As work continues on DC Studios' The People vs. Gorilla Grodd, more details about the only DCU TV series currently in active production have been revealed.
Several minor DC Comics characters are already rumoured to appear, but a few heavy-hitters are reportedly being added to the mockumentary. While there's still no mention of The Flash, former Nexus Point News reporter @ApocHorseman is reporting that the Justice Gang will return.
Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced are set to reprise their respective Superman roles as Maxwell Lord, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl in The People vs. Gorilla Grodd. They're only expected to be one-episode guest stars, and there's currently no word on whether they'll be joined by Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner.
Superman's supporting characters have already appeared in Peacemaker Season 2, and will return in next summer's Man of Tomorrow, so it's clear that Gunn has big plans and a fondness for Lord and his "gang" of heroes. Fans hope that this is all leading to the formation of the Justice League International.
During a recent interview with Collider, Jimmy Olsen actor Skyler Gisondo teased, "This show, especially, is so fun because I’ve never seen anything like it — the idea of a mockumentary set in a superhero world. I think this show is going to be a very unique angle on all of this stuff, and very unexpected in some way, and we’re having a blast."
Gisondo went on to compare the series to Primetime filmmaker Lance Oppenheim's work, saying, "Similarly to the way Lance works, because it’s this true-crime mockumentary thing. It’s a lot of verité stuff. It always feels very alive."
The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows a superintelligent ape who is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part "true" crime docuseries, the Daily Planet's Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis' most famous murder trials.
The Max Original comedy stars Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, and Superman actors Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.
The series also stars Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz. Their respective roles have not been revealed. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Yacenda set to direct all episodes. James Gunn and Peter Safran also serve as executive producers.
The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will likely premiere on HBO Max in 2027 or 2028.
