IMAX Takes A Shot At Disney's Infinity Vision "Marketing Play" For Avengers: Doomsday

IMAX has thrown shade at Disney's plans to launch Infinity Vision for the Avengers: Endgame re-release, arguing that it's a ploy to make up for Avengers: Doomsday not playing on IMAX screens.

During last month's CinemaCon, Disney announced plans to launch Infinity Vision, a new certification for premium large format (PLF) theaters. Starting with Avengers: Endgame, the "Infinity Vision" branding will also be used for this December's Avengers: Doomsday.

Created in collaboration with global theatrical exhibition partners, Infinity Vision will "signify to audiences which auditoriums offer the biggest, brightest and most immersive cinematic experiences." In doing so, it reportedly sets a new benchmark for theatrical presentation, certifying auditoriums that meet rigorous technical standards.

To make the cut, they'll need to have the largest screens for maximum scale, laser projection for superior brightness and clarity, and premium audio formats for fully immersive sound. With over 75 domestic and 300 global exhibitor PLFs currently available to consumers, the idea behind Infinity Vision is to help audiences identify the best theatrical experience.

Some have speculated that it's a gimmick meant to make up for the fact that Dune: Part Three will be released in IMAX theaters this December, whereas Avengers: Doomsday will not. Now, that's pretty much exactly what IMAX has dismissed Infinity Vision while unveiling its first-quarter financial results.

IMAX CFO Natasha Fernandes said, "From our view, we feel it’s a marketing play to try and offset the fact that they don’t have an IMAX platform or brand for Avengers: Doomsday. It doesn’t offer the consumer anything that they couldn’t get yesterday. "

She added that Marvel fans are "among the savvy and most discerning moviegoers out there. And there’s a reason why we’re the undisputed leader in premium cinema worldwide. No one can match our relationships with filmmakers."

In other words, IMAX isn't concerned about fans being fooled into thinking that seeing Avengers: Doomsday in Infinity Vision will be quite the same experience as true IMAX.

Dune: Part Three will get an exclusive three-week run on the giant-sized screens, which will hurt Avengers: Doomsday's box office takings. It's doubtful that anyone will decide not to see the movie just because it isn't on an IMAX screen, but the Dune threequel definitely has the advantage when "Dunesday" rolls around on December 18.

In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

Avengers: Doomsday stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Robert Downey Jr. Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Mabel Cadena, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, India Rose Hemsworth, and Wesley Holloway all make their Avengers franchise debuts.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps leads Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn join them, as do X-Men franchise stars Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, with Deadpool & Wolverine star Channing Tatum.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18.

@dragon316 - I will Avengers Doomsday on a Dolby Cinema at AMC my first choice. I don't even go to the IMAX screens.

@OneMoreTime - Dolby is way better unless you have access to a REAL IMAX screen, which 90% of us do not.

Marvel Studios don't need IMAX Screens to Successful at the Box Office. Other Options out there. I stopped going to IMAX Screens long ago.

I will Avengers Doomsday on a Dolby Cinema at AMC

The only way to see ANY Blockbuster in a theater.

I'm not really sure about this strategy of looking to antagonize the studio that's making, and made you more money than almost any other studio and which will in the future.

She could have just chosen to stay out of the fight and let them say whatever they wanted with their marketing.

Dune will make all of the money during their 3 week exclusive window (I believe they're sold out) - and probably not much elsewhere where they have to compete directly with Doomsday, and then once their exclusivity window ends and they (inevitably) lose most of those screens to Doomsday, it will mostly be the end of their run anyway.

And as for IMAX, you go from sold out Dune 3 screenings to sold out Doomsday screenings.
So essentially a win-win for them either way - so why kick the hornet's nest?

@spr0cks - who said doomsday is getting a full IMAX release after dune? Because that's not going to happen. Maybe one week almost a month later lmao. And they're right to throw shade at Disney. They're mad they won't be able to make every penny opening weekend because they didn't plan ahead. Maybe next time they could make a 70mm print off of the digital master

Lie-Max is literally a marketing ploy though on 90% of their screens???

IMAX hasn’t offered us anything except a little bit of aspect ratio and USED to have great surround sound. Now their audio doesn’t even sound different from regular surround sound for other movies.
I’m interested in seeing what Infinity Vision has to offer. I’m guessing it’ll be just like IMAX so who gives F. If IMAX wanted to work with Marvel then they should’ve made Doomsday a priority.

@slickrickdesigns - all they're doing is labeling a screen that has laser and or 7.1 audio. That's it. And look at how many of those screens there are and tell me it's not a waste of time or a stupid gimmick

I live 238 miles from a genuine IMAX screen. I've watched movies in the digital IMAX in my home city, but it's not worth the extra money. There's no discernable difference in quality from watching in any good quality digital theatre. Outside of largely inaccessible genuine IMAX screens it's just a gimmick like 4k upscaling which usually makes everything look like a haunted soap opera.

@Why - same here. I have a 40min car ride to get to my closest Imax screen and the few times I did it, it was just for the fun of going with friends and not for the "extra" value an Imax screen gave

@Why - infinity vision sounds like a worse gimmick though.

Honestly I can't get the hype for Dune.
I like the books tho, but the movies look SO bland, and they are trying to sella it like it's this snob cinema.

@Yellow - The Dune films are some of the most visually stunning films ever made.

But nice try.

This is hilarious considering the well know "lie-Max" at most theatres.

They are pointing out their own business model, lmao
bobevanz
bobevanz - 5/1/2026, 2:55 PM
@SATW42 - and 80% of non IMAX/Dolby screens aren't even laser or 7.1 audio. So they're just pretending there's thousands of high quality screens when there aren't

Most of IMAX have outdated 2K Xenon 6-channel screens. Regardless, Disney didn't plan ahead so they have to take a backseat to Dune. They're just trying to make headlines for relevant news. I bet they WANTED to charge more just because of this made up branding. Also the percent of Laser projectors are less than 20% of all screens. They cant label IMAX or Dolby screens for obvious reasons. So what's the [frick]ing point? Just to stay relevant
