When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC, it was 100% meant to be part of the MCU. Following a rocky start, The Avengers spin-off found its footing in the second half of Season 1, excelling with a storyline closely linked to the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
However, as the years flew by, the series became further removed from what's since been dubbed the "Sacred Timeline." We've since learned that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige didn't want any Marvel Television shows; they were the doing of former Marvel Entertainment Chairman Ike Perlmutter.
After years of clashes, when the opportunity presented itself, Feige talked now-former Disney CEO Bob Iger into allowing Marvel Studios to oversee everything by producing MCU-set TV shows for Disney+.
The canon status of both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter has been hotly debated for years. Many argue that they're clearly part of the MCU, an argument which carries a little more weight now that the "Defenders Saga" appears to have been folded into the Sacred Timeline. Even ComicBookMovie.com owner Nate Best weighed in on that this past weekend.
Chloe Bennet was introduced in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a newly created character called Skye. However, we eventually learned—in a very convoluted fashion—that she was, in fact, Daisy Johnson. As an Inhuman, "Skye" eventually gained superpowers and, like her comic book counterpart, became Quake.
In an interview with Elle, Bennet was asked about potentially reprising the role and said, "Totally. I’m obsessed with Daisy. I feel like I am Daisy. I would be so protective of her."
She continued, "I’m still low-key angry that they don’t fully acknowledge this as canon—the real followers will understand that. We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes."
"We spent a lot of time in people’s homes, and I spent a lot of my life playing this character and this young woman growing into her power," Bennet explained. "There’s a lot of symbolism in that, especially looking back now. I would love to play her with the growth that I’ve had since I’ve had a break from the role."
Bennet really shone as that iteration of the character and is someone fans are very keen to see in the MCU. While changes would have to be made to Daisy (we're guessing she'd be a mutant rather than an Inhuman), Quake would be a terrific addition to many franchises.
Will it happen? And if so, should we expect Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to become official MCU canon? That remains to be seen.
