X-MEN: AGE OF REVELATION INFINITY Writer Leaves X Following Release Of Controversial Magik Comic

Marvel Comics' X-Men: Age of Revelation Infinity #4 has caused quite a stir on social media, and the comic's writer, Tim Seeley, has left X after being accused of depicting Magik being sexually abused.

X-Men: Age of Revelation Infinity #4 was released yesterday, and it's sent social media into a frenzy. In the comic—which is set in a possible future—Magik loses control and kills Maria Hill; Nick Fury then kills her, sending Illyana Rasputin's soul to Limbo, where the demon Belasco claims her soul.

She's tormented and abused by Belasco and the other demons in Limbo, which ultimately corrupts Illyana and leads to her becoming their servant. That doesn't sound too bad, right?

Well, there are sexual undertones in the comic that imply the demons have sexually abused Magik. X-Men: Age of Revelation Infinity #4 doesn't depict rape, but demeaning remarks are made about her body, and two of the hero's tormenters, Belasco and S'ym, were previously revealed to have abused Magik as a child.

When Magik arrives in Limbo, she's in her underwear, and as Darkchild, she thanks her abuser—in an admittedly sexualised pose—for "sating [her] pathetic needs." While some read that as a reference to sexual assault, Belasco is actually making her beg for food.

Sexual assault has frequently been used as a plot device for female characters in comics, so it's easy enough to understand the outrage. It may not have been the intention here, but the issue can be read in that way, and therein lies the problem.

The backlash was so vocal that writer Tim Seeley, who faced abuse and death threats (which is obviously unacceptable), has deactivated his X account and gone private on Instagram. On Bluesky, he wrote, "Welp...I had to finally deactivate twitter because that was just a touch too much death for me and the family. It was a sh*t 16 year run! F**k everybody!"

Marvel Comics hasn't addressed the backlash, and X-Men: Age of Revelation Infinity #4 remains available to read on Marvel Unlimited.

You can see some of the panels causing controversy in the X post below.

Perdition Lost Part 1. Magik is sent on a rescue mission to liberate mutant Fabian Cortez from S.H.I.E.L.D., but does her demonic side have the same goal?

How is this a movie?

@WhatIfRickJames - It ISN'T but it IS a comicbook thus fits perfectly fine on any site about comicbooks even if mostly about movie adaptions. The site has ALWAYS discussed Marvel and DC comics etc and NOT just films based on them, even prior to adding subsections/sister sites for Horror, WWE, Action films/TV, SciFi fantasy etc. If nothing else we ARE getting rebooted Xmen added into the MCU after Secret Wars thus any current runs of Marvel comics COULD inform what and where they MAY go with in regard to the new 616 mutants after all (tho doubt they'd included anything from this run in the film franchise).

What's the problem here?

It's a comic. No laws were broken.

It depicts literal demons doing demon shit.

Once again, why is this a reason to harass a writer?

@MaximusTheMad - I'd say the problem is only toxic idiots thinking it's OK to send death threats online, dunno if these comics are good or not but even if there was undertones of rape within it that aint anything new to Marvel comics and as you say demons doing demon shit shouldn't be THAT shocking. That said, any comic aimed towards kids that covers topics such as rape is always going to get some pushback just as it did back in the day with the whole rape of Carol Danvers storyline but there is a big divide between someone saying a storyline is inappropriate for kids (some think if not explicit we shouldn't shelter youth from such things, others strongly oppose even any implied mention in narratives prior to at least age on consent) and sending death threats to the author.

@Apophis71 - agreed. I think there should be space for more mature plots in comics. The people who grew up with comics are now in their 30s to 60s. They want mature stories that reflect the realities of the world

Mr fantastic being abusive to his wife. Namor creeping on invisible woman. Magik getting demonically raped. Wolverine getting his skin peeled off for the 50th time. Winter soldier killing innocents. That is awesome. Its why comics like Spawn worked. Why can't modern marvel have it? Just make sure its marketed to the right audience. But yea I agree with you there's nuance here

@MaximusTheMad - it’s not a reason to harass a writer, these people should be ashamed of themselves. But so should the writer. This feels like a case of “the writer’s barely disguised fetish”

Termin8r - 11/26/2025, 8:36 AM
@Vigor - not bad points. But it’s not so nuanced when it’s beautiful women getting degraded and violated. Imagine the furor if one of the boys got demonically raped. Let’s not pretend everyone in the comments section would be so forgiving and understanding.

You cannot draw women in this pose without people freaking out.
Look at the SPIDER-WOMAN cover controversy a few years back!
Same basic pose.
Spider-MAN can be in that pose all day long and nothing... no outrage... put a woman in that pose and :BOOM:!

Did I see different panels than those who are complaining? Other than being in her underwear, which covers her up better than most female heroes actual suits, I don't see any sexual undertones... The last panel is supposedly a sexual pose? Really?! I never would have thought that if I hadn't read it here first.

The dystopian-future X-Men event has Magik falling into an godawful demonic situation that vibes with her origin and powers?
Some fans: "Inconceivable!"

The X-Men are all going through really bad times here, Magik's just involves demons because her powers lead to a hell dimension (just like Nightcrawler's), and demons will do awful demon things to people.
Apophis71

@1stDalek - and as I say, isn't exactly the first time, or indeed the first time of negative reactions to implied exploitation of females in comics and some are trying to paint this as partisan.

I mean almost every other time there was any form of protest of risqué stuff with female characters it tended to be more the right wing bible bashing crowd being blamed for shouting about it (and NOT saying it ever was specifically one side or another, religious or not). I mean go WAY back to early Wonder Woman and it going all the way to the House cos of implied BDSM and perceived excess sexualisation ultimately resulting in the comics code authority in the 50's (which technically only became fully defunct in 2011, even if it started becoming far less strict and closely adhered to long before that) or a couple decades later the reactions to the rape of Carol Danvers.

There will ALWAYS be times of characters falling into the grasps of demons/demonic types, every decade has some both male and/or female heroes the victims of it. There will oft be forced servitude of one kind of another such as when Gambit was in the clutches of a child slave trader first time he used his abilities in public. There will ALSO oft be negative reactions to such thing, the ONLY major difference now to a couple decades ago is the shield of anonymity and ease of messaging the internet provides meaning MORE hate of GREATER extremes faster and more often and NOTHING partisan about it, strong feelings on topics of rape both sides of the aisle regardless if that IS what this strip is implying in the views of some.

On the face of it I DON'T see a huge issue covering this sort of thing in comics, depending on how it is handled and the outcome of it. As in if the comic makes out bad things happening to a character IS bad and eventually the hero overcomes that bad/is saved it need not be any more a problem than doing hero becomes a violent drunk for a while and redeems themselves or abuses a drug of one kind or another and comes out OK at the end of it with a strong message to readers that drugs and alcohol abuse are BAD. It only becomes a potential problem IF it is for too graphic for young readers without suitable warnings/sales restrictions so that parents are easily able to judge if they feel their kid is mature enough for such things without assuming it is PG and don't need to CHECK first if suitable.

Magik's Limbo is a kind of Hell. These are demons. People were okay with her being violently abused but not sexually abused?!
It's a comic. About bad things happening. Tim Seeley didn't [frick]ing rape anyone.

Whiny, sensitive, censoring little twitter bitches.

These are the same people who went cuckoo over Batman's dick wangling about in the shadows of the batcave a non-gratuitous moment in an adult comic.

[frick] every single person who sends death threats to a real human being for maybe implying rape from fictional comic demons to a fictional comic book character.

Watch a movie instead.
How about The Excorcist?
"Your mother sucks cocks in hell."
Anybody remember that quote from a devil-possessed child?

Now that was a good movie.
