HBO Boss Confirms No DCU Series Are In Active Development Beyond The People vs. Gorilla Grodd

Despite DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn's assurances that Paradise Lost, for example, is in "extreme development," HBO boss Casey Bloys has confirmed that no DCU TV series are currently in the works.

When DC Studios was launched, Creature Commandos, Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, and Paradise Lost were all announced for HBO or HBO Max. Peacemaker Season 2 was an unexpected addition to the latter streaming platform, but three of the shows haven't panned out.

Waller has fallen by the wayside, Paradise Lost is supposedly in "extreme development," and Booster Gold has been through multiple creative teams.

It's not a complete disaster, but beyond the True Detective-inspired Lanterns, it's hard to imagine any of those shows fitting in on the same network as The Pitt and Task, for example. Now, it seems HBO has hit the pause button on James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU TV plans.

Asked by Deadline if a "reset" is taking place for DC, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys said, "You know what I would say about that? It’s the same thing with Game of Thrones. People read about development, and they assume that those are greenlit shows, and they’re development."

"And everybody knows that development is just that — you’re trying things, you take big swings, not everything comes through. I would say our track record in DC, from Watchmen to Peacemaker to Penguin and now Lanterns, is pretty good," he continued. "We’re very selective. We’re careful about what we do, nothing has changed. You’ll read about development, but focus on what we’re greenlighting."

Lanterns has been a hit, but the response to Supergirl has surely made HBO a little wary about moving forward with a show like Booster Gold. The People vs. Gorilla Grodd is probably HBO Max-bound, similar to Peacemaker and Creature Commandos, neither of which were considered a good fit for HBO itself.

For what it's worth, Bloys sounds pleased with the upcoming comedy series. Asked if there's anything else in active development, he replied, "No, not right now, obviously you’ve got Gorilla Grodd, which I’m very happy about, doing something different, and I think it’s a really fun idea. They just started shooting."

It's not just DC either. On the Game of Thrones front, the HBO executive explained that nothing set in Westeros is currently in active development. "You mean in addition to the Emmy-nominated Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is coming out in the first half of ’27? And House of the Dragon? Besides that, no, nothing else."

As of now, the DCU slate doesn't stretch any further than 2027. We have Man of Tomorrow, The People vs. Gorilla Grodd, and Creature Commandos Season 2, all of which come from Gunn.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

Between no movies in active development and now no TV shows as well, I think it's safe to say WB is seriously considering pulling the plug on this whole experiment, regardless of what happens with the merger. Man of Tomorrow will likely not only be a make or break movie for Gunn's DC, but DC in general besides Batman.

The DCU is tanking in every way, on every format.

Go woke, go broke. Marvel kind of learned the same lesson

@knomad -
Marvel currently has the highest grossing domestic movie (in the US) of all time in theaters right now with their "woke" Spider-Man that a lot of the anti-Woke-ers claimed was going to crash and burn.

And Avengers : WokesDay is probably also going to clean up at the theaters in December as well....

...soooooo......

....yeah.

@spr0cks - The wokest thing in Spider-Man was when they said energy drinks are bad for you. What are you talking about?

@SeeYouIn2036 -
I'm not the one that said it.

Apparently, Jean Grey controlling Hulk was woke or something.
And of course, ....as always.....you know they always have some heat for black MJ (Zendaya).

Anti-Woke-ers hate anything or everything that doesn't completely tickle their fancy.

@spr0cks - Everyone I've seen online has been saying that they think the reason it made a gorillian dollars was because it WASN'T woke and that it was a relief to finally just have a good superhero movie without an agenda. I think most everyone has gotten used to Zendaya being a part of this franchise after a decade, especially now since she's his wife.

I'm relatively conservative, and the only thing about that movie that I didn't really like is that nobody goes to jail at the end lol

@regmovieguy - It's been so interesting watching that term evolve over the last ten years or so. It initially meant that you had opened your eyes to the fact that the government lies and doesn't have people's best interests at heart.

This is the fault of the WGA and the dozen states that are suing Paramount over the Warner merger, thereby effectively putting WBD on hold for a year.

The amount of jobs being lost from this is insurmountable. But I guess the writers don't give two flying sex-acts.

I mean , it makes sense that Booster Gold (which was/is meant for HBO Max) is no longer in active development considering it doesn’t have a writer attached anymore since they decided not to move forward with David Jenkins’s take…

Waller we have known has been on hold and same with Paradise Lost since we got a recent report about both last month (the latter being in “extreme development” back in April according to Gunn) so this update isn’t anything new I feel.

Also why would a movie like Supergirl make them wary of a Booster Gold show , especially when Lanterns has been a hit for HBO?.

Josh if you are going to hate then atleast do proper research or be logical in it huh.

Oh and only Man of Tomorrow is from Gunn , he’s not writing Creature Commandos S2 nor is he show running The People vs Gorilla Grodd…

Yes he’s listed as producer on both but being co-head of DC studios , he will be that on all those projects!!.

This article says nothing about them putting a pause on DC shows. Just that Grodd is the only one in production at this time.

Another “nothing” article.

I think this is more HBO doesn't want to turn into the DC channel and flood the network, though they probably could have been a bit more selective than the Grodd show.

He just straight up lied and misdirected, GoT is confirmed by people on the studio and cinema on to have at least 3 spinoffs in the works Arya , snow and aegons conquest. He’s trying to downplay just how many of these developments cost only to never get made
