BLACK WIDOW Star Scarlett Johansson Opens Up On Lack Of Support From Other Actors During Disney Legal Battle

Scarlett Johansson has reflected on being the lone voice fighting Disney after Black Widow was released on streaming, and reflects on coming under fire for repeatedly defending filmmaker Woody Allen.

With the pandemic still raging in 2021, Disney made the shocking, and ultimately controversial, decision to release Black Widow on its short-lived "Premier Access" service on Disney+. While the movie did play in theaters, the move sealed Black Widow's fate as a box office flop, and for lead star Scarlett Johansson, that was a problem.

Her contract specified that she be paid millions of dollars in backend compensation, meaning Black Widow largely byasssing was a clear breach of contract. Why? Well, a guaranteed theatrical release was written into Johansson's contract.

When the actress looked to get what she was owed, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek came out fighting, revealing to the world that Johansson had been paid $20 million upfront (a no-no in Hollywood etiquette). Under intense pressure, the House of Mouse made things right and the Avengers: Endgame star reportedly received upwards of $40 million.

In a new interview with The Telegraph, Johansson—who is looking forward to working with Disney "on a number of upcoming projects," likely including Tangled—weighed in on her colleagues largely remaining silent during her legal battle.

"I mean, it would be great to have more support from the community and my peers – vocally, publicly – on certain issues that affect the entire industry," she said. "It’s always helpful to have more voices, you guys," Johansson added, acknowledging that being a lone voice "can still be really effective."

"As we moved from the model of theatrical box-office bonuses to understanding how that translated to streaming, it had just become this nebulous thing, with no guidelines around it," the Avengers: Endgame star mused. "So to be able to impact that moves everything in the right direction. But yes, I would welcome more support."

Johansson has previously come under fire for defending filmmaker Woody Allen. Various sexual misconduct and abuse allegations have followed him for decades, though he's never faced any legal consequences.

Asked if that has lost her any friends or work, she replied, "I guess it’s hard to know. You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in."

"At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn," she noted. "I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured."

Johansson has repeatedly said her time as Black Widow is over, though many fans remain convinced that she will appear in one or both of the upcoming Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars

I didn’t know about her being a defender of Woody Allen which is unfortunate but it’s obvious that it hasn’t impacted her career since she’s one of , if not the biggest actress in Hollywood.

While one isn’t gonna be on the side of a millionaire having more money , I do appreciate her fighting for what she was owed which I think we can all get behind!!.

Her legal troubles with Disney were ill timed. It was during Covid when millions of people were losing everything she was busy complaining she wants millions more. It was tone deaf. Of course most would not support that. She should've waited.

@defenderofthefaith - I guess, but I also think it would have been poorly received either way. I think a lot of people took it as her saying she was one of the best and worth RDJ money and people were like, 'Who does she think she is? She's no Meryl Streep.' It's a shame the media jumped on her the way they did.

"it would be nice if people spoke up". "I've learned that sometimes it's not your time."

So it's ok if it's not YOUR time to speak up, but if it's not OTHER people's time that works for you, it's a problem?

I love her btw, but I call em as I see em.

hmm, defending Woody Allen is a weird choice. Just did my own research and while this is admittedly some lawyer like technicalities, she's not defending his actions, she's just choosing to believe Woody's side of the story.

Me, I don't believe Woody Allen for a second, but it's her perogotive to choose to believe him. That doesn't mean she supports his alleged actions. You can even say she's sticking her head in the sand, but outright saying she defends pedophelia is a jump.

@SATW42 - Yeh normally it tends to be a case that someone who thinks they know someone and has seen no evidence to say they did bad things tend towards believing them over the one making allegations they don't know or trust and no more than that.

The problem of that is, obviously, serial abusers tend to be very good at putting up a false front thus must don't see the evil that lies beneath so your kinda damned either way if you DON'T stand with someone you think you know and trust or distance yourself from them.

Why you WILL have some in the public eye who may believe someone LIKE Woody or any other celeb accused of doing evil things when allegations come out but opt to keep their opinions to themselves and not do anything to defend them at all. That occurred with Craig Charles who was the victim of fabricated rape allegations and even jailed pending trial and few if any publicly spoke out in his defence until after it was proven the woman was lying, that lack of public support meant public opinion skewed heavily towards assuming guilt rather than innocent till proven otherwise which almost ended his entire career overnight.

Dunno if it was ScarJo or not but one celeb still gets tarred with the pedo/rapist defender brush here from time to time when all they did was attend the first day in court in support of someone she thought she knew and believed his side but soon as she saw/heard the evidence realised, yeh he was bad, and stopped supporting him OR defending him in any way and ended all contact with him.

Why unless I really know someone well IRL I try not to take sides but if someone thinks they do they shouldn't be damned for initially trusting them and showing initial solidarity even if/when that trust turns out to be misplaced, only if they continue to support them AFTER it is proven beyond reasonable doubt they did do whatever evil thing.

I always thought something was off with Woody Allen, had no clue the nature or reason why I felt that way but found most his films hard to watch cos of it. My established opinion of him meant I found it VERY hard to believe anything he said but on it's own that didn't auto mean he was lying either so kept out of all discussions regarding it all completely.

She has been paid zillions of dollars. If her feelings got hurt, well boo hoo.

Broads are always whining about something.
