Lanterns Star Kyle Chandler Breaks Silence On Episode 5 Shocker: "I Could Care Less For [Spoiler]"

In last night's episode of Lanternsyou can read our spoiler breakdown here—Hal Jordan sets out to bring Rushville's Manhunter to justice by any means necessary. He's a hero, but is primarily motivated by earning the approval of the Guardians of the Universe and thereby keeping his ring.

When all is said and done, John Stewart makes the fateful decision to put a bullet in Zoe's head, killing the Manhunter. That seemingly ends the threat she poses, but did he do the right thing?

After assimililiating with those in Nebraska, Zoe has ensured that nobody gets sick. She cured William Macon's cancer and, if the hints in "Lights Out" are anything to go by, gave Sheriff Kerry her son. That means the people in Rushville owe her, and the Manhunter doesn't hesitate to murder them while attempting to deplete Hal's Green Lantern ring.

In an interview with Radio Times, Kyle Chandler stood by Hal's decision to take Zoe out. "I saw the description as not a symbiotic relationship with her in that town. I think of it more parasitically," he explained. "The only reason she's doing what she's doing is so she can keep her safety. She's still a threat and she's still a danger."

"It's like a really bad guy settling in, saying, 'Hey, I'm gonna hang out here. Don't tell anyone, and until I leave, I'll let you have free dinners,'" Chandler continued. "Once she's gone, she's not gonna care about whether [Rushville's citizens] starve or not. So I say the hell with her, and I'm glad she's gone! As a person, I love Poorna – she's great. But as a character, nah, I could care less [for Zoe]. I did my job."

Kelly Macdonald had a slightly different take, explaining that Kerry's mother-in-law, like many people, isn't necessarily "ever truly one thing or another." She added, "Zoe has really made my character a life. I think she's found a safe haven. But there was something a bit Stepford Wives about it. This little town has a bubble around it and protection. It all comes at a cost."

John Stewart actor Aaron Pierre didn't have a take on the Manhunter's fate but praised Lanterns for leaving her ending open to interpretation.

"At no point do you ever feel as though you're being lectured," he shared. "You feel like you're being invited to have a conversation as an audience member, and I think that's where the best moments exist."

The latest episode of Lanterns established that the Manhunter is programmed to force her way into a society and find ways to bring them under her control. That's exactly what happened in Rushville, and Zoe only seduced John to win him over (remember, she happily allowed him to burn so he'd agree to serve her in exchange for being healed).

So, with that in mind, Hal's motivations aside, it seems fair to say that he was right to want to take her out. John obviously realised that, too, even if he and Hal had a different way of going about it.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Four episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

Chandler/Hal are right as usual.

Zoe essentially ran a protection racket in the town and only Hal and John could see that and were willing to fight it.

Hal was absolutely right: she would waste people in the town and did. She was also willing to kill John Stewart WITH Hal Jordan when she fired the lasers at the motel at the end, which hopefully let John break free of any manipulation by her that he was under so he could snipe her proper.

Remember when Manhunters were just killer robots and not whatever the [frick] Zoe was supposed to be?

@soberchimera - Wait, they weren't programmed to have sex with people and to take on the form of a minority because it helps them better assimilate in the comics? Nah, that can't be true.

@lazlodaytona - Yes, making the Manhunter into an “ethically non-monogamous” grandmother was a massive improvement from the source material.

@JoshWilding - In the Milleninial mini-series they were shown taking over people and living among us as all sorts for years.

@Nomis929 - funny how the comic accuracy purists just mute up when you show them a thing they’re complaining about actually exists in a comic

@Nomis929 - I'm not disputing that. And I know the answer to this, but were sex and race their primary weapon? The former was an eye-roll for me, and the latter was another heavy-handed example of trying to recapture what Watchmen did. Seeing as the writer of this week's episode said he'd never heard of Green Lantern before being hired for the show, I'm guessing most of the team on this one has as much reverence for the source material as Bryan Singer. They're chasing Emmys.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - @Nomis929 - Funny how they’re shapeshifting abilities haven’t been referenced in the comics in 30+ years. Maybe because Millenium wasn’t a groundbreaking series and literally no one brings it up as an essential DC crossover event like Crisis on Infinite Earths, Blackest Night, or Flashpoint. Maybe making the Manhunters being discount Skrulls wasn’t a popular idea that stuck like John accidentally destroying an entire planet and killing billions was.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - LOL! Well...as someone who has been accused of being a "comic accuracy purists" on here before, I've learn that you have to take these live action interpretations in tv and movies as what they are...interpretations. As long as they have a core relation to the source material I'm cool with it for the most part.

I just post stuff that I know that from the comics to show there is some basis for why the interpretations may go a certian way.

@JoshWilding - Ugh....Pleas don't use the "BS" word in repsonse to me * Bryan Singer*. What he did to the X-men and comic book movies is unforgivable.

But I see what you are saying, I was just showing those panels from the comics as creating personal relationships with humans is something they did use to infliterate communites.
Nomis929
Nomis929 - 9/14/2026, 11:38 AM
@soberchimera - No, it didn't sell that well, although I do remember it being heavily promoted as the next big "crisis' back in the day.

But technically it is part of the lore.

@Nomis929 - Believe me, I hate even mentioning that...man. Ugh. But yeah, you're not wrong and no shade to you whatsoever. I think they got it half right with this approach to the Manhunters, but I'm not feeling the writing on this series at all, a surprise as I'm one of the few huge Tom King fans out there. Literally had his Batman Vol. 2 Omnibus arrive today.

@soberchimera - ok so are they supposed to be limited to arbitrary number of comics that you guys all know or can they pull from whatever ? What’s the rules here ?
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 9/14/2026, 11:41 AM
@Nomis929 - nah I get it , and people need to recognize that more these aren’t intended to be 1:1 versions of the comics or There’s no point of them existing , it’s a take in a different medium, people understand elseworlds in comics but somehow won’t apply that thinking to tv and film
Nomis929
Nomis929 - 9/14/2026, 11:43 AM
@JoshWilding - Tom King was certainly a divisive writer during his stint on Batman.

I fall somewhere in the middle with him myself. Some stuff I thought was really clever... the other left me scratching my head.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/14/2026, 11:45 AM
@Nomis929 - So is John destroying an entire planet, but how often is THAT referenced or still considered a distinctive part of his character history?
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/14/2026, 11:49 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Because the comics we all know are the ones that are liked and actually sold well, so maybe using obscure crossover mini-series that no one remembers fondly or even at all isn’t the best foundation for your multi-million dollar superhero show. And let’s be honest, making the Manhunter a human woman was a cost-saving measure rather than trying to be faithful to the comics.
Nomis929
Nomis929 - 9/14/2026, 11:52 AM
@soberchimera - Well, I mean...it did happen in the comics (Cosmic Odessey # 2)in his failure to stop the destruction of Xanshi .

And he was going to kill himself over it...

But it is a lot of comic readers that are stil familiar with this chapter of the character. But with all these RETCONS over the years, who know if it will eventually be address in the show.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 9/14/2026, 11:59 AM
@Nomis929 - My point is no one really thinks of John as a planet-killer nowadays the same way Manhunters aren’t thought of as shapeshifters.

The show is great but I simply can’t reconcile how can the guardians pick John, allowed him to leave and then either hand the ring over to Gardner or allowed the ring to choose him. If Jordan was apparently such a big threat with his recklessness at a later age what about Gardner ?? The guy intervened in an international conflict and murdered dozens of people yet they’re okay with him?

@ClarkJoeKent - I was waiting for Hal to punch John with a big green fist in the fight at the end, but he exhausted the only energy left in the ring to protect them from the blast.

The biggest flaw from this show, is that it invests so much into the mystery but leaves so much unexplored ideas and treats all the space stuff as either something you can make up with your mind, or treats it as a continuing story from an unofficial Hal Jordan sequel that only exists in DC Studios mindset.

Like Manhunters? What are they? They're alien, but what is they're "alien" look? Aren't they bots? Okay what about ANTAAN...who is he? A Sabiaman from DBZ? What alien? Why does he have beef with the Lanterns and Manhunters? Is he a Manhunter? It's all glossed over in favor of this mystery which I feel is going to harm it in the long run. While I liked last night's episode, was just a tad disappointing how it all unfolded.

Also got random MOS Smallville fight vibes.

I tend to agree - with good 'ole Hal. BUT generally the casting for non leads...is not great. The show started good, but is starting to wear on me. Glad they killed the short bald dude. Oops (spoiler) I think the son is the miracle the sheriff talked about and why she's beholden, not just her taking care of the Gotham gang. I'd like some new constructs other than bubbles and shields. Just saying seems like all the green CGI budget went into the bottle opener, and shitty green goggles in the helicopter sequence. I'M TRYING TO LIKE THIS SHOW...I WANT TO DO BADDLY but the more I think about it, it's just not doing it.
