It's been a long three-year wait for Star Wars fans eager to see Ahsoka Tano's story continue in Disney+'s Ahsoka. When we last saw the Jedi, she was trapped on Peridea alongside her new apprentice, Sabine Wren.
Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger both returned to the main Star Wars Galaxy, setting the stage for war between the New Republic and a version of the Empire backed by the might of the supernatural Nightsisters.
Back to Ahsoka, and while Anakin Skywalker's Force Ghost will be on hand to guide her, the race is on with Dark Jedi Baylan Skoll to discover the secret at the heart of Peridea. In the closing moments of Season 1, statues of the Mortis Gods—living embodiments of the balance of the Force—were revealed, leading to theories that Abeloth (a.k.a. The Mother) is coming.
The main three Mortis Gods previously appeared in a lore-heavy episode of The Clone Wars, and while statues of The Father (who represents the balance between the light and dark sides of the Force) and The Son (the Dark) stood tall in Ahsoka, The Daughter's (the Light) had crumbled. It could be indicative of what's happened in the wider Galaxy...or there may be an even deeper meaning we've yet to unravel.
In an interview with Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com), Filoni, now Lucasfilm co-President, confirmed the Mortis Gods are "definitely a thing" in Ahsoka Season 2.
He added, "What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not? And what is the danger if it’s real? And how are you going to prioritise your goals here? What would a Jedi do, versus what would a regular person do? Those things come up through the course of the season."
Filoni was reportedly insistent that fans don't need to watch The Clone Wars first, but it certainly feels like he's tying some loose ends together while deepening the Star Wars mythos in a way that could redefine what we know about the Force.
"It’s a challenge, I can tell you," he said of tackling such big concepts. "It was so surprising when George [Lucas] created these archetype god characters. What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it's a natural story path to get into these questions."
Season 2 continues the story of Ahsoka Tano and her extraordinary journey beyond the known galaxy. As Ahsoka and her Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren travel across a mysterious and perilous world to find their way home, their friends Hera, Ezra, Zeb, and Chopper must face the powerful Grand Admiral Thrawn and his sinister allies, who seek to plunge the New Republic into war.
Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lars Mikkelsen, Eman Esfandi, Ivanna Sakhno, Rory McCann, and Hayden Christensen.
The directors are Dave Filoni, Jennifer Getzinger, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anders Engström. The series is written by Dave Filoni, who also serves as an executive producer along with Jon Favreau and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist is the co-executive producer, and John Bartnicki and Joan Schneider are the producers.
Ahsoka Season 2 premieres on January 20 on Disney+.
