MORTAL KOMBAT II Trailer And Poster Promise Plenty Of Fatalities As Johnny Cage Takes Center Stage

We finally have the new trailer for Mortal Kombat II, and this action-packed, bloody sneak peek is all about Johnny Cage, leaving poor Cole Young relegated to minor supporting player.

In Mortal Kombat II, the fan favourite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds-barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

As we first reported on GameFragger.com, a new trailer and poster for Mortal Kombat II have hit, and the spotlight is squarely on Johnny Cage. The washed-up action movie star finds himself tasked with saving the day by Lord Raiden, though he's not quite ready for that responsibility.

It's immediately clear that Johnny is this franchise's new lead, as Lewis Tan's Cole Young becomes almost an afterthought as we're treated to a series of debuts and returns from iconic Mortal Kombat characters. Cole was pretty divisive, so his being sidelined isn't hugely surprising, and h'e surprisingly easy to miss on the poster.

Beyond that, the Fatalities come thick and fast, and visually, this sequel looks far more in line with the games. For fans of the first instalment, it promises to be a must-watch, and it does appear as if many of the criticisms levelled at that movie have been addressed (good news for those less keen on the 2021 video game adaptation).

Mortal Kombat III was officially announced at New York Comic Con last October, with Jeremy Slater returning to pen the screenplay after writing and executive producing the second instalment. Warner Bros. is said to be "high" on this upcoming second chapter, hence why it was moved to a prime spot this summer.

"I asked for a heavy-action content movie, and for my sins, they gave me one," Urban previously said. "It was the most challenging role that I've ever undertaken in my career. It's the martial arts."

"The form and the style of martial arts is so specific, and the choreography, at times, is so definitive in its movement, and there's a precision of execution for it to look good. It was a huge challenge."

Addressing the battle between Johnny and Kitana that's teased in this latest trailer, the actor added, "He's so rusty. He's neglected his martial arts, he has no connectivity with what he's supposed to be doing, and he's so sloppy." It seems regaining his past glory will also be a big part of the character's story in Mortal Kombat II

In Mortal Kombat II, Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the follow-up to his explosive 2021 cinematic adventure, from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The film is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh and McQuoid, and executive produced by Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff.

Joining McQuoid behind the camera are director of photography Stephen F. Windon, production designer Yohei Taneda, editor Stuart Levy and costume designer Cappi Ireland, with casting by Rich Delia and music by Benjamin Wallfisch.

Mortal Kombat II will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, and is only in theaters and IMAX on May 15, 2026.

Looks like a nice improvement over the last film. Cole as a lead was boring.

Kitana beats Kahn, you know, the big bad emperor who basically held Katana as his adoptive daughter / prisoner for roughly 10 thousand years, the reason it took this long to break away from him was because she needed stronger allies to defeat him. This film appears to be making the same mistake MK11 did where it turns out she could beat him because she had the power in her the whole time, fantastic writing. This film is suppose to be the tournament and it apears earth realm's champions will not be of earth realm, in the game there's supposed to be rules against that, which is why Lui Kang's master could never enter the tournament. Kitana's realm lost to outworld which makes her from outworld going forward so her victory in the tournament would mean outworld wins. I don't think the writers are going to care for that rule.

It's called mortal kombat, the mortals should be the ones who have to win it in order to save their earth, thats kinda the whole plot of MK. Now it's gonna be an immortal alien coming to save the planet. This is not meant to be James Gunn's 2025 "Super""man", does anyone remember that piece of shit? it was a piece of shit.

Now where was I

Scorpion's screen time is less than the last film, supposidly it's just that scene in the garden + his final fight with Noob at the end.
Noob is only in that fight scene at the end as well.
Raiden was reported to do jack shit in this film although theres a shot in this trailer which appears to show him attacking Shang Tsung.
Shang Tsung is barely in the movie.
The mighty Cole Young dies Young (I feel I'm allowed to give that one away).
The leads are Johnny and Kitana, not Liu Kang ......again.
One the one positive leak that I could find, Kahn is handled well and is betrayed as a real threat to the gang, aside from that part where he gets pegged by Kitana.

Im liking it. Its giving some heart in this trailer. Fingers crossed they improve on this one. Notice Lewis Tan is hardly seen (if at all). This is already better than the first.

EscapeMySight - 2/25/2026, 3:36 PM
@UnderBelly - The whole Cole Young character was the most ridiculous thing ever, lol. Thank goodness he's hardly in this one. Still though, MK on the big screen needs a reboot with a creative team with more vision IMO. Hopefully these films show that there's interest for the property and pave the way for that.

Looks better than the first one at least. They've got my money.

This isn't the MK film series we deserve though. I feel all these guys care about are showing us cool fatalities and MK is MUCH MORE than that. MK lore is SO rich and epic, they aren't even touching on it with these movies.

Hell, even the MK Conquest 90s series did a far better job with MK lore.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 2/25/2026, 5:43 PM
@EscapeMySight - Lol I promise an MK game that truly throws out every shred of the lore is not going to do better than one with no fatalities.
EscapeMySight
EscapeMySight - 2/25/2026, 5:47 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - Where did I say they shouldn't do fatalities? Obviously you do it, its an important aspect, but its only one part of what makes MK great.

I actually love how bad this looks. It’s like they are purposefully trying to make a film worse than the last one. If so, it’s awesome.

That trailer looked great! I like Urban, and I like Cage. I just never thought I'd see them together as one, lol. I also always believed that Lu Kang should always be the MK lead. This fun-looking film may convince me otherwise.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/25/2026, 4:17 PM
I got some enjoyment out of the first film but this definitely seems like an improvement imo…

That is mainly because Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage just already looks like a more compelling & charismatic protagonist then Lewis Tan’s Cole Young (who I bet dies early on in the film I feel given we have seen barely anything of him).

Anyway , looking forward to checking this out!!.

I think the trailer looks great. I enjoyed the first movie, but this definitely looks more like what fans would want from Mortal Kombat. If I'm being honest, I'd rethink that poster if I were them. Rather generic.

Man, I am so down! I knew Urban as Johnny Cage would work. Cage is charismatic and a smart ass, Urban could play that in his sleep. I never got why everyone thought he was bad casting. The trailer looks pretty awesome.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/25/2026, 7:11 PM
@LibraMatter - I think he’s just gruffer and older than people expected or wanted Johnny to be.

I like how this Johnny is a bit more worn and weary but still has the charisma and smart ass attitude at times even if the cockiness is dialed down.
LibraMatter
LibraMatter - 2/25/2026, 9:27 PM
@TheVisionary25 - That makes sense. True. Johnny was kind of a party boy, Hollywood conceited d-bag that also kicked ass in MK lore. This one doesn’t seem like that. More likable.

The trailer is full of special effects that aren't so special anymore. Stuff that can be done by anyone with AI. Maybe it is AI.

The dialogue sounds like it was cut in a studio.

A chubby faced Karl Urban is showcased like he's RDJ and can carry the whole movie.

The trailer is inferior to the 90s MK trailer.
