Spider-Noir was cancelled after one season on Amazon's Prime Video streaming platform, but at the time, it was reported that Sony was developing multiple Spider-Man-related projects. At least one was said to be nearing a series order.
Since then, we've heard that four different scripts are in play, with the hope being that at least one or two eventually become a reality. Sony and Amazon have turned to some impressive writing talent, as Kelvin Yu (American Born Chinese), Alison Tatlock (Better Call Saul), Ben Nedivi & Matt Wolpert (For All Mankind), and Megan McDonnell (WandaVision) are all in the midst of developing these mystery Marvel projects.
Now, The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez has taken to social media to suggest that Spider-Punk and Silk are at least two of the characters being lined up for their own series.
The latter isn't hugely surprising as Amazon was previously developing Silk: Spider Society. Developed by Angela Kang (The Walking Dead), it was set to revolve around a version of Cindy Moon who spent [time] abroad doing field research in remote isolation before returning home to discover her family had disappeared.
Her main motivation would be to find them, while also dealing with her over-developed sense of empathy that forces her to strongly feel the emotions of everyone around her.
As for Spider-Punk, there have been rumours about him getting his own animated movie after stealing the show in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. A pivot to a live-action series makes sense, similar to what happened with Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man Noir.
In the comics, Hobie Brown is a homeless teenager transformed by a spider that was irradiated by toxic waste dumped by President Norman Osborn. He goes on to become this punk rock-inspired Spider-Man, leading the downtrodden people of New York against Osborn's V.E.N.O.M. troops.
Nothing is confirmed as we write this, and it is just a rumour. Still, while some fans were mixed on Spider-Noir, it received rave reviews and won five Emmys, so Sony and Amazon are bound to want to replicate that success (while hopefully finding a larger audience this time).
On the big screen, Sony has abandoned plans for Spider-Man spin-off movies. CEO Tom Rothman said last month, "Ultimately, the audience wasn’t satisfied enough with [Sony’s Spider-Man spin-offs]. Whether that’s a fair assessment of those movies, who knows. That’s howling into the wind. The audience is the boss, and they didn’t respond. It’s as simple as that."
"Right now, we don’t know. We never looked at it as the 'Sony-Marvel Universe,'" he continued. "We looked at if there were worthwhile movies to make with other characters. At the moment, there are none in active development."
