OBI-WAN KENOBI Writer Joby Harold Weighs In On The Grand Inquisitor's Unexpected Fate - SPOILERS

At the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi's second episode, Reva decided not to share the credit for capturing the titular Jedi Master and plunged her lightsaber through The Grand Inquisitor's stomach. Considering a similar injury killed Qui-Gon Jinn once upon a time, fans understandably assumed that the villain was done for.

This would contradict what we saw in Star Wars Rebels, as the animated series (which is set after this show) depicted The Grand Inquisitor's demise when he chose death over facing Darth Vader's wrath. So, has Obi-Wan Kenobi broken canon?

Here's an excerpt from Vanity Fair's recent interview (via SFFGazette.com) with Head Writer Joby Harold:

In Episode Two, Reva drives her lightsaber into her superior, the Grand Inquisitor. Yet we saw him meet his end a different way in the animated Rebels show. Is there a break in canon there?

As you know, we would never break canon. So, that's all I'll say. [Laughs.] Canon is everything

So fans should wait to see where that's going before judging it as a mistake or a retcon?

I can't speak to it beyond that. We all know where we're going in the show [from previous films and TV shows] so anytime you can undercut that, pull the rug on that, have a reversal...

In other words, it sounds like this was, as expected, a deliberate misdirect to get fans talking. Taking The Grand Inquisitor off the table allows Reva to shine, and we're sure that the villain will make a surprise return after managing to survive his injury. Plus, it's worth noting that no one has actually said he's dead...at least not outright!

What did you think about Obi-Wan Kenobi's Grand Inquisitor twist?

@bobevanz - Everyone with a brain was capable of figuring out that he wasn't really dead since we know he'll survive to Rebels. That's not "subverting expectations", that's expecting you to be smart enough to get that on your own. But yeah, I guess that was a mistake.

I tire of bad writers inserting obscure twists or shocking moments for no reason just to undo them a few episodes later.

See also Luke Skywalker returning in The Mandalorian and taking Grogu only to undo that and make it meaningless a few episodes into Boba Fett.
