DOCTOR STRANGE Writer Explains How Nightmare Was Going To Factor Into The Movie Before Plans Changed

Doctor Strange writer C. Robert Cargill has explained how Nightmare was originally going to factor into the movie before villain plans shifted to Dormammu and Kaecillius...

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange saw Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme face off against Mads Mikkelsen's Kaecillius, before ultimately matching wits with the Dread Dormammu. But neither of those characters was the creative team's first choice for the movie's primary antagonist.

Both director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill have previously mentioned that they wanted Nightmare to be the villain in the first film, and would have pushed for him to be introduced in the sequel had they remained on the project.

Now, Cargill has elaborated on how the Fear Lord would have factored into the story.

"I mean, specifically, we wanted to have Nightmare be the villain of the first movie. And [Marvel Studios] loved the idea, but they were like, 'That's more of a second movie character.'"

"So, what we really wanted to do is… Me and Scott [Derrickson] like playing around with alternate realities and dream logic and things like that. We're big fans of that kind of psychonaut kind of space, going deep in your own dreams and the like. And so, we wrote some stuff for the first film [that] we wanted to try to incorporate in the second film of just that dream world, and Doctor Strange having to do battle with this guy who is the master of dreams, and the reality is his whims. And so, we were playing around with that kind of stuff."

Derricksom parted ways with the sequel over creative differences, and the movie that would become Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended up utilizing the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) as its big bad.

"And I was not involved in Multiverse of Madness," added Cargill. "I hadn't been brought on yet before Scott decided to part ways. But yeah, Nightmare is such a great character, and I hope they get to play around with him someday. I'd love to go back and write a Nightmare script for them."

Derrickson has indicated that he was not happy with the studio's decision to make the sequel a more Multiverse-focused story and dial back some of the horror elements, so it's entirely possible that we would have seen Nightmare had he remained on board.

We're not sure if Marvel still intends to introduce the character at some point, but a third Doctor Strange movie is rumoured to be in development, and we wouldn't be surprised if the studio wanted to return to a more standalone adventure following the events of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.

When I was watching 'WANDAVISION' I was convinced they were gonna give us Evan Peters as Nightmare. THAT would have been really cool.

Made the right call with the first movie. Could've been in MoM as a manipulator to Wanda. Hopefully 3rd time's a charm.

God damnit, this would have been way more interesting than just another bland multiverse plot. They should have just kept the people who had an idea what to do than making up these scripts on the spot. I remember Carlyle when he was on spill.com he’s a comic book fan

@Matchesz - Theoretically they could use Nightmare as the villain post Secret Wars. Especially if his is sort of a saga villain or a 4 part movie villain in the same vein as Loki in Thor, The Avengers, Thor The Dark World, and The Avengers Age of Ultron. They could use Nightmare as a villain who haunts the dreams of other heroes and then have him battle Strange in Doctor Strange 3.

Dropping Derickson was such a dumb move from Marvel, all to go make the mediocrity that was MoM.

@1stDalek - Was he dropped or did he leave willingly?.

Either way they should have moved the release date back like Derrickson wanted (which I think happened anyway) and I say this as someone who liked MoM overall.

@TheVisionary25 - They parted ways amicably due to creative differences, as far as I know, they just didn't want to make the same movie. Which is fair, no bad blood there.
I do wish they had just let him make the movie he wanted to make with Nightmare. Some of the scenes were Wanda is treated as a horror monster are my favorites.

@1stDalek - yeah , I agree

Even though I do have a bit of an issue with her regression to an extent , Wanda as a slasher movie villain was a great idea.

@TheVisionary25 - My big issue with her is that she's already fully evil when we first meet her in the movie, if she'd regress on screen I think it would hit harder. I do feel like there's still one more story left to finish her redemption.

@1stDalek - interesting

I think I might agree with you if they something akin to Children’s Crusade.

Well , I guess he wasn’t even a second movie villain after all lol…

Kidding aside , I think it was the right decision to not include him for the first one but could have worked for the second one (maybe I’m wrong but wasn’t it already confirmed that Nightmare was the original villain in Derrickson’s sequel with Wanda in a more heroic supporting role?).

Anyway , I do hope we see him in the third one since he can a great baddie imo…

My pick would be either Andrew Scott or Matt Smith!!.

I just want original universe Mordo. That stinger was clearly a set up for a more solo sequel. MOM was mediocre.

Nahhh. They had to screw up Scarlett Witch. She's gone from bad to worse. No way she ends up being a hero again. Not in this universe.

Off topic: there was a lot of disagreement in the article about Superman’s parents and about Krypto. That said, I wanna say that almost every comment was civil and those that were not, weren’t way over the top. It sounded a little like it was back when Iwe’re not, weren’t way over the top. It sounded a little like it was back when I first joined this website as a user back in 2013. Well played, CBM.

I liked MoM (more than most Phase 4 and 5 films which ain’t saying a whole lot..) but I do wish Derrickson got to make his film instead.

[frick]in Disney / Feige and their numerous F ups because they weren't willing to give creators the freedom they needed. How many goated films did we miss out on because of studio interference?

A Dr Strange x Nightmare film would have been exceptional. Could have been a great character piece. Another wasted potential.

@Typhoon20 - A successful cinematic universe requires a singular vision. Like it or not, Feige made the decisions. Too many cooks in the kitchen makes things worse. Always has. We don't know if adding Nightmare would have made the movie better. Maybe the idea on how to add him sucked.

Wait! There was a 2nd Doctor Strange movie? huh...that's news to me. There are far too many great Dr. Strange comics, arcs and villains for MoM to even exist. Thus far all we've seen is a crappy Dormammu cameo and diet-coke Shuma-Gorath. No Nightmare, No actual Dormammu battle, No Shuma-Gorath, No Silver Dagger, No Umar, No Dracula or Urthona and the Baron Mordo plotline was just tossed away for MoM. What a waste of everyone's time! Wake me when he's the Sorcerer Supreme and is the actual focus of his own movies again.

Make a good 3rd movie with Strange and Clea vs Nightmare and we'll have an awesome Doctor Strange trilogy :)

Doctor Strange (2016) is the second-best solo Marvel movie. The ending surprised me, and the story's development is very relatable.
