HBO Boss Casey Bloys Says They're "Kicking Around Ideas" For THE PENGUIN Season 2 After Emmy Success

Casey Bloys has confirmed that The Batman director Matt Reeves and The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc are "kicking around ideas" for a second season, and it sounds like a priority for the cable network.

The Penguin was an instant hit when it premiered on HBO last year. Returning to Gotham City in the wake of The Riddler's attack in The Batman, the series followed Oz Cobb as he climbed the ranks and became the new Kingpin of Crime.

With glowing reviews and high ratings, it didn't take long before we started hearing chatter about a possible season 2. The series was likely intended as a one-off to bridge the gap between The Batman and The Batman Part II. However, success on this level means it's inevitable that executives will push for a follow-up/expansion.

After all, why do you think The Last of Us is being stretched into three seasons or more?

Talking to Variety, Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, weighed in on the possibility of us getting The Penguin season 2 after the show won a total of nine Emmys at this Sunday's ceremony and the recent Creative Arts Emmys.

"They’re kicking around ideas. Obviously, Matt’s got to get the [next 'The Batman'] movie going. That is underway, I believe," Bloys shared. "So I think he and Lauren [LeFranc] are talking about ideas. So I’m hopeful that there will be another story to tell."

The executive also weighed in on Colin Farrell missing out on "Best Actor" for The Penguin, despite being a favourite for the prize after other recent award success for what proved to be a transformative performance.

"I was really hopeful. And obviously he had won many awards leading up to that, so that’s usually a good sign," he said. "But again, you never know. Whether it’s recognized or not doesn’t affect that the performance was fantastic. But Stephen Graham — 'Adolescence' was a really, really powerful show. So tough competition, and it doesn’t always break your way. For Colin, I think his performance was pretty extraordinary."

Farrell will return as Oz Cobb in The Batman Part II, but he's only expected to appear in a handful of scenes. The plan may be for The Penguin to be the third movie's big bad, and if we do get a second season, then it could bridge the gap between the sequel and threequel.

Asked recently about a potential second season of The Penguin, Farrell said, "I have no idea if it’s happening. I know that I heard rumblings that they were thinking they’d like to do a second season, but I don’t know if it’s a good idea. I don’t know the way you go back to the trough. And part of me wants to go, 'Just let it go people. We got away with it. Leave it as it is."

He added, "But, look, if they came up with a fantastic idea or something like that, of course I’d be open to it."

The Penguin is now streaming on HBO Max, while The Batman Part II will be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.

I might be in the minority here, but I honestly don't think that they need a season 2 for the character. I favor the idea of tackling different antagonist in one off shows to delve deeper into their backgrounds after we see cameos or features of them in the movies. A few folks mentioned the idea of seeing Two-Face or Scarecrow in solo series and I thought those were pretty dope ideas.

Regardless, the production team did a good job with the show. I just don't know if they could strike lightening twice with the same character.

@TheRationalNerd - No I think that's rational. Penguin was great, but they should walk through the Rogues gallery and not stick to just one.

@JustAWaffle - Glad it isn't just me. Even if they used the series to introduce more villains in this universe I'd be in support of that, but I just don't want Oz to become a focal point of this universe's villain gallery. I guess he's an integral role player with the stories but I'm sure other characters can share that same shine.

@TheRationalNerd - I'm with you. A second season is unnecessary.
I wish executives, producers and the high-ups would someday learn the meaning of the phrase "quit while you're ahead."
They put out a second season and let's say it's only 1/4th as good as the first, people then will lose interest quickly in that whole universe. Not worth it.

@lazlodaytona - Yeah, for all we know they might've already had some pretty good ideas under wraps during the filming of season 1. But I strongly agree with you, you already made a stellar debut with a side character, let's focus on other stories for other characters. It's like if the MCU made a Vulture spin off series for Spider-Man. Let's see a Doc Ock series next instead of marginalizing on one character.

@dragon316 - Translation: “Feels like a joke movie all over again. The first one was good, the second one sucked. Take the win and walk away. I haven’t seen the series yet, so I can’t comment on that.”

@TheRationalNerd - absolutely. Penguin gave me hope for the Reeve's-verse because I initially wasn't into the movie. Went back to watch it after...it got better for me.

I'd be into a Crane story, maybe Freeze but the budget would be high, didn't really like Catwoman so not her, or even Hush so we wouldn't have to include his origin in the movie he 'might' be in.
I actually wouldn't even mind a Bane story.

If they don't wanna give Catwoman her own show, I'd have her break out Sofia in Season 2, and have them go up against Oz.

No need for a season 2. I would maybe be OK with a Sophia/Catwoman spinoff of done right. The only problem there is that we basically got both characters stories in The Batman and Penguin.

Regardless, I think Lauren LeFranc proved herself to be a really good show runner so HBO better get another show-regardless if it’s Batman/Penguin adjacent or just another character focused crime show.

There aren’t a ton of really good show runners out there so hopefully LeFranc has another project lined up soon. I am really loving Task right now which is from the writer of Mare of Easttown and Out of the Furnace.

Doesn't that kind of thing apply to everything? Like, in all of life?

Would love if they introduced Black Mask in a season 2 as somewhat of a rival for Oz

Damn , how many articles we getting about The Penguin S2 that essentially say the same thing which is that they are kicking around ideas and they’ll see where it goes?.

Anyway , if it happens then great since I was a big fan of the first season but if not then oh well since it worked on its own too…

I do think there’s a potential story there of Oz trying to hold onto his power as a new crime boss such as Black Mask comes into his territory but that’s just a kernel that would need far more fleshing out!!.

don’t ruin a good thing. I think penguin season one works perfectly as a limited contained story. I feel like when you start asking these after a big success type of questions you take the chance of ruining what came before.

Talking about The Penguin Season 2 on the red carpet for the Emmy's where it is nominated in several limited series categories is bad form.

It seems to me that the wrong person (or people) are running DCU.

It's Reeves' Batman movie that's the highest grossing DC movie at the box office (And it did this during Covid when China was completely shut down), and his spin-off TV show won all the awards at the Emmys.

@spr0cks - Lauren Lefranc should be writing for the Batman part 2, not Reeves. she does characterization and story so much better than him.
