The Mandalorian and Grogu is now playing in theatres, and Thursday preview numbers are in.

Deadline reports that TMAG took in around $12 million at the domestic box office last night. Not a bad start in a vacuum, but for the first big-screen Star Wars adventure in 7 years? For context, this is slightly less than the Thursday takings of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which made $14.1 million back in 2018.

As things stand, the movie looks set for an $80M-$100M 4-day Memorial Weekend haul, with worldwide estimates at around $160 million.

On the plus side, The Mandalorian and Grogu is holding steady at 61% (88% Audience Score) on Rotten Tomatoes after initially generating a "Rotten" 59% score.

Reviews don't tend to influence ticket sales too much - especially for a major tentpole like this - but RT is a very popular site, and that green splat can make a difference in the minds of prospective moviegoers.

Do you plan on seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

Jon Favreau directs and produces the feature spin-off, with Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni also serving as producers.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," Favreau said of directing his first Star Wars movie in a previous statement. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

Kennedy added, "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen."

Alien icon Sigourney Weaver is also on board as Ward, a colonel and leader of the New Republic's Adelphi Rangers who previously served as a pilot for the Rebel Alliance. The Clone Wars bounty hunter, Embo, is believed to be the main villain.

Favreau was asked why these characters were chosen to be the focus of the next Star Wars movie during an interview with Total Film.

"I'm not sure what, exactly, why we were asked to do this. I suspect it was because these are characters that people, even who hadn't seen Star Wars, may be aware of, especially Grogu. Baby Yoda was everywhere. And these are two characters that were used to launch Disney Plus, and we made no assumptions when the Mandalorian TV show came on that anybody had seen any Star Wars before. But we also wanted to make it feel authentic to Star Wars, and so the world that we created as the backdrop and the way the characters present themselves were embraced by Star Wars fans, which I really appreciate.

But it also was an inroad for people who may not have ever watched Star Wars on television, and here we are now, seven years after the last film. I think there's an opportunity to present Star Wars to a new audience using these characters as well."

@vectorsigma - I’ve already seen it on sites like Variety where they said box office doesn’t matter because the brand sells toys.

It was soooooo good. Seriously, just fun pulpy and completely self-contained. Also, the SCORE was KILLER and permeated every moment of the film. Do not sleep on this one, for real.

I get the comparison to Solo but I feel there’s a lot of nuance or context missing by doing so honestly…

Solo was the 4th SW film under Disney after TFA ,RO & TLJ had already come out with a recast Han Solo amongst other things being factors to its low performance while The Mandalorian & Grogu is a movie spinoff of a streaming show that started in 2019 which is the same year the last SW film till now was released in TROS after which there was a pandemic that changed lives & the industry while also leading to various streaming projects such as 9 seasons overall of live action SW tv shows etc.

The reason I say all that is to show that the landscape has changed drastically post Co-vid for SW where it became a tv franchise (hell there are kids who were born and grew up with SW as just tv shows) so it’s gonna take a bit to build it back up on the big screen so anyone expecting the franchise to just start breaking records left & right with one film is being an idiot.

Anyway unfortunately , not sure if I’m gonna be able to check the film out this weekend but hope to do so very soon since it does it look fun!!.

My MAIN ISSUE as a 58 year old OG SW fan who stood in line in Manhattan when New Hope came out in 1977 is that I spend GOOD MONEY going to the movie theater with my grand kids now to see a feature that's NOT on TV. I've already SEEN 3 seasons the Adventures Of the Adventures MANDILORIAN and GROGU on TV. Disney jas NOT shown me why I should PAY to see this on the big screen

@JohnShaft - YOU should USE more caps LOCK when you COMPLAIN online about MOVIES. People WILL TAKE you more seriously IF you randomly CAPITALIZE and misspell WORDS while whining about A movie YOU HAVEN’T seen.

Filler Episode: The Movie.

The only thing that changes for Mando & Grogu during the course of the film got spoiled in the first trailer: he gets a new Razor Crest. Nothing else of any consequence happens. M&G end the movie the same way they started it. Sigourney kind of felt like stunt casting. She probably filmed all her scenes in less than a week, they just wanted an old face sci-fi nerds would instantly recognize to give her character a sense of authority. (I'm not taking a dig at Sigourney, it was a decent paycheck) but like I don't even remember if anyone even said aloud her character's name.

And Rotta sounding like a dude bro was a little jarring.

JackDeth - 5/22/2026, 9:50 AM
@AscendedExtra - Clearly you didn't actually watch this because they said 'Colonel Ward' a couple of times (not that this matters, as it wasn't her movie). Also, Rotta didn't sound like a dude-bro at all, not sure if you know what that term means. As for nothing of 'consequence' happening, this is the problem right here. This was a SELF-CONTAINED story, only tangentially connected to the main story. That's what made it fun. Not everything has to change the stakes of the whole universe, man.

@JackDeth - Many of them are just aping what they’ve heard online and read in other reviews, which in turn quote each other and aggregate the same damn complaints into a mishmash of nonsense. Repetitive unoriginal drivel. Online Fandom has now turned into its cooler to hate a thing then love it. Especially Disney - the first rule of online cool is you can never ever like Disney.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 5/22/2026, 10:15 AM
@ElJefe - It sure seems that way. I leaned over to my buddies after the film and said, 'Wonder how much the internet is gonna try to get people to hate this.' and we all laughed.

Solo also cost 300-350 million because they completely reshot the entire film. Mandalorian cost 160 million.

Film will make money. It is expected a movie based off TV will make less. That’s why it is also the highest opening for a movie based on a TV show.

On that note. Movie was fun. Felt like a long good episode of season 1 or 2.
JackDeth
JackDeth - 5/22/2026, 9:52 AM
@MrDandy - Agree, but that's just a testament to how good the show is. It always felt like a movie anyways. Now a movie comes out and people compare it to the show. Well, yeah. Same team. Duh. lol
MrDandy
MrDandy - 5/22/2026, 10:17 AM
@JackDeth - I don’t know why that particular group would be hating on it. This is exactly what they’ve been asking for lol. A strong badass male character in a father-son story, kicking ass across the galaxy with almost no female characters whatsoever to complain about. Proof you literally can’t make them happy.

This should have come out after season 2 and before the awful season 3 and the ridiculous Acolyte ruined the last stands of goodwill most had toward the brand. Disney had a Golden Goose and they basically tarred and ruined it themselves

@JohnShaft - it probably won’t bomb given it is looking to recoup 90% of its budget on opening weekend.

Feralwookiee - 5/22/2026, 10:27 AM
@MrDandy - Theatres keep about 50% of box office profits, so the studio never gets that back.
The budget of this extended tv episode is $160 million, which means it would have to make around at least $400 million to start turning a profit.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 5/22/2026, 10:32 AM
@Feralwookiee - we’ve had these debates on other films, my dude. And once again, if movies had to 3x their budget every time, almost no films would make back their money. Theaters on opening weekend keep a cut of sometimes only 30%. That’s just domestic. International is completely rule set depending on region. Rule is usually 2x. And before you say it is 2.5x or 3x just remember we have had this debate before.

I wasn't expecting much since this is based on a show that most people don't have access to.
I don't care about "consequence" or other trivial "preferences" that others may have.
The show was enjoyable and it sounds like the movie is more of that, so that's good.
I just hope they didn't spend too much money on production and marketing so they make a good profit.
By the way, I've seen all of the theatrical Star Wars movies prior to this one, and SOLO was my favorite (despite the fact that I never really liked the character much before his "origin" story).
But that says more about me than the movie. 🤪
