Mister Miracle: The Actors Playing Scott Free And Big Barda Have Just Been Revealed

DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran seems to have accidentally let slip who's playing the leads in Mister Miracle in a new interview about the future of the DCU.

Skydance and Paramount Global officially completed their merger on August 7, 2025, and just over a year later, that new creation has now essentially acquired Warner Bros.

However, as part of a federal and state antitrust settlement, Paramount Skydance will be required to operate Warner Bros. as a separate entity for five years.

Once those 5 years are up, no one can really say with 100% certainty what will happen to Warner Bros., let alone its sub-studios like DC Studios and New Line Cinema.

DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran recently sat down for a chat with IGN to address concerns about the future of DC Studios, but in that conversation, he let slip that the two main leads for the upcoming Mister Miracle animated TV series have already been cast.

Per Safran, Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games, Five Nights at Freddy's) is playing Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven, Blade Runner 2049) is portraying Big Barda.

Safran specifically revealed, "I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns and he adapted his book Mr. Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it's just dynamite. Josh Hutcherson as Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda. And I just think it's a book that I've always loved and I remember Tom telling us early on that, every convention he goes to, at least a couple people come up to him and say this book saved my life and I love that we got to tell that story over eight episodes. "

Nearly 15 years after losing the role of Spider-Man to Andrew Garfield, Josh Hutcherson finally gets to play a superhero.

James Gunn previously confirmed on social media that the new animated series is officially part of the core DCU canon. That means everything fans see, from Darkseid to Apokolips and New Genesis, will directly shape the bigger storyline moving forward.

Tom King, who wrote the Eisner-winning comic book series that the show will draw inspiration from, wrote all of the episodes (8 in total). He is also the showrunner.

Back in December, King revealed that he was animating the series, so it seems the animated show is the furthest along out of all the in-development DCU projects and might be the first thing to be released after Man of Tomorrow.

King was also heavily involved with Lanters, serving as co-creator, writer, and executive producer.

The official logline for the series reads, "No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself?"

"Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father Darkseid seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation — the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe."

Love the height on Mackenzie. The Wonder Woman actress needs to be of similar height.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - Goes perfect with the 'lack of height' on Hutcherson.

@MarkJulian - Yes, Mr. miracle is supposed to be shorter than Big Barda, but he’s not supposed to be short. I guess they had to do that because there aren’t many 7 foot tall actresses but he’s usually depicted as 6 feet tall.

Top tier casting, cannot wait to see big barda in live action at last

@Gambito -

Casting in the DCU has been solid. A lot of numbskulls on here sleeping on it. Regardless of the film, milly and Momoa are excellent casting, along with everyone in Superman and Lanterns even if you wanted Hal younger. These guys are cooking.

@PS118 - Just because the casting is good (Even this is debatable for some things), does not mean the projects are good

If true. Could be cool to see them in live action.

Good casting. Davis was especially good on Station Eleven.

Glad to see Apocalypse and New Genesis are already taking shape in the DCU. Some of my favorite mythology in DC lore.

Sounds like this show is in good hands. Looking forward to it.

For about a decade now (almost exactly to the day, holy shit, time flies), every time I see Mackenzie Davis, there's this one song that starts playing in my head:

Thats actually really good casting. Josh is my height so it'll look good with a 5'11 woman. Both are good actors, I'm excited.

FYI, not the first superhero Hutcherson's played. He voiced the title character in the English dub of Netflix's Ultraman anime from a while back.

@FlixMentallo21 - cool!!

He was also the voice of Van-El in Justice League Unlimited who was Superman’s imaginary son in their adaptation of “The Man Who Has Everything”

Sounds good imo!!.

Josh Hutcherson & Mackenzie Davis would not have been my first picks for Scott Free as well as Big Barda but I can definitely see both pull off those characters…

Josh especially can play the anxious and reluctant hero nature of Mister Miracle well while Davis can bring Barda’s resilience , toughness yet love & protectiveness for Scott to life.

Hopefully we learn who is playing Orion & Darkseid amongst others though looking forward to the show regardless!!.

The older Josh gets, the more I think he looks like James Caan.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Thank God it's animated. I'm so tired of these properties being watered down because of the limitations of live action

When does this come out?

Would be amazing if Michael Ironside voices Darkseid.

Casting seems pretty good, but tbh, I'd rather not have Tom King anywhere near any more DC projects moving forward.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/15/2026, 1:03 AM
@ThouBear8 - that’s understandable given how much of his work tends to focus more on the psychological impact of heroism , trauma & guilt whilst also grounding characters to an extent that the superpowers & superhero trappings are pushed to the background.

Plus he’s very much a deconstructionist while the DCU might need something more traditional heroic atleast right now regardless of how much I enjoyed Lanterns personally.

He’s definitely a controversial and divisive writer so I can understand if his style wouldn’t be for everyone.
