New Study Points To Movie Theater Audiences Dramatically Decreasing When They Finally Re-Open

Movie theaters across the globe have been forced to close due to COVID-19, and a new study has pointed to them being in trouble when doors are finally able to re-open. Find out more details here...

March was a crazy month for the world, and with the global COVID-19 pandemic likely to take over most of 2020, you probably won't be surprised to learn that many members of the public in the United States aren't overly keen on returning to public events once things start slowly returning to normal.

In a survey published by Performance Research (via Variety), 44% of those asked have said they are unlikely to attend large public events even once they're cleared by the CDC.

Thing are even worse for movie theaters, though, as 49% of respondents said it would take "a few months" to "possibly never" for them to return, and 28% even said they will visit them less often than now even once it's safe to do so. 15% did admit to saying that they're planning to go to the movies more often, and 58% said their attendance won't change.

However, as the trade notes, "the net effect suggests an alarming erosion of theatrical returns that exhibitors and studios alike can ill afford." Theme parks have also been hit badly based on these results, and it definitely appears as if there's going to be a lot of fear among people for a long time to come.

There's been a lot of chatter about studios moving towards Digital releases moving forward based on what's happening with the Coronavirus, and while upcoming releases like No Time To Die, Morbius, and Wonder Woman 1984 all have new release dates, that won't help them much if moviegoers decide they don't feel safe watching them on the big screen.

Will you guys be rushing back to theaters?

Considering they're asking people like right in the middle of this pandemic, this seems really flawed. Variety doesnt seem like the most scientific source.

My wife and I want to go back to the theatres, but we fall into the no rush to run straight back once they open again.

Do you think there is any way in the future, you would need to produce a ‘negative test result’ to be granted admittance into a function that has a large group of people? Once they have the 10-15 minute COVID-19 Home Test, people have to provide the results in order to gain admittance?

I guess right now that seems likely with the current mindset, but once a clear has been given a lot of people start to go out again even if they say now that they won't (atleast thats my take)

People answer one way in a survey that the height of some crisis and then act a different way months after. Happens all the time. If the people that said they won’t go to the movies watch friends and family go to the movies unharmed how long are they really going to remain scared and hold back?

I guess I'll probably be less likely to see a movie I was on the fence about seeing for a while, but I can't imagine the people that keep harping on how they believe seeing every movie ever made in theaters is their "giving the movie a chance" will change.

Yes, I'm not going back right away unless I can catch a weekday matinee when I'm one of the very few in the room (I actually enjoy this way, anyway).

Until I actually get the virus and live through it, I will still be at risk when the theaters open (thought not as much as I am now). I am in the high-risk category that stands a chance of dying if I get this.

So, I will be avoiding risks for long after the public starts lessening their social distancing (as much as possible, anyway).

@LSHF - bear in mind you have to hope they’re cleaning all the seats between showings properly... personally I’m not willing to put that kind of faith in my local theater lol.

Stay safe my friend

@PicolasCage - The only one I would think about trusting is Alamo Drafthouse. And even that is a huge maybe

I don't believe it at all because they're answering with what's going on currently in mind. Things will change by then and so will their opinions. They'll go to the cinema again once it's safe and go to public events. It's fine.

The only people rushing back to the theaters day 1 will be the people who have already been downplaying the virus all along and most likely not been employing proper hygiene practices.

So yeah, there’s no [frick]ing chance I want to go sit in close proximity with those types of people immediately after the quarantine lifts.

It makes very little sense to avoid movie theaters if you go back to work and half your co-workers are going to the movies, restaurants, concerts, sporting events, etc and then you hang out with your friends half of which are going to movies, restaurants, and your kids are going to school with kids half of which are going to movies, restaurants, etc and then you are getting together regularly with your family half of which are going to movies, restaurant, etc... You might as well just go to the movies yourself. And people will realize this very quickly.

@TheUnworthyThor -

That makes a lot of sense.

The only issue I see with this (and I may be lacking some knowledge on the subject) is that until I either get vaccinated or get the virus and live through it, I will be subject (for a long time) to get it.

And being in a high-risk group that could likely die from this, no matter how many people I am forced to be with, everyone of them could pass the virus on to me, so every single potential carrier could add up to my death.

I know there is a lot more information that I will need when the time comes.
