. Peacemaker is a new guy, [or] an unknown character coming from the annals of wherever. James himself was like, 'Don't read the comic. I'm going to make this guy my own.' So, completely clean slate. But there are names in the superhero realm where you just can't fake it. They have a weight of importance before you even say your first word, and Superman is certainly one of those. So I really just want to meet Superman."

Recently, we learned that Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista was Gunn's first choice to play Peacemaker in 2021's The Suicide Squad. He ultimately had to pass on the role due to scheduling conflicts, leading the filmmaker to another professional wrestler in Cena.

Asked for his thoughts on that, Cena replied, "Well, I mean, first of all, I could care less about being anybody's first, second, third or fourth pick. Opportunity in life comes to you in a myriad of different ways, and if I wanted to be salty about like, 'Oh, I wasn't first pick, that's beneath me.' I wouldn't have ever gotten a chance. And keep in mind I got killed off in The Suicide Squad."

"I mean, in filming that movie with James, we developed a friendship and I think I checked a lot of boxes of people he likes to work with professionally," he continued. "And on top of that, we developed a relationship personally and we do stay in a lot of the same lanes."

"I think he saw nuance in the performance he was able to bring out of me,'" Cena said of how Peacemaker went from being a one-off to him having a recurring role in the DCEU/DCU. "'There's more to this guy. And as a storyteller and as someone who puts words on paper and wants to bring those words to life and be prolific and have depth, I think this guy can help me out and I'd like to try to work with him again.' So that's why I ended up in the hospital instead of the morgue."

Beyond Peacemaker season 2, the expectation is that Cena will return as Chris in the highly anticipated Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Whether we'll get a third season of his solo series isn't clear, though Peacemaker looks set to be a big part of the DCU, whatever happens.

Batista > John. John will accept any slop. Batista is a much better actor which is why he declined this garbage.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@SteviesRightFoo - Will be interesting to see The Rock in The Smashing Machine. He got some rave reviews for his acting. I would also add that Lenny Montana may not be a household name but he turned in a great performance in The Godfather albeit in a secondary role.

@gonzor - fair. But Lenny Montana was good in the Godfather because he was actual muscle for the Colombo family. He was sent to the set to make sure Coppola was accurate and fair to the mafia and the cast & crew liked him so much that they kept him around and gave him a part.

Not because he was a wrestler turned actor.

That entire GQ interview is great…

I have always been a Cena fan since I was a kid when I started watching him at the tail end of his Doctor of Thuganomics run till now so to hear him talk about life , the WWE & his Hollywood career in a seemingly genuine manner makes me appreciate him more.

Cena may never have been the best wrestler in terms of movesets & such but the dudes mic skills have always been among the best and to see his transition from that to Hollywood leading man is ho has good comedic and dramatic chops now makes me happy to have always been his fan and not part of the “Cena Sucks” chants.

Hopefully Peacemaker gives him opportunity to do more then just action or comedy films and really broaden his range!!.

Honestly, this just proves why John Cena was the right [frick]ing pick for Peacemaker. You can see the respect he has not just for the role but for the DC Universe as a [frick]ing whole. The way he speaks about Corenswet and Superman is pure [frick]ing class. He understands the weight of playing an icon like that.

Also loved how humble he was about not being the first choice. No ego, just appreciation for the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with it. That mindset is what makes Peacemaker work and why Cena’s chemistry with Gunn has grown into something great for the [frick]ing DCU.

Peacemaker, Superman, and Man of Tomorrow feel more connected now than ever, and if Cena does show up in the sequel, it’ll be a smart [frick]ing bridge. Gunn’s building something layered, and guys like Cena are clearly invested in doing it the right [frick]ing way.

For [frick]s Sake

@THEKENDOMAN - I disagree with the "layered" DCU gunn is building, I just wasn't that impressed with superman and so far this season of peacemaker (I really liked season 1). Dont get me wrong I think corenswet was a good casting decision and Cena is great with what hes doing in peacemaker, my issues are the characterizations. This season of peacemaker just feels like last season in that he was just pretty much depressed last season because people didnt take him seriously, then he saves the world and it seemed he turned a corner but then hes put right back in the same situation this season. I know gunn didnt release the last 3 episodes for review but so far I agree with the review wilding did. Really hoping the last 3 stick the landing though. Corenswets superman was also just also off for me. Didnt like the emotional outbursts for a superman in his 30s already. Cena truly is a class act though and im hoping it all comes together

@NonPlayerC - I appreciate your [frick]ing take, and you’re not alone in having [frick]ing mixed feelings but I’d have to push back on a few [frick]ing things.

For Peacemaker, I get that it can feel like Chris is stuck in the same emotional [frick]ing loop, but I think that’s part of Gunn’s point: trauma doesn’t just get “fixed” by one heroic act. He saved the world, sure, but the deeper stuff , self-worth, identity, being taken seriously, doesn’t [frick]ing vanish overnight. That ongoing struggle actually makes him feel more human to me this [frick]ing season.

As for Superman, I agree Corenswet was a strong casting choice, but I didn’t mind the emotional outbursts. If anything, I think it made sense for a Superman who’s still finding his balance. He might look 30, but this version still feels early in his journey, not yet the stoic god figure we’re [frick]ing used to. He’s grounded, and I think Gunn is leaning into that. It’s a shift, but not necessarily a [frick]ing wrong one.

That said, I do hope the last 3 Peacemaker episodes stick the landing too. Cena’s giving it everything, and there’s definitely potential for it all to come [frick]ing full circle.

I just can't see Dave Bautista in the role, Cena brings that character to life so well. Also, Dave has already played Drax, that's one aggressively idiotic character too many.

Perfect casting. Same with Vigilante, the original choices would've been ass

Cena cannot act, he barrels through the dialogue. Gunn made a huge mistake by expanding the superman universe with a nobody, tertiary character like peacemaker. Garbage 🗑. Like others have said, reboot. Superman was barely successful. The mario movie doubled it's run. Krypto upstaged superman and that squirrel scene, pushes us back to the peacemaker shitshow. There are so many much better, Good real superheroes to use. Fire Gunn and peacemaker and reboot. I hope Warner bros gets sold to paramount or Netflix and they do just that. It's a strong posibility. Dogshit.
