Emilia Clarke Was "Absolutely Livid" About Game Of Thrones Finale; Responds To Secret Invasion Backlash

In a new interview, Emilia Clarke reflects on some of the projects she's been involved with over the years that received less-than-positive feedback from fans...

Emilia Clarke has addressed the negative responses to several of her big and small-screen projects, including Marvel's Secret Invasion, Terminator Genisys, and Game of Thrones.

Though the final season of HBO's fantasy drama series does have its share of defenders, it was widely viewed as a disappointing swansong for the mega-popular show. The final two episodes, in particular, came in for a lot of backlash thanks to some highly controversial creative decisions, one of which saw fan-favorite Daenerys Targaryen (Clarke) "break bad" by laying waste to King's Landing and the thousands of innocent people who lived there just so she could take her revenge on Cersi Lannister (Lena Headey).

Then, in the series finale, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) killed his lover/aunt when he realised that she'd succumbed to madness.

During an in-depth interview with Variety, Clarke admits to being "absolutely livid" about her character's fate, but there was very little she could do about it.

“Aside from what I brought as an actor, I didn’t have any creative input, nor did I want any."

Clarke goes on to describe showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as "geniuses," but also very “fastidious about us saying the lines exactly as they’ve written them.”

“I was given the seasons, and I, to the best of my ability, empathized and understood and tracked every choice she made so it felt like mine,” she says. “I felt like that was what my job was.”

Clarke's role in GOT required a lot of nudity and some pretty full-on sex scenes. The actress says she didn't experience any "bad stuff" while working on the show, but has “experienced lack of care on other jobs, which I think could have been prevented with some consideration.”

“I don’t want to specifically say,” she responds when probed for more details. “There’s just been a number of occasions where I’ve been like, ‘This ain’t right.’ And again, it’s not through someone abusing power; it’s through lack of thinking and care.”

As for Secret Invasion, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Terminator: Genisys:

"I don’t think no one liked that show, guys. I’m sorry!” she says in a goofy voice. “Star Wars? They didn’t like it. Terminator? That should never have happened. But these were jobs I said yes to, you know what I mean? I entered into already existing franchises, so when they don’t work out, it’s not personal.”

Secret Invasion proved to be one of Marvel Studios' more divisive Disney+ shows, and it's probably fair to say that even staunch defenders of the bleak sci-fi thriller were let down by the season finale.

One of the more lambasted aspects of the episode was the climactic battle between the villainous Gravik and Talos' daughter G'iah (Clarke), who powered up to become a hugely formidable "Super Skrull," displaying the abilities of various other MCU heroes.

At the end of the finale, G'iah is recruited by senior MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth, which would seem to suggest that there are (or were) plans for the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe down the line. A rumor did the rounds that G'iah will actually return as the leader of her own team of British-based heroes back in 2023, but we haven't heard anything about her MCU future since.

@Wahhvacado - She did a great job in GOT (all the more considering what she was going through health wise) but it should have been Jon Snow in the Iron Throne in the end. He was an amazing warrior, a natural leader, he had Tygarian blood, and most of all, he didn’t want the power which is exactly what makes a good ruler. In trying to circumvent expectations, they failed to satisfy any and ended a great show on a low note.

Honestly , I haven’t seen Genisys so i can’t comment on that but Solo and Secret Invasion (aside from the weak finale) aren’t as bad as some say imo….

I wouldn’t mind seeing her as Qi’ra again in a SW project given she becomes the leader of Crimson Dawn at the end of Solo (it’s a slim possibility but maybe she can voice the character in Maul:Shadow Lord if it gets to that point in the timeline).

Also as long as they depower G’iah or say the effects of her Super Skrull abilities weren’t permenant then I wouldn’t mind seeing the character again either since I thought she was fine otherwise…

Plus , the deal she made with Sonya Falsworth of helping protect Skrull’s in exchange for their services was intriguing and I would like to see where that goes though I’m likely the only one lol!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Solo wasn't bad at all. It was just straight up a good movie with lots of baggage and bad timing.

@Clintthahamster - yeah , that probably is the best way to to put it…

I think it was ok but the biggest issue I feel was them cramming all his big things into one film such as The Kessel Run , getting his blaster & ship etc.

Solo was beyond horrible. Secret Wars was a totally limp let down. Neither thing could have been saved by one young actress. Those are not her fault.

Though a lot of people were let down by the GoT ending, I liked it. So there.

And Emilia is still hot. Yum!

@DocSpock - And the less said about Genesiys the better. It's just unfortunate for her resume that they were all back to back bombs.

@DocSpock - I enjoyed Solo but it had two major problems. One, we all already know what a young Han is like because we pretty much saw that in the first SW and Ford’s earlier work shows what he looks like younger (and that guy ain’t it). And two, the sequel trilogy destroyed the character, making everything he did in the OT a wasted failure and destroying all his his character growth. What’s the point of watching his early adventures if he’s going to ultimately go back to becoming a complete failure, a deadbeat dad, and a selfish scoundrel who is killed by his kid?

@captainwalker - About the price of gas? Or the $42 trillion in debt we have?
Or the increase of widespread degeneracy and collapse of western civilzation?

Nope, let's focus on a tv show.

She's a telaneted actress, but man she's really had no luck with the projects she's picked over the years. I hear that show Ponies is good but I haven't watched yet.

@MarkCassidy - Lol I just made a similar comment! But how's she supposed to know, the IPs and the studio behind those projects were huge, normally that would lead to success. Still young though and she can do both drama and comedy.

@MarkCassidy - I mean she should have fired her agent after Terminator, and she agreed to do Star Wars and Marvel projects when those were still perceived to be guaranteed hits within the industry, now everyone knows better.

@MarkCassidy - They seemingly used her star power to boost sales for products that they knew were trash.

No star us bigger than a bad script. I am not sure Hollywood will ever learn that lesson.

She's great, but Secret Invasion is one of the biggest mistakes the MCU has made. The lore and universe expansion aspect of that show completely falls apart and [frick]s up a lot more than it helps.

She's in some projects that aren't good, but she's always good in them. She can only do so much with the material she's given.

At the end of the day , most actors just have to follow the direction they are given.
