Earlier this year, the massive box office success of the latest Avatar movie propelled star Zoe Saldaña past Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing movie star of all time (Saldaña’s cumulative global box office total now sits at approximately $15.46 billion, just topping Johansson’s $15.4 billion).
Unfortunately, Saldaña's reign as queen of the box office was short-lived, as another MCU actor has now claimed the crown.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day now just $7.89M away from becoming the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, Tom Holland has officially become the world's highest-grossing actor, with his theatrical releases now accumulating $15.5 billion.
Holland reportedly earned a $20 million upfront salary for BND, with backend bonuses that could bring his total to over $100 million.
Brand New Day, the other solo Spider-Man movies, and the team-based MCU films Holland has appeared in were obviously the main contributors, but Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey - which has now become Universal Pictures' highest-grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office with $1.684 billion - certainly played its part.
At 30, Holland is the youngest actor ever to reach the top of this list, breaking into an elite group that has traditionally been dominated by performers with decades of blockbuster experience.
Following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins a brand new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult and living alone after erasing himself and the memories of him from those he loves. In a New York that no longer knows his name, he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to protecting his city as Spider-Man full-time.
But as the demands on him grow, he is put under increasing pressure. This triggers an unexpected physical change that threatens his existence, while a strange wave of crime emerges - and gives rise to one of the most dangerous threats he has ever faced.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.
