Could This Be Bruce Wayne? James Gunn Replies To Post Fan-Casting SUPERMAN Finalist Tom Brittney As Batman

James Gunn has curiously responded to a post fan-casting former Superman hopeful as Batman. Could this be a sign DC Studios has found its Dark Knight?

There's a lot of mystery surrounding the DCU's Batman. The burning question on everyone's minds is who will end up playing him. Multiple fan casts have floated around online, from Brandon Sklenar to Alan Ritchson. Unfortunately, with The Brave and the Bold not looking to be any closer, and Batman not expected to show up in 2026's Clayface, the casting of the Caped Crusader seems to be quite far away... or is it?

In an unexpected turn of events, we may (emphasis on "may") have gotten a tease about DCU's Dark Knight from a surprising source. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn recently posted a picture showcasing the storyboards for his Superman follow-up, Man of Steel, which he's gearing up to start shooting in April.

A fan replied to the post with a picture of Tom Brittney (who was one of the finalists to play Clark Kent in Superman) captioned with, "Bruce says [merman emoji]." For context, the merman emoji was featured in Peacemaker, and is regularly used by Gunn on social media. Surprisingly, Gunn actually replied to the post, stating: "That guy is a great f—king actor!"

The post has very little engagement, so it's curious that Gunn chose to specifically reply to it, likely being aware of the attention it would garner. The director enjoys teasing future announcements with sneaky social media posts. A good example is the time he posted an image of Mister Terrific prior to him being announced as part of the Superman cast.

Furthermore, there's history between Tom Brittney and DC Studios. As mentioned, the actor was one of the top contenders for the role of Clark Kent, alongside David Corenswet. And here's a key thing to consider: If he likes an actor enough during an audition, Gunn keeps them in mind for future roles. This is a common practice in the industry, but the director appears particularly fond of it. A big example is Nicholas Hoult, who got the role of Lex Luthor after being a finalist for Superman.

This isn't the first time Gunn has praised Brittney either. In 2024, a fan on Threads asked him if it was true that the actor had worn and torn Henry Cavill's Man of Steel costume for his Superman audition. Gunn replied: "Yes. Tom messed it up and then Corenswet came in and he was way too tall, so it just got torn to shreds. BTW, Tom is truly one of my favorite actors. Incredibly talented guy."

Superman and Batman have typically been portrayed as having very similar builds and even facial structures in the comics, so it wouldn't be surprising to see a Clark Kent hopeful get the role of the Dark Knight.

During an interview with The Ringer-Verse, Gunn stated he had actors in mind for Batman, but cautioned those people mind not even end up playing the Dark Knight:

"I mean, do I have ideas about actors to play Batman? Absolutely, I do. I have guys I like. I have guys that are at the top of the list for me. Just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman. But [...] those aren't the people... they aren't David Corenswet. So, they didn't get the job."

Ultimately, this might just be Gunn praising a performer he had a good experience with during the Superman audition process. However, as mentioned, the fact that he specifically replied to a post linking him to Batman, when he doesn't respond to other posts asking him about the future of the DCU or that propose other actors for roles, says a lot about the potential importance of his response.

The Brave and the Bold does not have a release date, but the Caped Crusader will return to the big screen in The Batman Part II, which releases on October 1, 2027. Meanwhile, the next feature in the DCU, Supergirl, comes out June 26, 2026.

Do you think Gunn was hinting at Brittney being cast as Batman? Who would you pick to play the Dark Knight? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

@Amaru - It's undignified for the person writing the Superman movie to talk like that. I should be able to enjoy these movies with my kids. I shouldn't have to worry that Gunn's weird fetishes and disgusting humor being exposed to kids who just want to watch movies and shows about DC Comics characters.

What's so funny about Truth, Justice, and the American Way?

@Amaru - Huh? The whole plot of the movie revolves around a rumor that Superman has a harem of sex slaves.

Superman was created as a Messiah allegory sent by his heavenly father to save the people of earth from their own sins. Gunn misunderstands the character on a fundamental level by making Jor-El a sexual predator.

You saw the movie, right?

@InfinitePunches - Gunn is 100% a pdfile at worst and a weirdo at best. Dude made a Superman movie where a major plot point is that Superman was sent to have a HAREM (something kids do not and SHOULD not know about) and then followed that up with degenerate garbage Peacemaker where there's an orgy in the first episode and nudity galore. He even indirectly told kids to watch it as it's a "Superman Sequel". This guy is a creep and absolutely should not be the head of DC.

When do you ever hear the director of an MCU film talk like this? So unprofessional and disgusting.

Any actor that takes a role with Gunn should have a clause in their contract that prevents them from being kicked in the balls on camera.

Is Daniel confirmed to really be Josh? Starting the article with "There's a lot of mystery surrounding the DCU's Batman" is almost exactly how Josh starts most of his articles.
"There's a lot of intrigue surrounding..."
"There's a lot of excitement surrounding..."

Gunn might just be complimenting the guy and thinks of him as someone who has a lot of potential rather then eyeing him for a specific role in the DCU…

Hell , he might have genuinely liked his audition for Clark Kent/Superman but perhaps didn’t feel he was the right fit for his version of the character.

Regardless , I haven’t seen Britney’s work but I would give him a shot if he’s indeed chosen to be Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DCU!!.

Seems like he's mostly saying this due to already having seen him act when he was one of the finalists to play Superman tbh, I wouldn't be too mad at him playing Batman (dude's definitely got the jawline for it), but he's actually my choice to Apollo if they ever get around to making that Authority movie.

Too Handsome Squidward looking imo. I could see him more as Aquaman. But I really don't care who plays Batman at this point. I've already checked out of this universe.

Bring on the Batman Part II.

He has no chin. His voice isn't deep enough. The only thing he has going for him is his age and height. I don't see him as Batman, but I could see him playing someone else in the DCU maybe.

Trump Making Batman Great Again? Report Claims He ‘Wants to Shape Popular Culture’

Trump Making Batman Great Again? Report Claims He ‘Wants to Shape Popular Culture’
A new report claims President Donald Trump wants to influence popular culture through the sale of Warner Bros. Discovery – to Skydance/Paramount – as part of his broader push into entertainment, and that includes a revival of classic action franchises like Rush Hour.
Could it also be the reason for the possibly return of Ben Affleck as Batman and the return of the SnyderVerse?
Trump Making Batman Great Again? Report Claims He ‘Wants to Shape Popular Culture’
Report: Trump Pressing for a Rush Hour Revival
Semafor.com reports that Trump has “personally pressed” Paramount’s ownership to bring back Rush Hour with Brett Ratner for a fourth movie.
A source said to be familiar with the conversations says Trump offered creative input on potential projects and expressed interest in the kind of action-comedy hits that defined the late ’80s and ’90s. Trump is also said to be a big fan of Bloodsport.
Ratner, who fell out of Hollywood after 2017 sexual misconduct allegations, has quietly worked his way back. Semafor says he spent months following Melania Trump for an Amazon documentary that reportedly sold for $40 million.

Trump Wants Old-School Action Movies Back
According to the report, Trump wants to revive movies with the tone of classic buddy-cop films and testosterone-heavy action stories.

Producer Dallas Sonnier told Semafor he expects “a wave of classically male-driven movies with mentally tough, traditional, courageous, confident heroes… plus explosions, gun battles, helicopters, fistfights, and car chases.”

That description lines up with the era of Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, and even Zack Snyder versions of Batman — grim, aggressive, and centered around mythic, uncompromising heroes.
Trump has publicly praised Ben Affleck’s Batman, calling the actor’s performance the best live-action version. Affleck confirmed, “He was thrilled I was playing Batman.”

Trump even once said, “I am Batman.”

With Snyder releasing a new Henry Cavill Superman image on Veterans Day — and with our reporting that the SnyderVerse is back in play behind the scenes — the idea of Trump backing a harder-edged Batman isn’t coming out of nowhere.

If Trump wants to shape pop culture and bring back the kind of films he thinks Hollywood abandoned, Batman is exactly the type of character who would fit that agendA
We can also add that if Trump is influencing pop culture, would Trump let someone like James Gunn develop Batman? We’ve already been told those inside Warner Bros. are worried what Gunn would do with Batman following his goofy Superman and DCU.
