James Gunn Teases Clayface's DCU Return: "I Can't Wait For You To See What We Do With Him"

On the Clayface premiere's red carpet, James Gunn was asked whether fans can look forward to seeing the shape-shifting villain in the DCU again...

Clayface held its world premiere last night, and the first reactions have been mostly very positive. The full reviews may tell a slightly different story, but we have been hearing good things about the first DCU horror movie since those early test screenings.

Spoilers have yet to find their way online, but it probably won't surprise anyone to learn that Matt Hagen survives to wreak havoc another day!

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was asked about future plans for the shape-shifting villain while speaking to Cinemex on the red carpet.

 "I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points," Gunn said. "And yeah, this isn't the last we'll see of Clayface. And I can't wait for you guys to see what we do with him."

Of course, we have seen Hagen before, as it's already been confirmed that this version of Clayface is the one that was introduced in the animated Creature Commandos series.

Whether Hagen's eventual DCU return will see him face off against Batman remains to be seen, but we'd be very surprised if an encounter with the Dark Knight didn't factor into Gunn's plans for the villain.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

I'm guessing he'll be in some villain team that's gonna go up against the Justice League

@bkmeijer1 - I don't have much confidence in the DCU right now, but if MOT does turn a profit, they could go with the Secret Society, having already established Grodd and Sinestro as well.

@Feralwookiee - no, he lives in a suburban house, plays video games and is obsessed with Lesbians.

That sentence sounds like ai, or me trying to make shit up, but it's literally his appearance in creature commandos.

Got tickets for this last week. If this works, and turns a profit, I can see a series of villain based movies from DC.

Def like the idea of leaning into the horror aspect with a character like Clayface

It’s honestly looks like a good horror film. People should step back from their DCU grievances and just look at the film for what it is. I haven’t seen it yet ofc so it could be bad, but from the trailers and R rating alone, it’s obviously not some cookie cutter Morbius or Kraven.

I think the body horror scenes could be neat, but they've failed to sell me on the characterization aspect, so will probably catch it online.

We've seen nothing to really emphasis the nature of his character. Sure they are probably doing the arrogant narcissist at the start but what's he supposed to alter to? If he is just going to be mopey/depressed about his face and body horror until he goops out fully as Clayface at the end then that's really uninteresting and at the moment that's all I see them teasing in the trailers. Him hunting down the people who did it to him is the blandest option you can do whether accurate to source or not.

Plus the notion that this is a prequel to the animated series so whatever portrayal of Clayface it does will be impacted knowing the outcome of his character is that he becomes a goofy fat gamer goop who then gets electrocuted to death (Until he actually returns elsewhere he seems pretty dead and regardless of Gunn's remarks it doesn't seem like they have any other plans for the character)

It's so smart to introduce the villains before the heroes

@theFUZZ008 -

I want the Batman as much as the next person but does he really need to be “introduced”? Doesn’t everyone and their grandma know Batman’s story by now?
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 10/14/2026, 9:42 AM
@PS118 - Well, like I said earlier, we don't need an ORIGIN of course, but I think establishing this new iteration of Batman deserves some type of introduction BEFORE his own Solo Dcu debut.
"World's Finest" would be THE place to introduce him amd lay the groundwork and what to expect going forward.
Establish what Batman has been up to, where this version stands. Introduce Alfred, Gordon, and ESPECIALLY A ROBIN. It could be Dick, so when Damian shows up it would be a good way for Dick to transition into Nightwing Or they could use Tim.amd have Dick show up.AS Nightwing.
What I kean is just a one movie set up would be enough to then move FULL SPEED ahead into T Brave And The Bold and then, hopefully, a new JL film.

@BiffDitko -

Yeah I’m on the same page with you on this.

I would be fine with Dick already being Nightwing while Batman gets the primary focus with Superman and their friendship without also introducing the audience to Robin (who has not had good live action representation). I think Worlds Finest with just bat and supes would be legit then BatB will introduce Damian and Nightwing should show up as well. That movie should also mention the death of Jason Todd which could set up a Red Hood film later.

Clayface will be a spy working for Lex Luthor as part of the Legion of Doom. He is the perfect spy—a shapeshifter and an actor.

Keep the budget modest/low risk, build up to 'The Mud Pack', then 'Ultimate Clayface' vs Batman?

Oh FFS! Please don’t tell me HE (Gunn) is doing something with him!? The movie looks great. We don’t need Gunn’s shitty writing ruining a well established character. Please let him show up in someone else’s film, by a competent writer / director.

It's a new Batman. He needs to be shown before Matt Hagen. The majority of the world is not aware of Matt Hagen, and they certainly don't give a [frick] about him unless he's up against Batman.

but what if the fans don't care Batman-less villain story? Honestly; just use the animated series two-parter for your script.
